itunes store access just worked... adding my old info into my phone with 2.0 software now
Yee haw! I also JUST got past the activation and was prompted to restore. The restored failed (says it is incompatible), so now I will setup as a new iPhone.

I JUST got through the activation process! Took FOREVER, and I had to restart my system because iTunes had started giving me the error message immediately after plugging my phone in. I am setting it up as a new phone just to be sure nothing that was potentially messed up by yesterday's update gets carried over to the phone.

I can't tell, unless those 2 .dmg's I specified in the root of the .ipsw are the baseband. If so, then yes it is newer. I still can't access the iPhone itself since updating the new one, it's still at trying to access the itunes store to activate. I even stopped it once, and tried the "Restore" option to download the new .ipsw through itunes itself. The filesize is the same for the 1,1 link posted here in the forums as the one now downloaded through itunes. So they should be the same. But it doesn't matter how you install the new one (Restore or Manually from the downloaded .ipsw) they both hang on the itunes store activation.

Well hopefully someone will be able to post the info. All you gotta do is go to Settings->General->About and scroll down. It is the Modem Firmware.

I have a feeling that it is probably the same version. So I am not sure why the Facebook App killed your battery.

Suggested Wait Time

So I'm still having the same difficulty even restoring back to 1.4 arghh!

Last night I left it trying and looked at the log this AM after it had finally provided SOME feedback as to what was going on (an iPhone cannot be restored message). Here's the last entry in that update log:

2008-07-11 06:32:44.296 iTunes.exe[5704:1330]: <Restore Device 0240F334>: operation 14 progress -1
2008-07-11 06:32:44.296 iTunes.exe[5704:1330]: unable to read message from device
2008-07-11 06:32:44.296 iTunes.exe[5704:1330]: <Restore Device 0240F334>: Restore failed (result = 9)
2008-07-11 06:32:44.296 iTunes.exe[5704:1330]: _AMRestoreModeDeviceFinalize: 0240F334
2008-07-11 06:33:02.453 iTunes.exe[5704:928]: _AMRecoveryModeDeviceFinalize: 0575B123

Looks like it failed at 6:32am after I started at 10:07pm night before. (I changed the device number above in case it opened up my device if made public).

I started again this AM at 7AMish after uninstalling iTunes restarting, reinstalling a newly downloaded copy of iTunes and restarted, and now I am in that recurring cycle where nothing physically happens, iTunes gives me the full progress bar in the "Restoring iPhone software" dialog, and my iPhone has the center apple and little whirly wheel spinning.

How long do I wait before I anticipate it's just another failed one... this is crazy.

It's the same one as yesterday... 04.05.04_G

It took over 50 mins to do the first sync ... just to reload my Contact, Calendar, and Bookmarks (the audio and media is on another PC). Yikes. That was in "overwrite" mode. I'll have to see how long it takes in "sync" mode. If this is an indicator, then my problems with the early 2.0 version are still there. And I'll be looking forward to 2.0.1 soon. :(

Looking at all the wailing and rending of togas going on in the "official" 2.0 thread, we were the smart ones.

Downloaded the leaked 2.0 yesterday, installed no problem, works like a charm.

Yeah, until some proven differences are shown I am in no rush to restore my iPhone. I don't have to worry about updating my wifes phone till Saturday. :D

Quick Update, went smoothly

No problem pulling and running the update here. Dumped my movies and music before that so the whole thing took <5 minutes.

Unfortunately the Apple store in iTunes works, but clicking on my mounted phone gives me a iTunes store -9838 error and asks me to try again later. So, I can't get apps yet, but activation went fine.

Would everyone mind stopping what you're doing so the store can hook me up? ;)

To all intents and purposes, this is a cock-up of epic proportions. In the UK, Apple and O2 are jointly responsible for this. They took so long to decide what they were going to do, their call centre and in-store staff knew either very little or nothing at all. I've been told several things by several stuff members (both in-store and on the phone) that have been completely untrue.

Couple this with the problems Apple and O2 are now having with the activations servers, and this is leading to one massive balls-up of epic proportions. This is what happens when a monopoly is allowed to foster - when it doesn't work, everyone is screwed. But this is as much Apple's fault as anyone else - not least of which is allowing network providers to lock-in the device. How much better would all of our experiences been (the World over) if Apple had decided not to allow SIM locks on iPhones and sold them just like a computer. O2 (and every other mobile network) could sell them if they wanted to, and it would probably have been a radical enough act to contribute to breaking this stupid SIM lock situation we consumers find ourselves in.

To Apple and O2: If this whole process had gone more smoothly, maybe I wouldn't be quite so annoyed. As it stands, I'm almost certainly going to unlock my iPhone (whether that be first or second gen) and use it on whatever network I like. Goddamit! It's my phone!!!

I'm getting exactly this problem. Error -9838. Looks like the activation servers are completely screwed.

Great job, Apple.

I had the leaked firmware and I was able to restore to the new firm by hitting restore. Right now I am having a hard to connecting to iTunes to activate, but I can browse the store.

The Latest on My Saga

So I decided to try another attempt using the latest software released public (a friend sent me the link). Of course my iPhone was stuck on the apple logo with the spinny wheel so I put it into DFU mode and iTunes said it needed to be restored. I shift-clicked the restore button and have been waiting since (about 9am). I thought it was going to stop at same place until a few moments ago when it went to a "Verifying iPhone Software" dialog and the progress bar is shuttling left to right continuously and the iPhone has gone to the please connect the iPhone to iTunes. Not sure that's a good thing.

Oops as I was typing that my iPhone turned off and back on and the USB connection sound indicated a disconnect/reconnect.

One thing I did notice in looking at all the logs. The update is looking at the documents & settings/ all users folder instead of my specific folder. Yet all my iTunes/iPhone update stuff appears to be in my specific folder. Wonder if someone biffed the update paths?

So, I looked at the log file which appeared in the log folder at 11:14am. I started the restore at 9:07. At 11:14 it appears it hung again during the initial stage of operation 14 whatever that is.

I noticed looking at the paths in the log that once again they were the all users instead of my folder.... DFU file = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Temporary Files 1\Firmware/dfu/iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu

I think it may be iTunes?!

I have a problem.

I downloaded the 2.0 upgrade through itunes then plugged in my iphone. It asked me if i wanted to install. I clicked continue and then nothing happened. The download icon disappeared, im still in 1.4, and it says my phone is in the lastest version (1.4)

thanks for help

Grasping at straws after 24 hours

They're using that as a temporary staging location. You're overthinking it.

Hey, I'm grasping at straws after being 24 hours without my phone. I am an early adopter by nature, but was never on stuff like this. Definitely won't be ever again! UNBELIEVABLE!

London Papers are already calling the iPhone Release Day a massive failure.

I think it's time for Apple to get their heads out of their a$$'s!

I'm tired of their "WE'RE NUMBER ONE, BEST IN THE WORLD BLAH BLAH AND BLAH!"

How about we sit down and spend half a day figuring out what the hell is wrong with the way they release these 'major' releases.

MobileMe is not working, itunes doesn't work, my webpage is on and off, my iPod Touch gets errors, then says it's ready for the 2.0 update and yet it's not. The handling of this event is really very disappointing.

Time for Steve to stop praising Apple so much and just talk about the things they CAN deliver on time.

I don't mind waiting an extra month if that means we can get it right. But with Apple (might be the ADHD thing in Steve), an extra month puts them no where near the deadline, in fact new ideas crop up that never makes the final version and yet still pushed everything to the back seat.

OS X was delayed due to the iPhone, iTunes and iPod is taking up TOO much time and takes away too much precious time in development AND the most important thing of all... QUALITY CONTROL!

I've said this one and I'll say it again, I even said it to Phil, but they can't say much without Steve.

Apple Computers
• Hardware / Software
• Pro Apps (Final Cut Pro, Aperture etc)
And

Apple Media
• iTunes
• iPods
• iPhone
• AppleTV
• Software (iMovie, iPhoto, AppleTV etc.)

Same company split into two, dealing with two main things here, devoted to each 100% and not just a little bit!

Two distinct areas dealing with handing and developing for these products.

I'm wondering why Phil never really said anything but smiled. It's not like they are actually doing anything about it. It's a mess!

My iTunes says that 1.1.4 is now the current version, after recently saying that 2.0 was available? I guess they took it down.

/edit sorry wrong thread lol, looking for the ipod touch one..

It took over 50 mins to do the first sync ... just to reload my Contact, Calendar, and Bookmarks.
My first regular sync took over an hour, but I think it died during Bookmarks. I had to sync with just Apps only to get those reinstalled. The good news was the "Backing up" time was very fast (at the start of the sync).

Now doing my next sync after switching Calendar to use MS Exchange. So I'm only sync'ing Contact, Bookmarks, and Apps. Already I see the common issue with "Backing up". It took 10 mins just for that to complete. :(

my activation went through a few hours ago and i finally was able to connect to itunes. i restored back to my last sync (which was about 2am) and now i'm just putting the media back. patience works best.

I loaded the leaked Firmware yesterday and today my Battery is almost dead after being fully charged this morning. It's like I have been playing music on it all day long which I haven't. I don't have the Facebook app either. Are other original iPhone users who installed the leak Firmware noticing shorter battery life? Only apps install are mobile Ebay, Paypal and Weatherbug.
