So much for cutting down backup time. I applied the update and have synced again twice since it...both times backup took for....ev....er.

I don't understand how it isn't just a delta. No need to backup information that hasn't changed since the last backup. I thought that's how Time Machine worked...

So far so good

Everything seems to work as advertised.

Pity they didn't get round to fixing the contact syncing via bluetooth with my car it was a great feature with 1.1.4 but disappeared with v2.

I don't think Audi, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Fiat, Ford, Merecedes etc. are likely to update their systems, like Apple seems to think they should ,to fix this ..... not without everyone paying through the nose.

Come on Apple!!!

I surprised people aren't talking about the lack of Push for iPhone Apps. Apple promised it would be in this update and was until about a month ago when it was removed from beta. Yes the phone supports push email, but say for instant messaging with Mobile Chat, it logs you out when you close and App. Push would have allowed you to still receive IMs when not logged in. Are we positive its not included as promised?

i thought apple promised it in September? i don't recall them saying it was going to be specifically in 2.1 (although it was in the beta) also since this firmware is about stability, probably not a good idea to introduce something new till this firmware has resolved everything.

YAY I can use my apps again without fear of them not loading!!

Also, teh faster contact viewing is an unexpected improvement, I always hated how slow it took to load before.

Seems like they raised the switching threshold from Edge to 3g.
Working very well in a fringe 3g area by not switching as easily.
People who think this update gives you a stronger signal because of the bars are unaware of the technical side of this update.

I have an officially unlocked 3G iPhone on a 3G carrier that doesn't support inter-RAT handovers. I'll be interested to see how it performs in-building, where it used to drop out.

Take the apps off your phone and it should backup in like 30 seconds. Ever since I went to 2 pages total my iphone works great. It can't handle 50-100 apps.

Don't make blanket statements. My phone has close to 60 apps, and I regularly had backups that took less than ten minutes. That was with 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2.

Another thing...

If it's just me, or if someone's mentioned this in the past 30+ pages (like so many other things), try to go easy on me...

When I used to update Apps, the icon for the updated version would move to end of the last screen of icons. No more... it initially appears there, and then moves to its original location.

It was a slight annoyance, and I'm happy to see Apple working on little stuff.

Sure, re-read the message. :) You need to enable Genius playlist in iTunes first, create some Genius playlists and it will sync to the phone. Tho I am not sure if Genius can create lists on the iPhone directly. :)

Thank You.

I was under the impression that I could also creat Genius playlists in my Iphone. Just does not seem clear when they state "Genius playlist creation" in the 2.1 Iphone Upgrade. Ofcourse you can do this in the Itunes, just seems a bit confusing to me. I will survive no matter what, I am just happy to have rid myself of a pager, cell, ipod, and Treo. So many complaints here when we really have a device that combines everything into 1. It is AWSOME!!!

maybe start over fresh?

Also, on a serious note, my iphone backup has never taken more than 10 minutes, since the day I got it.

I had no idea it was taking some of yours hours to backup. That sucks.

Seriously, if they were to perform a "backup," as the status screen says it's doing, how long could it possibly take if they decided, "hey! people are pissed at us for how long it takes to back up, we've fixed that in this release, so to perform this single backup prior to upgrading, let's just copy all files from the device."??? 16GB of data? OK, you've got an iPod touch, 32GB at most. How long could that take to do a complete copy of every file over USB 2.0? 20 minutes?

Backing up does *not* backup your music. It just backs up your settings, texts, voicemails, etc — along with what your music settings are (either everything or specific playlists and the like if your iPhone's capacity is smaller than your library. If it's taking ages, I suggest getting 'one' backup, putting your iPhone into DFU mode and restoring the firmware onto it.

Really? Because that has been true for most electronic devices I've owned over the past 10 years.

Why has this phenomenon suddenly stopped working with the iPhone?

I dont wanna start a war here or anything, but i agree with this. The phone works better for me (in my signal situation) when i use headphones instead of putting it to my ear. Calls dont drop and dont hiss. Now whether the headphone cable doubles as an antenna might be debatable. Maybe putting the phone to my ear builds up static on the phone or something, who knows. Regardless, I just want to mention that I DO get much much better call quality when using headphones instead of putting the phone to my ear.

You can. Play track, tap album art, Genius symbol in middle of HUD that comes up, tap symbol, playlist forms.

My orig. iPhone and new 3G contacts show up in my 2007 Audi A4's system.

2.1, so far, has been great. The lag on my phone is gone, which was my biggest issue. But who knows what else is to come. The EDGE icon is different as well????

does this update support battery life with 1st gen iPhone?

I don't believe it has been said, but Location services has changed. Have it off and go into maps and hit the gps button. Says: "Turn on Location Services to allow "Maps" to determine your location". It allows you to click "Settings" or "OK".

I mentioned this a few pages ago but nobody noticed. It now FORCES you to get out of maps and go to settings to then go back to maps to continue what you were doing. Why did they have to mess with this setting is beyond me!

Contact syncing with Ford's SYNC system works flawlessly.

This is an unwelcome change for sure. Clicking "Ok" used to just turn on Location Services automatically for you. Unless the update allows us to leave location services on without any negative effect on battery life, I don't understand this change.

Apple is not a private company, it's public. Which means anyone can own a piece by purchasing stock, and get some of the earnings by gaining dividends.

your right, its what i meant as the rest of the post explains

Anyone notice if there are still sound issues (ie no sounds when lockin and unlocking the phone even if you have it off of silent, no email notification, no chime for text messages)? This was noticed more often than not in my phone.

Any updates on battery life?
