i've been on the "preparing" screen for 25 minutes...

To answer those who are asking about updating a (ZiPhone unlocked) 1.1.4 jailbroken/unlocked iPhone, I've tried it and it didn't work.

I'll keep experimenting...

In the meantime, proceed with caution if you have an unlocked iPhone.

and don't ever use ziphone. it's bad for your iphone.

Has anyone found a solution to the could not update Iphone "Iphone" error message? I've wiped my phone clean now and gotten the same error 4 times...even reverted to clean 1.4, but nothing..

EDIT: nevermind..quit and reopen iTunes seems to have worked like a charm!

It says "An Unknown Error Occurred (1403)"

what does that mean?

This is the same message I am getting after I click open on the .ipsw file from iTunes.

Edit: Nevermind. Apparently the download timed out at some point. So I only had 1/3 of it.

going to try again.

Step-by-Step

Somebody needs to step this one:

Don't bother changing your Safari settings.
DL from the link.
Dig the .zip file out of the trash if Safari unzipped it. Ignore the unzipped iPhone1,2_2 folder.
Change the file name by deleting ".zip" extension, leaving only the ".ipsw" extension. Only change this. Put it on the desktop for clarity, so you know where it is and what it is. iTunes will unzip the file itself (it calls it "extracting").
Go into iTunes with iPhone connected (sync first), hold down option key, click "check for update".
Standard file dialog appears. Select the .ipsw file.
Away you go. Next you'll butt-park while iPhone prepares for update, then it's got to this special one-time full back-up if you don't want to have to resync all your stuff like after a restore. That will take a bit. Then it will update. That will take a bit. Then it will copy all your data back, and of course if that's bumping 8GB or 16GB, that will take a bit.
So get coffee, smoke 'em if you got 'em, whatever.

Still no joy here for me.... get the error 5, bricks iPhone. I have been able to restore back to 1.1.4 though... bummer. :(

Update on Activation

OK, good news!

After updating from ZiPhone-broken/activated 1.1.4, iTunes wanted to activate again.

And it did so just fine after I entered my Apple username and password.

Yeehah, works great ... BUT only with an O2 SIM, no other SIM!!!

iPlus unlocked iPhone

To answer those who are asking about updating a (ZiPhone unlocked) 1.1.4 jailbroken/unlocked iPhone, I've tried it and it didn't work.

One of my iPhone is unlocked and jailbroken using iPlus (http://windows-mobiles.com/?p=174 notice the irony of the URL). iPlus has the advantage that it is fully reversible unlike xiPhone. It would probably update to 2.0 fine, but I don't know about the unlock afterwards.

For those people who just updated and can't unlock it, try iPlus and let us know how it goes.

Wot u can not see....

Just don't see the point in upgrading to 3G yet? The coverage is so thin right now. The apps will keep me busy for another year. I want to see a performance upgrade in processing, which should happen next year sometime.

You'll spend that 340 bucks 100 time over but I'll still have my original iphone!!! But enjoy your new iPhone!! You'll find out it's not that big of a deal to have 3G, in it's current footprint.

Well enjoy the original. I will enjoy the better sound quality (it was a step down from T-mobile I found out right away), the 3g service in the NYC area that is at least 50% or more improved over Edge based on various reviewers to this point, some who happen to reside here.

And last, I will enjoy the 8GB of additional space so I can test and enjoy a lot of different apps to go with the extra music I keep on it.

I'll just have to cope with these footprints. :p

What about JAILBROKEN phones?? I guess im in the minority because i only jailbroke the phone and not unlocked it. I know the phone will be activated and such but will it still be jailbroken?? or is their a quick fix for jailbroken?

Unknown Error 2001 - iPhone Dead

It said it was installing the update then burped and said it could not complete.

I then get the image on the phone indicating I should connect to iTunes. (7.7)
I do so and it says is it sees a phone in recovery mode and it needs to be restored. I say yes and confirm the restore then I get the unknown error 2001

Help Please

So it is back to carrier locked right? Which other SIM did you try?

Guess I will stick with my 1.4 T-Mobile USA iPhone for now.

i couldn't get this to work

i tried the link from two sources, gizmodo and macrumors. (which were exactly the same) and I tried to update my iphone 2 times which were both unsuccessful and I had to reboot my iPhone and stuff. With the iPhone 2.0 software update being so imminent, I think i'm just going to wait this one out, we've waited for a year, we can wait a day.

So what happens if i live in italy, i have an iPhone 2G (never activated), brought in the US, i install the update with the italian official carrier SIM inside?

Will i be able to activate my iPhone with the italian carrier?

Wait, I thought apps couldn't do the whole "notification-by-badge-on-icon" yet. Does this maybe mean that the service for this is ready and that AIM and other things will have access to it?

I think I'll just wait for the official release, can't be far off...

hi there

i just found about this, im in another country, we dont have AT&T so if i install the 2.0 firmware over 1.1.4 will my phone be locked?

I live in Belgium, and have a US 2G iPhone, unlocked off course. Will I be able to upgrade and use my next sim? It is jailbroken too but that is not an issue anymore.
