I have no problem with this. The Pro/Pro Max users were represented well by the increasingly thick and heavy 16 and 17 Pro versions and sales only rose. Apple got the message and they're responding with an even thicker and heavier 18 Pro. They also released the Air, which despite its lackluster sales is doing its job of being a thin, light version that has the vast majority of the software features that come with iOS 26/27. In 2026 that's all I can ask for. Set the Air up for a spring 2027 refresh and I'll check back in at that point.

Horrible from a design standpoint, but it makes sense within Apple’s product segmentation strategy, because it widens the gap between the Pro and the Air, and probably the Ultra as well.


Keeping the Pro models as thin as possible is no longer a priority when customers already have other options like the Air or the standard model.


When you have so many products in the lineup, you need to create enough differentiation between them to justify their existence.


I don’t like it. I’d much rather see the “one iPhone, two sizes” approach, but it is what it is.

Speak for yourself? I’m a pro max user. I absolutely do care about thickness and weight. Judging by the comments in this thread I’m not the only one.

The Air has a mid-sized screen, too small battery and not enough camera lenses. I’m happy for those who like it but it is not a replacement for pro users who don’t want a thicker phone.

Mid sized? You mean the same size as the pro max two years ago?

Good! The increased mass of the iPhone 17 Pro has proven to result in a much more performant and compliant phone, for me, compared to previous models. Really don't care about absolute thinness, but do need a phone that works well all the time, doesn't dim, doesn't overheat, etc.

I've had pro models since they first came out. Used to do client video work with my phone, so having the best phone made sense. But I've never liked the bulk and weight starting with my 14pro, and they keep getting heavier and thicker. Next phone with be either standard 18 or an Air if they upgrade the Air's camera a bit.

Don't think the added thickness will be noticeable easily. Better camera and larger battery are good changes to the new device.

Most pro users who i know don't care.

I suspect that even people who are fine with the current form factor will take notice of the trend to thicker batteries.

Personally I’d be okay with improved battery life coming just from processor and component upgrades, but everyone has their own priorities.

There haven't been any reports of an Air 3 anyway. I'll figure out what to buy in 2028 or later, no big deal.
