The bulge is growing? This could be competitor propaganda with other phone makers getting rid of the bulge like the 9A.

Could it be to make more room for something on the front of the phone? Eg, maybe for a smaller dynamic island?

I would get a black colored one so the black on black doesn’t make it as noticeable.

This is reminding me of a decade ago when the leaks showed those ugly antenna lines on the iPhone 6 and I thought there was no way Apple would actually ship that… and then they actually did (and I bought one and used it in a case and ultimately didn’t care).

This is so wildly ugly that I think it’s less likely than the old iPhone 6 antennas, but given past experience, I would give it a greater than zero percent chance of happening.

There’s gotta be something missing here if this is really it. They wouldn’t make it bigger for no reason. It’s like the Dynamic Island before anyone knew about the fill, the leaks had it right in terms of hardware but it just two dots and looked odd. The software fill between made it what it is.

It doesn't make any sense to make the "camera bar" take up the entire top third of the chassis, but still crowd the cameras in the corner.
If course it does. It's to:
  1. Encourage people to upgrade by giving the new model a unique look that will tell other people at a glance you have the latest and greatest(?) model.
  2. Make sure it's not compatible with existing cases, requiring you to buy a new one.
