iPhone 2.1 Firmware Now Available

People have to remember, this thing ain't a phone, it's a computer that makes phone calls

Whenever you install new software on your computer, ESPECIALLY an operating system update, restart your machine.

It works wonders!

It restarts automatically after the installation process, if I'm remembering correctly. Then it says "please wait while your iphone restarts and appears in itunes".....

Has anyone noticed the new 3G logo next to your signal bars? Before today, my phone had 3G in white in a blue box, but not it is 3G in blue text!

Anyone else having text message issues? It looks like its sending the bar goes all the way, albeit very slowly but it doens't send the message. Message stays in typeable region.

I do understand this emergency call feature is different (the sim is activated, and this is a terminal-based solution). Besides, you are right, and to that extend, if the sim card hasn't been unlocked, surely the iPhone won't allow calls on standard numbers (that'd be an unpublicized feature )

To this extend, this is NOT to me, and "Emergency call" function, but an "Urgent call function". The naming is missleading, and there should be a clear indications that charged calls can be emitted through this function.

So, you are right. This is not a security flaw (I will update my first message). But naming is incorrect, I think.

ALL 3rd party apps crashing

dont know if this has been mentioned yet...and can't really search through over 1000 posts!....
but I installed the update and now ALL of my 3rd party apps don't work
the phone is not jailbroken or anything...standard 3G 16GB phone. I'm confused! not nice at all!
any ideas why this might be? should i just try restoring and installing the update again, or is there some other easier solution?

It's frustrating when it was promised now and wasn't even mentioned to be delayed.....if they can't deliver on time that's one thing, but at least be forthcoming about it.

Push notifications were promised for September, not for this update. It could be that there will be another update in a couple of weeks that adds the push notifications (although I doubt it personally...)

This is an emergency call feature so that a person at the scene of an accident can call not only emergency services but possibly other numbers if need be without having to "unlock" the phone with the passcode. In an emergency situation the last thing a person would be thinking of are usage charges.

By the way, I've nearly confirmed there is a serious issue with decreased battery life after this 2.1 upgrade on my iPhone Original 8gig.

Same model phone, not seeing the issue you report so far. Tried a restore? Maybe something didn't go right with the firmware install, or you have a hardware fault.

Contacts lag is gone for me and many others, so your post is inaccurate and people should keep on reading.

4 hours of back up... a quarter of the way through!!! I have stopped it before when it was 3/4ths way through because the bar stopped moving. It backed up for an hour and a half then got stuck 3/4ths the way. Cancelled it, and now here I am!! YAAAY!

Have just updated to 2.1 and when i update i get "I phone cannot be synced an unknown error occurred (1 32 13). Anyone??. or out of the whole world am i the only one to get this.

The one issue I was hoping Apple would address in the 2.1 update was the resoluation of the 0xE800002E error in iTunes with the iPhone / iPod Touch. How unfortunate.

Anyone have any experience with audio interference? Before updating to 2.1, I got quite a bit of static/noise when listening to my iphone in the car through the AUX input. After the update the sound is perfect. I didnt even think about that getting fixed. I wonder if the update also fixed issues with watching over-the-air TV? I cant even use my phone while I watch tv. I get a warning of interference on the tv screen about 10 seconds before a text or call comes through. Anyone notice improvement with this on 2.1?

I think this has to do with better 3G service. You wont get any audio interference if the phone is on the 3G network but if the phone switches to edge the interference will start again. Hope that helps.

I had something like this when I updated my wifes Touch. I turned itunes off and back on and then it worked.

Worth a try!

uninstall and reinstall itunes 8...for some reason I had this happen to me like 10 times with 7.7 and the only way i was able to get it to work was to uninstall and reinstall itunes..good luck!

OMG 46 pages! So, obviously I didn't read all of them, but can someone tell me if the update does any of the important stuff:

1.) Text Messaging
2.) Picture messaging
3.) copy/paste
4.) Flash support
5.) Any other basic stuff that should have been there from day 1

My first post!

I followed this thread all day at "work". I use "" around work because I obviously wasn't being too productive if I was following this thread all darned day.

Got home...double checked the thread and fired away on the update.

Went flawlessly...so far....as did the update to 2.0.1, 2.0.2, iTunes 7.7, iTunes 7.7.1 and iTunes 8 the other day.

I'm jamming to a little music of the past by selecting "Power, Corruption and Lies" by New Order for a little Genius action on my 3g....all I can say is Schweeeeet!

Thanks for all the great information in this thread in this thread and the Forums in general. I've been lurking since I got my phone on July 18th and felt I needed to contribute....a little.

P.S....I would give Steve Jobs a big old man hug.....if I was where he was.....and if I wasn't afraid of breaking the skinny dude.

FWIW it is usually best to perform a complete power cycle of the iPhone after an update. Although the post-update restart should clear everything out the power cycle is just a means of making sure that is the case.

Thanks to @Rybold for the hint about Genius list on the iPhone. It would be nice of Apple to tell people how to access these new features. I fruitlessly spent ages fiddling around with the iPhone trying to locate this function. Thanks for nothing Apple!

The rest of the 2.1 update is good - snappier action, keyboard lag gone, crashing stopped (all except a few badly written apps like Last.FM - talk about Beta code!). But that ain't Apple's fault.
