This big difference is the 1st gen iPhone with 1.1.4 software was rock solid.
Are you kidding me? It was not rock solid, it also had lost of issues that took a few big fixes to work out.

We got used to having a stable phone from our first experience with an Apple phone and expected the 3G or 1st Gen with updated software to run the same or better.
It's been a big let down for many of us.

Why has the push API or lack thereof been totally ignored on these forums? If it's not there in 2.1, that's a big letdown on a promised feature.
i want stability and the third party apps to work seamlessly...
JOBSY is becoming sloppy...!!!
Well, Steve did promise that the bug fixes would improve...
* Battery life.
* Dropped calls.
* OS and app stability.
And also added that there would be "other performance enhancements." I think by "performance enhancements" he means no lag in Contacts or SMS typing, for example. Nothing Steve said yesterday about the 2.1 iPhone update alluded to any new or secret features, so, don't get your hopes up.
I think most people will be happy to have a stable, fast phone that actually works and lasts all day long.
These aren't performance enhancements, these are bug fixes. The push api is something that enhances performance. Let's not sugar coat this.Well, Steve did promise that the bug fixes would improve...

Isn't that the truth, i couldn't agree more. Oh how I loved 1.1.4. Rock solid no crashes, everything just worked on it! Loved it. 2.0 rolls around, granted I really like some of the features but I feel like we are the beta testers and this version isn't the final version for mass use.
Just saw 2.1 available now. Didn't download since I'm running a jailbroken Touch.
Clearly you didn't own the first gen iPhone then
1.1.4 NEVER HAD ISSUES also there were no more bug fixes it was 1.1.4 then 2.0
Where did you see this was available?
Remember that iPod Touch firmware 2.1 ≠ iPhone firmware 2.1.
I am supposed to get excited about bug fixes? You are kidding me?
Yeah, we are the largest beta test group ever... and we're all paying for it too boot.
Is it just me, or are these the kind of comments you'd expect to find on a Windows Vista forum? Sad state of affairs when these things are being said about a product based around OS X.This is the ONE time I didn't care about no new features. I just want a stable OS for my phone! No more restarts, apps crashing, getting my phone replaced, etc.
Friday can't come quick enough!!!!!

Then why have all the previous software updates been released at the same time for both devices?
Question for now is when 2.1 for IPhone will be released Friday. Very early Friday morning or later in the day? I am hoping to grab it before I go to sleep!
I would think they would release it pretty early. I would hope they do it at like 3AM EST time so other countries can start downloading while they are waking up while most people in the US are sleeping. That way there isn't a huge surge of people downloading at the same time from all over the world.
Come one then.. has anyone in Ozzie downloaded it yet? Its Tuesday morning.. are they waking up to a surprise down-under?
Oh good point, they could probably release it in different places at different times depending on where the iTunes account is registered, although that wouldn't be very nice for the US so many hours in the past
