After waiting more than an hour and a half to backup before installing it's taking super long to backup again AFTER it finished installing.

Has anyone had this problem and will the backup times be shorter after repeated syncing?

Nice, just in time for Ike.
The extra battery life will come in handy if/when we lose our power (I live in Houston near downtown and there is a possibility that the eye will pass right over us!).

ok first of all I want to say this update is great and def appreciated. However backing up still takes forever and I cannot understand why apple added a new txt alert before other features that the whole world wants ?????? I haven't heard one complaint about somebody not having enough of an alert for their txt. But hey I have heard people talk about mms, blue tooth, copy and paste...etc.. I just don't understand the logic. But thanks for all the improvements still I hope they work well

Probably because they only had to add a few lines of code or something. Repeating an alert would be much easier than the whole copy/paste thing. At least I think :D

Did it ever occur to any of you that your 3G is slow because every iPhone user in the world is running speedtest and browsing and whatnot to test the new software?

Not to mention the fact that the speed and reception will not improve until ALL iphone users update, which could take weeks.

Just updated and it shows a stronger signal as well. I just compared with my buddy's 2.0 iphone, and I have two more bars. We ran iphone speed test and got nearly the same results. I think the iphone is just adding two bars to the actual signal. If it is truly boosting the signal, I'd expect shorter life on the batter charge.

Slow

I'm noticing that its slow, and unresponsive at times. Here are two pictures of the interface when it froze up just trying to first, get out of Safari back to the main interface. As you can see, the page moved to vertical but the title bar stayed horizontal. Then wanted to go back into Safari and sat for about 40 seconds and you can see Safari is chosen, just not going anywhere. This isn't happening all the time, sometimes the programs are fast, other times they are dead slow.

Did any one notice it no longer displays the contact name when you get a text? It just says "New Text Message". Is there any way to change that? I tried the SMS preview but that is something totally different...

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

Interesting I see -91 but that's kind of because I'm on EDGE. Neato application though.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

downloaded and installed. Back ups are no quicker, apps still won't update properly nor will they install when downloaded from the iPhone app store. However, the genius feature is impressive and I have noticed it all seems that bit faster. Not impressed with the apps but pleased with the speed.

just walked around the block where I know I have crappy signal strength. The update did nothing for it. I dropped two calls.

Just because they say you have 5 bars don't mean nothing. If they just make 3 bars pre 2.1 and now make it 5 bars what has changed? All this has done is make me more pissed at Apple and AT&T. I most likely will sell my 3g and get the new blackberry when it comes out.

Unbelievable...I'm in shock...ever since I got this phone (3G) and seen the cowardly way in-which Apple has handled the reception issues I'm afraid I am starting to lose my long standing faith in Apple...and Wall St seems to agree with me. Sad SAD day; this last pathetic move, which pretty much amounts to Apple DECEIVING its customers by MISLEADING them to believe they have a FULL SIGNAL where in reality -95db—quoted by a user to amount to full bars in 2.1—is a weak signal that yields poor call quality and data speeds.

update

just did the update. This is what I noticed so far:

-Back up is much faster. I have a macbook so it would obviously faster for macs, not sure about PC's.
-no lag in between going to home screen and applications.
-less lag between going through phonebook, keypad, and favorites. It's not lighting fast, but faster than before.

Wait and See:
-we'll see how the battery really is.

WOW i just did this and i have 5 bars and the number I get is -91. That f*cked up, I believe apple is lying to us!

**UPDATE** Using Network Test i am getting 331 kbps on 5 bars 3G.
So.... Apple is lying to you because some random joe on a web forum who has no connection to the Apple iPhone team told you so? That's great logic there buddy.

How is your call quality? That is what is important. I'm afraid that how many bars you have has very little to do with how fast of a speed you will get with data since that depends more on network congestion than signal strength although that can play a factor as well.

Cellular data has more in common with a cable internet provider with a lot of people in an area than DSL. The latter is a dedicated connection to the internet while the former is shared by all people on the same node. The more nodes (towers) you have in in an area will give you a chance to have higher speeds assuming that those towers themselves are not sharing the same hardline to the wireless provider ISP infrastructure.

More of the same

Based on reading quite a few responses here-the update does not seem compelling-I am still at 2.0.1 (jailbroken). Doesn't seem like any reason to upgrade for me...

Well, after 30 posts about the same thing (with everyone actually complaining about the update BEFORE they actually updated), I really don't see how important your personal revelation that your iPhone is taking long to backup before the installation is. Sorry.

It's what the message board is. If you don't like it don't read it. Otherwise, stop critiquing people's posts.

I had trouble with various GPS functions. Often apps like OmniFocus would sometimes hang waiting for the location, never getting even a rough one, unless I restarted the iPhone (off/on).

This seems to have gone away, and the location system seems to be able to get a true GPS fix in places where it couldn't before, such as the basement of my house. Before, it couldn't get a GPS fix even on the main floor. Anyone else seeing significant GPS improvements?

Yep, much faster and better on previous bad locations.

:(

Wow some really useful features here!

What ever happened to apple giving us a big feature every few updates!?

We still don't have:

video
copy n paste
Sending & receiving of bluetooth files
along with many other BASIC functions.

I came home expecting something spectacular no just bug updates great!

I'm very satisfied  I was about ready to ditch my iPhone, it was lagging in every way possible, with no fix. It's finally back to the way it used to be.

I'm getting the name on the txt popup -- sent myself a txt and had a bud send one. I cannot get the repeat reminder to happen though. (Probably because I'm sitting here staring at the phone...)

I might be misunderstanding you though...
