Safari seems a lot snappier, and my battery life seems double what it was! Signal strength indicator now accurately showing that I actually have maximum 3G signal wherever I go, even when I'm underground working on the Cern Collider!

It's like a new iPhone! :D

Do you get any lag (meaning, if you swipe the instant the app comes up it won't respond immediately) when you look at contacts through the "Contacts" app? As I just mentioned I get a lag using that app, but not when I go to "Phone" with the contact tab as the default tab.
Nope, no lag there, that's the way I was talking about. :)

Hit contacts, the names come up, and I can scroll immediately.

Help

Is any one in the UK, O2 network, having problems with internet?

My connection keeps dropping. Is it the network or is it the update that has screwed with my phone?

Is there something WRONG with the 2.1 or it's just my iPhone 3G that is screwed ?? After this update my Safari web loading speed is so slow !!

I tried to do a speed test by going to www.testmyiphone.com

But i can't run it after this update !! WHY ??

Day and Night i couldn't sleep because i was so excited about this new update. But now i'm getting this kind of slow speed connection. I have regretted updating...

Same problem here. Just did another restore and no help :(

hidden?

Finished the update... seems to deliver as advertised. I've NEVER got a 3G signal in my house, but now at least I get 2 bars.

Faster, POP mail working MUCH better, etc.

Had to restart, and then re-sync about 3 times before the Genius icon finally came up.

What about the reported "hidden features" in this update? Anyone found any yet? If not... no worries... just thrilled that the nightmare of buying a 3G iphon might finally be over. ;-)

i am giving this update a preliminary thumbs up.

- backup speeds are incredibly fast
- application updating is INSANELY fast
- synchronization is much faster
- contacts responsiveness is flawless compared to 2.0.2
- the overall responsiveness of the UI is clearly better
- the genius feature works

I have some files stored on the iphone via the AirSharing app, and I'm a bit worried that the update process will erase everything. Can anyone confirm that files stored in this manner survive? Will they be erased? I have no WiFi where I am

No problems here. Make sure you let the backup occur before you update though.

So basically this is a real 2.0?

Yep. It's what we were supposed to have the first time.
A few new security features have been added, but no non-security features.
It's not going to make you a sandwich or automatically recognize and take pics
of hot chicks without you having to do anything. It's not going to automatically
download porn when the phone is in sleep mode. You will have to wait for the 2.2 Update to get all of these things.

Wow! Apps install WAY faster. I just installed that Billy Frontier game and after it had downloaded it installed rather quickly. Before my apps would seem to take over 5 minutes or more.

Man me too!!!!!

This is a message board where dorks like us collect together and actually post messages regarding our experience of the download and install of the update of new firmware for our cell phones. People should probably point and laugh at all of us.

With that said, you're asking why I would post a message saying how long my backup is taking? This is exactly where I SHOULD post that. I post it so others will know that's my experience with this so far and therefore if they are experiencing it as well - they are not alone. The whole point of this board is so we can hear about this process of other users. Let people post on the board and stop complaining.

Well, after 30 posts about the same thing (with everyone actually complaining about the update BEFORE they actually updated), I really don't see how important your personal revelation that your iPhone is taking long to backup before the installation is. Sorry.

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

WOW i just did this and i have 5 bars and the number I get is -91. That f*cked up, I believe apple is lying to us!

**UPDATE** Using Network Test i am getting 331 kbps on 5 bars 3G.

First reaction
Downloaded at 9:15, iPhone fully restored from backup and updated at 9:30. Noticeably faster backup speed but in general not exactly the speed I would want. Still seems to move forward, stop for a few seconds (45-60) and keep going.

SMS hasn't lagged for me yet

I don't really approve of the change from an E without a box for EDGE indication, but whatever.

I love that my iPod app now has a much better interface (showing the artists under "songs"). Genius has always been a nice "extra" but not something I'll use ALL the time.

So far, I have had the iPhone on standby for 1 hr 45 m. and used it (for mainly music) for about an hour. Minimal SMS or phone action except for a test call. So the idea of an "extended battery life" won't be confirmed for me until I leave this thing on for a while for the whole day. I'll report back later on this.

What's this wind about two SMS alerts? Where do I find that?

Overall
Seems like its how it should have been out of the box a month ago.

just walked around the block where I know I have crappy signal strength. The update did nothing for it. I dropped two calls.

Just because they say you have 5 bars don't mean nothing. If they just make 3 bars pre 2.1 and now make it 5 bars what has changed? All this has done is make me more pissed at Apple and AT&T. I most likely will sell my 3g and get the new blackberry when it comes out.

I rest my case. ;)

You're very kind to continuously point out the same thing to different people. I was just referencing that everyone is still posting the same questions, not the fact that you were helping out with the answers. :)

enjoy the blackberry. some people just don't have luck with signal. in these cases, you go with the provider who offers you the best signal. but a blackberry with att will be the same as an iphone with att. your solution is to switch to sprint, verizon, t-mobile, etc.

Well I'm very happy so far, I did a DFU and then reinstalled all my apps, everything is working great and the backup is super fast, It's looking very good to me, everything very snappy.

YOu are so right. At&T is a joke. You all would be saying this if iPhone was on another network.

Just want to be able to make a call and not drop it. Is that to much to ask?
