Don't go.......

Why not? Did I miss more people asking about how to turn off the new text message alert? Or more people complaining about back ups? Or how to make the Genius feature work? Or complaining about features that were never announced for the phone like copy/paste?

yeh,
the headphone cable acts as an extra antenna

REALLY!!?? this is very interesting if true. Seems like all i would need is that same amount of boost and i would have a perfect phone lol. I wonder if those clips with antenna boosters would do anything similar?

im tired of people saying mms is outdated. you know what came before mms? text messages, and those are still around so the "outdated" comment is just people trying to say it ok for the iphone not to have it. its a feature every modern phone has, regardless if you use it or not others do and will continue to use it on other phones/networks. so please stop saying it outdated, you just sound like a fanboy sticking up for apple.

I have always had DECENT 3g coverage, one of my issues with the data networks is switching between 3g and edge, when i am in a non 3g area. before itw ould just sit in the NO SERVICE area, until i manually switched to edge, after i did that, all was well.

so we will see.

i dont ever wanna manually switch, or turn airport off and on again!

Wow! I would donate some other guy's left nut for a 20 minute backup!

My pre-update backup started 2 hours and 34 minutes ago and the progress bar is less than half way across. That has been typical. I thing that it's been since around July 18th since I've had a backup takes less than 3 hours. Over 4 hours has been the norm, so I just quit backing up.

Take the apps off your phone and it should backup in like 30 seconds. Ever since I went to 2 pages total my iphone works great. It can't handle 50-100 apps.

Ha ha you should listen to yourself. Last time I looked Apple was a private company who need to make money,

Apple is not a private company, it's public. Which means anyone can own a piece by purchasing stock, and get some of the earnings by gaining dividends.

Hmm, now that you mention it, I am seeing a yellow tinting problem... I think... what do you think? Just me?

This is what we have come to expect from APPLE

Fast download, fast update...and finally a phone that is much faster in many aspects. Bravo Apple! 2.1 is great. This is the sort of service that will help me forget MobileMe and the release of the 3G iphone with the long lines.

...and a way to track music trends.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing as it's all anonymous, but I think those are actually the two main goals.. rather than something users would actually find useful.

Apple is a business, they're going to find (or make) an edge whenever they can... the trick is not making it obvious. ;)

As for 2.1... I personally waited until everyone else upgraded to see results before putting it on my phone.
So to everyone that has upgraded and posted in the forums - Thank you! :)

I got to be honest, I am aweful at creating playlists, my library is 30Gb and my iPhone is 16Gb, I listen to very little of my library - my own fault. The Genius list for me works great. Apple get something out of it sure but in return so we do as we get improved Genius results and who knows what other new features they plan to use with the data. Will it cost? Sure maybe it will but no one is forcing us to continue paying money to Apple :)

Everything seems faster but the Wordpress application still crashes after entering the details for my blog, do I have to restore back to factory settings? Losing all my texts? before it will work?

:(

I also noticed that I can now get the 12 hour time instead of being stuck on 24hours. (uk)

I'm gonna post this every page until the cannon fodder gets it.

For the love of God:

* There is NO "setting" on the SMS alerts. It just happens if you don't view a text message.
* The yellow tint message was a JOKE by the OP.
* Your phone will not have faster backup until AFTER the update. Before and during the update it will continue to be slow because the UPDATE HASN'T BEEN APPLIED YET
* The 3G signal strength adjustment was to the DISPLAY of the signal. you will still have the same signal strength you had before the update - the difference is that the phone will show a higher number of bars for that, even though the signal itself has not changed.
* This update will do NOTHING for your speed. That is a function of the cellular network and not the phone.
* The 3G and Edge ICONS WERE CHANGED. They now do not have the boxes.
* There is NO SHAKE TO SHUFFLE in this update.
* GENIUS DOES WORK after applying the update. You may need to re-synch 2-3 x to get it to display.
* The headphone cable DOES NOT act as a cellular antenna. That was another JOKE.
* Don't bitch about features that WERE NOT ADVERTISED as being part of the 2.1 release. 90% of the people here just want a phone that works as it should first. After that, we can worry about enhancements.
* I know the thread is long, but at least READ BACK 4-5 PAGES or so.

No iPhone Push?

I surprised people aren't talking about the lack of Push for iPhone Apps. Apple promised it would be in this update and was until about a month ago when it was removed from beta. Yes the phone supports push email, but say for instant messaging with Mobile Chat, it logs you out when you close and App. Push would have allowed you to still receive IMs when not logged in. Are we positive its not included as promised?

I just updated now and ran the field test before and after. My phone went from -91 to -99. This is sitting in the exact same spot. I'm very annoyed that my 3G strength actually got worse. The funny thing is that I know have 5 bars, whereas before I was lucky to have 2. It appears this was all a scheme to make you think there was an improvement.

I doubt that your strength got worse. Small fluctuations of up to 10 points in the number are common in my experience. I even held 2 3G iPhones side by side in field test mode once and watched them both fluctuate for several minutes and the 2 phones rarely matched in their signal strength. Sometimes one phone had a better signal and sometimes the other one did.

Maybe today is not my day. But after updating to 2.1 I updated 2 apps and starting sinking the iPhone. It's been 2 hours and still going! I thought they were going to be 'significantly' faster. Bummer! See pic, it's been 'stuck' there for the 2 hours... and counting...
I hope my second backup/synck will be the fast one :(

I can use this function in my Itunes and see the genius icon in my iphone but still can not figure out how to use in the iphone. When I select a song and tap the screen I see the Genius Icon. I select it and get a message that says
"Genius playlists are not enabled. Use Itunes to enable Genius Playlists."

Can anybody lend me some guidance here?

Sure, re-read the message. :) You need to enable Genius playlist in iTunes first, create some Genius playlists and it will sync to the phone. Tho I am not sure if Genius can create lists on the iPhone directly. :)

Noticed a new feature.

If you hold the home button and tap the volume up button once, it activates the video camera.

Then, if you click the volume button down, it cuts and pastes the video into an MMS message and sends it.

Seriously, I heard the audio from my video coming out of the second speaker.

It rocked.

It's truly awesometacular.

I don't believe it has been said, but Location services has changed. Have it off and go into maps and hit the gps button. Says: "Turn on Location Services to allow "Maps" to determine your location". It allows you to click "Settings" or "OK".

In regards to the headphone cable.....it DOES improve call quality for me, i dont know how but it does. I call without headphones and i get hissing, people start to complain about the call quality and i have to hang up (or it drops). with headphones seconds later, the call quality is fine. If i call initially with headphones on, call quality is fine. If I answer the phone with headphones on, call quality is fine. I think this needs further people to evaluate please.

That is crazy. I cant wait to try that. Well, I can wait but I am very excited to try, lol.

Interesting-I have not read the release notes-I do find it interesting that they claimed (when 2.0.2 came out) that it would address the issues of dropped calls and poor reception-and now they say something similar (all this is paraphrased of course by me).

So if what you say is true-it appears a deliberate attempt to make people think they are getting a better signal by manipulating the strength meter?!? Weird!

I think what they did is that the phone thought the signal was poorer than it actually was. They changed it to more accurately interpret, show, and USE the current signal strength.

Seriously...

There are too many idiots on this thread right now.

For the love of God:
* Your phone will not have faster backup until AFTER the update. Before and during the update it will continue to be slow because the UPDATE HASN'T BEEN APPLIED YET

But for the love of crimeny, you'd think that a company that's been as successful at user experience as Apple could figure that out!

Seriously, if they were to perform a "backup," as the status screen says it's doing, how long could it possibly take if they decided, "hey! people are pissed at us for how long it takes to back up, we've fixed that in this release, so to perform this single backup prior to upgrading, let's just copy all files from the device."??? 16GB of data? OK, you've got an iPod touch, 32GB at most. How long could that take to do a complete copy of every file over USB 2.0? 20 minutes?

My iPhone with 12GB of data has now been backing up for about 3 and the progress bar isn't even half way across the screen!

I know that their are promises of this getting better with this release, and I'm very much looking forward to that, but it adds insult to injury that you require the same *absolutely ridiculously long* backup time so that you can get to where the problem is fixed.

Especially considering the fact that I put the stupid thing in flight mode last night, performed this ridiculous backup, and now I am given no way to skip it!

I understand that some people don't get that it isn't faster yet because it's still using the same (idiotic) algorithm to backup until it has been updated, but to call people idiots because they would expect for Apple to have a better way to perform this single backup action prior to the upgrade to avert their being upset about having to wait this long so that they can apply the update that they have been waiting for to fix this very problem is out of line.
