I have a theory - Apple will stabilize the Iphone with a series of updates and then once this is done they will release an update with new features and charge us all for it. Thoughts?

Unlikely, if they haven't charged for updates and new features yet, it's hard to believe they will start now. Esp. when things like the Push API were promised pre 2.0 release.

I did not hear anyone complaining about jumping to AT&T knowing their network was ****. Now that the iPhone is having problems everyone is complaining. Everyone knew going in what to expect with AT&T.

Ah, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'll sleep better tonight knowing there are people like you in the world.

No Push? No GPS? No MMS? We're supposed to be impressed with bug fixes? Half of which probably won't work. 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 were both supposed to have "bug fixes" and they were both as bad, if not worse, than the version before each of them.. grrrr.

We don't know if there is no push or GPS enhancement yet. It wasn't really an iPhone event so it was just a brief you'll get it on Friday thing. I don't think we will ever see MMS. And I don't really care. Since people can just email me photos from their phone to my gmail and I can email them from my iPhone to number@theirproviderMMSemail.com (like @vzwpix.com for verizon), its really not a big deal and MMS is crappy compared to regular email.

Stability & Backup Time Reduction were the best news of the day:D Let's hope it's true, because they said that about the 2.01 & 2.02 updates, which did nothing.

2.1 was seeded

the 2.1 beta was seeded to developers, surely theres something they're hiding, otherwise that would be completley pointless. just my two cents.

Screw new features. I want this stupid thing to get better reception. It's ridiculous at how many dropped calls I get. My wife and everyone at my work with that phone all have the same problem. The way they worded "Fewer Dropped Calls" worries me. It sounds like there will still be a bunch of them just fewer than before.

Not til Friday, what the hell are they waiting for?

Oh and I guess there aren't any "hidden" features or what?

Not sure what you're congratulating him for. Apple has already admitted they had bugs prior to 2.0.2 that caused it to require too much bandwidth. That's an Apple problem, not AT&T.

If 2.1 it fixes bugs that is no bad thing as there are many but why call it 2.1?as there is nothing new.

MMS - It never really worked with my SonyEricsson and all the technology is going towards email so I think MMS is being quietly dropped.

Videophone - yea remember that never worked on my Sony either still early days if any days....

Cut & Paste - What I have heard that this function is great way to hack into the OS of a phone and hence Apple are very relunctant to do this.Which might be similar problem to tethering a phone.

Well can't wait to see what the updates does.:)

I'm sorry but what Sony Ericsson phone did you have that MMS didn't work for???? I had the W810i and MMS worked perfectly. Also, the video worked perfectly fine for the W810i. sure it was choppy at times but it worked fine for the most part. i had at least a dozen video clips saved and i lost track of how many times i used MMS.

Looks like the iPod/Music app took some cues from the Remote app and made song lists better. No longer are they limited to just the song name -- now we get artist and album. Very nice.

Oooh. That's actually a nice little tweak.
Was always bugging me...

battery life, the device actually working, and faster backups, are #1 priority and are the best news i've heard in a long time. but of there isent genius on iPhone, I WILL BE PISSED. but i bet there will be, cause if they diden't apple knew they would have like everyone ever coming at them with pitchforks.

but my #1 main concern at this point, WHERE IS PUSH. i want aim to finally be useful!!!!!!! gaaaa

MacRumors posted this summary of what Steve said about 2.1 update for iPhone...

"Alongside the other announcements, Apple announced that the iPhone 2.1 firmware will be released this Friday as a free update. The much anticipated version upgrade will address many of the issues that have been plaguing iPhone users. Changes include:

- Significantly better battery life
- Fewer call drops
- Bug fixes
- Faster backups to iTunes
- No App crashes"

I just watched the presentation and Steve DID NOT say "No App Crashes".

What he said was "we have fixed a lot of bugs where if you have a lot of apps on the phone, your not going to get some of the crashes we've seen."

I've had the hour-long backups, but that's it. I've had I think one dropped call. Safari has never once crashed on me. Keyboard lag hasn't been a problem (only occurs rarely). It's been a great phone for me.

No crashes! You haven't pushed the envelope. Try logging into some sites that'll crash safari or use some third party apps like Truphone or early versions of new free software that does it too.:)

Still SLOWWWWW BACKUPS iTunes 8.0

Still getting very slow backups, I just abort it. Also getting this error even with iTunes 7. etc...

The application "Application Name" was not installed on the iPhone "My iPhone Name" because an unknown error occurred (0xE800002E)

This happens with many programs, I fixed it once buy deleting the program both from the iPhone and my computer, but it keeps coming back. I will give Apple another chance with 2.1 if not I will delete most programs from my iPhone and see ( ha ha ) if I can get a refund on some of the apps..it's the principle not the cash...it's too much work to keep the apps up to date on the iPhone I like some of the programs a lot, but it's so much work to keep them updated and going through the same junk when it has to be updated. Oh I even tried to De-authorize and Authorize my computer like Apple suggested...no more tired of this, can't even install an update on the iPhone most 99% of the time says there is a problem go to iTunes to get it installed/updated..

What time of day do these typically release? I intend to Erase All Settings (heard this takes two hours) and would like to let it Erase overnight. The when I wake I will install 2.1 fresh!

Right.. He said you aren't going to see them. Meaning, crashes aren't going to occur anymore. This isn't difficult to follow.

Whoa! People who are still running the 1.x firmware, who never upgraded to 2.0, will
actually have to PAY $9.95 for the 2.1 update !

Is this Steve's way of getting back at those that didn't update because they thought it would relock their phone? Why are they charging, and isn't it unfair to charge them? Do you see an impending lawsuit?

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/letsrock/ at 48.01 he starts talking about it.

i agree with you 150%, mms is old technology and email is the way forward!!

We need a way to download attachments though. If someone sends me photos in an email, I should be able to download the pics into my iPhone's photo album. If they send me a word document, I should be able to download it, save it onto my phone's memory, and then add attachments when I send outgoing email.

That charge is for Touch owners only, the iPhone update remains free for everyone.
