Slowdowns that users are seeing are caused specifically by running an incorrect version of the firmware on unsupported units.

Interesting, however, I have seen none of the problems described in your post. I have used my first gen iPhone extensively all day can not report any slowdowns of any sort, any crashes, any applications (included newly installed applications) misbehaving nor any other issues.

There are many others that have reported the same.

What could be the reason that so many are not experiencing issues while some are? One would think that the debug code would create the problem on all first generation iPhones.

You sound like you know what you're talking about but how do you know for sure? Do you work for Apple or something?

Obviously, if he does, he's not going to tell you. Apple has very strict policies on employees speaking out in public forums. There's no way he's going to admit to being an employee while discussing A) unreleased firmware on B) an Apple rumor site.

Many thanks to SPX for clearing everything up. Looking forward to the final, public release.

Well I'm inclined to believe he is right though seeing as the version my wife's laptop found is roughly 90MB smaller than the file we downloaded this morning.

You know an awful lot...do you work at Apple? or are you Steve Jobs?

Of course he's Steve Jobs... SPX = Steven Paul xJobs... the X is there to throw you off.

...wonder how many people will think I was sincere in that post.... and wondering if I am not half correct anyways :p

Perhaps I should ask him for an iPhone 3g as I can't afford one right now...:D

That seems to be what most people are saying, wonder how my wife's iTunes found it before everyone else. I do like that it is smaller, that makes me feel like it's the non-developer version.

And you are 100% sure that it is 2.0?? Not that I doubt you, I just want real confirmation. Could you take a photo of Settings > General > About on your wife's iPhone??

I'm not stating that he is wrong. My point is that some folks are having problems and many are not. If the problem was something as basic as the present of debug code looking for a place to dump data, then everyone should be seeing the same problem. What people are seeing however, appears to be specific to only some iPhones and there appears to be something individually different that some folks are experiencing that others are not.

Word of this file being available spread like wildfire today and you can be sure that thousands of people have downloaded and installed it. Apple was surely aware of it as soon as this site and the others started reporting it. If the file was so potentially troublesome, one would think that Apple would have immediately pulled the file from their download site at a minimum. After all, if suddenly thousands of first generation iPhone users have problems with the 2.0 update and that gets into the media Apple will take a hit even if in reality the problem is due to folks downloading and installing an improper update file. It will be impossible for those that will report on the roll-out of the iPhone 2.0 software to know which persons used the proper update and which ones didn't. They will only know that folks are having a problem and report that. Apple would not care for that I am sure.

The real 2.0 seems to suddenly be out. My wife just plugged her iPhone into her MacBook Air after she got home from work and it started downloading the update automatically, and it only weighs in at 162.1MB.

Do you think you could upload the update file to rapidshare or something like that so we can all upgrade to the official version?

44 minutes until the 11th even still I am checking every 15 minutes, I really hope its here midnight.

It'll be another 30 min before the download is finished (our internet is God-Awful slow, probably thanks to living on an island), and then it'll take a while to install. I'll be more than glad to post everything in the morning but for now I am hitting the hay. I am sure that in a short while other people will start finding this 162.1MB update as well and they'll post the build number using the cool screen shot feature :)

I can't think of anything BUT 2.0 that this could be, especially seeing as her phone was updated to 1.1.4, etc. However, in the off-chance that I'm wrong I'll apologize... afterall it is my WIFE we're talking about here :p

We're not getting it tonight.

We're not getting it tonight. I'm going to bed.

Of course, I'll hit Check for Update 1000 more times just to make sure, but then, I'm going to bed.

Guys I have a sinking feeling she's downloading 1.1.4. She said she clucked restore, not update. Sorry. I KNEW it was too goidto be true for me to get the first copy of 2.0!
