i haven't taken the time to actually read all of the posts, but the feature for pausing app downloads works in the update. Tap an app as its loading or installing and it will pause the install....also, no more worrying about moving apps around...once it's installed it will take the place of the previous app

Ok, what am I missing? I have Genius enabled in iTunes, updated to 2.1 and I can't find the Genius icon. Is it because the songs have not been fully synced since the update? iTunes must embed something in the database that has not been transferred yet. I will have to sync all the music when I get home as my library does not reside on my laptop.

Hey, works fine for me after update. Maybe you should do a restore

first back up is pretty slow... still going after 4 mins.. nearly done though.

I shall report back with my thoughts when its actually finished

25% into another laborious backup - hoping this is the LAST long backup!

download was quick (about 30 minutes ago)... good luck with the bu's!

No, this seems to still be an issue for me post 2.1 update. I don't know what to think now.

Possible to upgrade from a different machine?

Quick question about upgrading: I normally sync my iPhone with my MBP but I'm at work right now (I use a windows machine at work). I was wondering if I could download iTunes, and update my iPhone from my Windows work machine -- without it erasing all my content and preventing me from syncing like normal when I get home tonight?

Is this possible?

Thanks,
~e

Did you sync after you installed 2.1? I don't know if you have it set to automatically sync, but you need to if you want to be able to make Genius playlists.

After the v2.1 upgrade...

After upgrading to 2.1, I notice the following:

- my iPhone slides into its docking cradle more smoothly.
- The sync cable also doesn't get as warm as before and it seems longer.

This is a fantastic upgrade!

2.1 BRICKED my iPhone

Downloaded it this morning and it in the middle of installation I got the error (6) message, saying that operation could not complete.

I tried everything Apple says to try (another USB port, reboot, reinstall iTunes, etc.) to no avail. I also spent 45 minutes on the phone with support to end up hearing the advice to go to a Genius Bar...

Meanwhile, I have a very expensive brick on my hands and had to return to my trusty 5-year old Nokia (which I hate)...

I was using iTunes 8 on an iMac Core Duo 24".

Among other things I tried:
- Restore on another Mac computer
- Restore on a PC
- Restore on iTunes 7.7 (PC)

All for the same result: phone is dead...

What pisses me off: is it so hard for Apple to program upgrades so that everything is transfered on the iPhone and checked *before* totally wiping out the working firmware and setting???

It is possible, but you will loose your Apps and your music.:D

I think thats the problem, most of the processing and intelligence must happen in iTunes and then part of it is sync'd over with all your music. It looks like below:

OMG I THINK THIS IS B.S.

Now i'm getting full 3G signal, open Safari, and it take years to load any page.

When i was using 2.0.2, it was way way faster.

Now i'm pissed.... WTF IS WRONG WITH APPLE

I had this problem too but it went away with a reboot...

It does probably need to sync with your library again.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this with the new firmware but if you have a long text message convo and you scroll all the way to the top where it says "Call and Contact Info" there is now i new button that says "Load Previous Messages". Nothin big just kinda cool.

Try "Sync" a few more times. You'll get the Genius icon after a few times :)

At first i also don't have it. But after Sync-ing a few times, the Genius icon pop up.

Currently i'm only pissed with this new update is that. Now i'm having very slow internet speed =( last time 2.0.2 i got 1mbps now only 50kbps :mad:

You can. Play track, tap album art, Genius symbol in middle of HUD that comes up, tap symbol, playlist forms.

That's pretty bad ass! :) I can't wait for dev team to update Pwnage, then I'll update to 2.1. The Genius stuff is pretty slick!

Updated to 2.1, after hitting update tab time taken to:

Extract software in iTunes 2 min
Preparation / Updating on iTunes 3 min
Verification 1 min
Updatiing in iPhone 6 min
Restart 30 sec
Back up sync 1 min
Contacts, calendar, bookmark 20 sec
Photo 5 sec

Sunbsequent sync 20 secs!

Post update

Phone is peppy, all the apps and key board is super fast
Keyboard and Contact is where one can really notice the difference, and NO its not a reset effect, since i myself have felt the diff that reset gives
The EDGE / 3G notification font has changed (i personally like the old one)
Desktop shortcut from Safari will accept more text
Had to delete the old shortcut since it didnt take me to the set location of the page!
Click bookmark to give you a history list (was it there earlier, never noticed). More bookmarks have been added
Multiple reminder in sms is kewl and response is much better while typing
Location service ON notification in Gmaps has become longer, my guess just to remind user to retrace the path and switch it OFF once done with :D

Overall bug fix rating 9/10
Feature update 1/10

The genius tool makes me upset because it makes it perfectly clear what are Job's priorities. Genius is nothing more than a commercial for more music to purchase!!!!

We have been clamoring for more than a year now about cut and paste. If apple refuses to listen to it's customers it is going to become just like Microsoft and sooner or later someone will come out with a better product that will them in the dust. AT&T stores are already promoting RIM products over iPhones. If the iPhone is going to become the infinitely more useful tool that is should be it needs basic, basic utilities that other products have. We all know that 2.5G phones were just duped into beta testing the 3G phone. The iPhone is ultimately making us beta testers for a tablet so they need to focus on the function that users want and stop focusing on stupid music visualizers and music commercials on the phone and give us cut and paste.

You don't really know what you're talking about.

For one, Genius and the Genius Sidebar are two different things. They are completely independent of one another: I have Genius turned on, but I hide the Sidebar. Poof! No pesky music recommendations from the iTunes Store! Amazing how simple that was; all you had to do was listen and not jump to conclusions.

Second, I agree that 2.0 - 2.0.2 were pretty buggy, but I doubt Apple would release software in beta and risk their reputation just to test it out for the rumored tabet. They took a bunch of crap in the press and with users for bugginess. We can tell they noticed because the 2.1 update log didn't say the usual "Bug Fixes," rather it was a rather detailed list.

Unless you have some kind of proof that they are beta testing us, I don't buy it.

Is this new on 2.1?

I get a warning-error message when I try to update (and probably download new as well) an app. In this case Bubble Bash.

This application is over 10MB
You must connect to a Wi-Fi
network or use iTunes on your
computer to download this application.
OK (button)

I'm on Edge here at work on my original iPhone 8gig with 2.1 installed.

Wow some really useful features here!

What ever happened to apple giving us a big feature every few updates!?

We still don't have:

video
copy n paste
Sending & receiving of bluetooth files
along with many other BASIC functions.

I came home expecting something spectacular no just bug updates great!

Never, ever going to happen while many users were having problems with basic phone usage, using apps, installing, backups, etc.

Step 1: Make platform stable and usable.
Step 2: Introduce new features.

HAVE TO REINSTALL ALL APPs AFTER THE BACKUP UPDATE!!!

Isnt that the point of BACKING UP? so everything is back to the way it was... HIGH SCORES and all?! Now these apps are pretending there brand F**Kin NEW!!!!
