I can't believe people are moaning so much about backups.

You're going to a completely new firmware, why wouldn't you just want to start fresh anyway?

Aside from the annoyance of adding apps (which can be synced) it would probably be quicker to start again.

I'd rather start again, and take 15-20 minutes to reconfigure the iPhone than risk restoring the problems that may well have been backed up by iTunes.

A change I haven't seen reported

The Podcast display is larger now. Only 4 podcasts display on the screen at one time. I liked the other format better. Oh well.

I noticed that there is still no Greek Language support, which may limit the sales in Greece.

Also, anyone else hate the new EDGE logo?

Bleh, no Cut&Paste, not real GPS, no landscape keyboard for texting.

But we now have Genius....

After the "bleh" of Tuesday, we have the "bleh" of the iPhone update. I am glad some get excited easily.

I was under the impression that I could also creat Genius playlists in my Iphone. Just does not seem clear when they state "Genius playlist creation" in the 2.1 Iphone Upgrade.

That is what I thought also. The new iPod looked like you can create a Genius list right from the device and Jobs said it is coming to the iPhone in a few days with 2.1, If you have to use iTunes to create a Genius list and sync to the iPhone how is that any different than a regular playlist? That would not require new firmware.

Let me ask again... why are some people restoring prior to updating, instead of simply applying the update? Isn't the update process flawless, leaving everything intact? Or is there any sort of advantage by reseting to factory defaults?

You can create genius playlists on the phone.

You have enable it in iTunes first, and then sync. The go to playlists. At the top is the genius logo. Tap on it, and it'll prompt you to select a song to create a playlist.

You can create them on the phone, as is stated multiple times in this thread.

<bangs head repeatedly against desk>

Ow.

This is a joke, right? The update's been out for like THREE HOURS.

Not really. Using 3G on my Iphone for 3 hours normally nearly killed it. I think you can make a pretty decent estimate as to whether it is draining your battery or not at a similar level after 1 hour. At least I could. But thanks for the answer. Have a great day.

What do you mean by not real GPS? Because I think GPS does indeed stand for Global Positioning System. Seems that it finds my global position just fine. If you mean, turn-b-turn, well that is an entirely different thing.

you can create a genius playlist from the phone. Start playing a song then tap once to bring up the play bar, then tap the genius icon. It works the same way as my touch with updated firmware.

Some people just want a fresh restart. I didn't bother, but then, I wasn't having a buttload of problems either.

What do you mean "not real GPS"?? Are you talking about iPhone 2G? Cos iPhone 3G most certainly does have real GPS. Or are you confused about what A-GPS is?

it does have it, play a song, tap the song so you see how much of the song has played and you see the new genius icon

you dont need to but hey its a computer and like all computers a rebuild every now and again doesnt hurt, especially when for most 95% of content on device is synchronised

I think he thinks real GPS is turn by turn directions. It's all a matter of using the correct terms.

Also I don't know where he got that turn-by-turn directions was supposed to be included because it was certainly never announced as a feature by apple.

Thank You.

I was under the impression that I could also creat Genius playlists in my Iphone. Just does not seem clear when they state "Genius playlist creation" in the 2.1 Iphone Upgrade. Ofcourse you can do this in the Itunes, just seems a bit confusing to me. I will survive no matter what, I am just happy to have rid myself of a pager, cell, ipod, and Treo. So many complaints here when we really have a device that combines everything into 1. It is AWSOME!!!

You can create a Genius playlist on the iPhone. You have to have it activated in iTunes first, though. When you are listening to a song, tap the album art to show the scrubber bar, you will see the Genius icon in the center below the bar. Tap that and it will create one for you.

* The headphone cable DOES NOT act as a cellular antenna. That was another JOKE.

While it may not actually affect the antenna directly, using the headset should give you a better signal because the phone is sitting still. with relatively little interference from having a body close by holding it and sheilding some signal away from it. My signal is so crappy in the living room of my home that I leave it sitting in the only spot in which I get a signal at all, and when I make or receive a call I just plug in my headphones and use it while it sits there.

I haven't yet updated to 2.1 but I don't actually expect much of a difference.

Also to those of you quoting field test numbers and bars, apple said they fixed the way signal strength is displayed. This may not have just referred to the bars but also to the field test application, where the old field test app may have been misreporting it's numbers either high or low. it's not outside the realm of possibility that -83 on 2.1 is different than -83 on 2.0.2 because on 2.0.2 it may have been reporting it incorrectly.

Ok, what am I missing? I have Genius enabled in iTunes, updated to 2.1 and I can't find the Genius icon. Is it because the songs have not been fully synced since the update? iTunes must embed something in the database that has not been transferred yet. I will have to sync all the music when I get home as my library does not reside on my laptop.
