8Core - great idea!

I wish I had gone that route. I had to delete my Exchange account and reload to gewt it to work correctly. I should have gone clean instead.

grumblings grumblings

Come on people..................

There is always something to complain about but that doesn't mean you have to complain about it.

Plain fact - this is Apple's 2nd phone - EVER. Lets look at the 2nd phone Nokia put out or Motorola or the 2nd RIM device. I say they are doing pretty damn good. It's an amazing product - can it be improved - sure and it will. If you don't like it - don't buy it. If you don't want it - sell it.

Apple never said they were perfect - it's consumers (that's us) said it was better and while Microsoft isn't much of a competitor on the computer side - there is tough competition on the cell phone market. Remember Apple pretty well invented the computer as we know it today - cell phones they are coming into an already very well established market.

Not bad for a rookie I say!

I'm in the North Dallas area and my service is worse than it was when the phone was new. I have a 16GB 3G and the service sucks with 2.1 on the phone. I've tried 3 restores and nothing. Also, I hate the new logos....

HUGE SECURITY FLAW (please read and confirm)

Correction to this message:

This seems to be an ongoing "feature" on all firmware. Some users argue it is not a bug, and that it is normal that charged calls can be emitted.

Hi THIS IS IMPORTANT,

I have downloaded the 2.1...everything fine, security flaw of accessing contacts from the password protection screen has been corrected.

HOWEVER, I CAN DIAL ANY NUMBER FROM THE "EMERGENCY CALL" BUTTON.
Calls to non-emergency numbers work perfectly.

This is less a privacy issue, but an important flaw in case of theft in regard of identity protection (someone can call using your callerID), and billing (someone can steal your phone and use your credit). Although you have to declare the theft and lock the sim card, this seems to me like a major (and basic) security flaw.

I am on Orange France, can anyone please test on another network??

Thanks!!!

Still no cut/copy & paste?

Oh well, maybe they can roll that into OS 2.6 (2010?) when they add a shortcut to turn off 3g without having to dance through 3 submenus to do it.:(

Interference

Anyone have any experience with audio interference? Before updating to 2.1, I got quite a bit of static/noise when listening to my iphone in the car through the AUX input. After the update the sound is perfect. I didnt even think about that getting fixed. I wonder if the update also fixed issues with watching over-the-air TV? I cant even use my phone while I watch tv. I get a warning of interference on the tv screen about 10 seconds before a text or call comes through. Anyone notice improvement with this on 2.1?

still getting this?????
yet its syncing plus i just added a new app:confused::confused:

I updated a few hours ago and have gone on appointments in different types of buildings. I have Mobile Me, Exchange and POP3 emails.

Here is what I found:

1. For an hour or so it was unstable. Email was erratic if working at all. I was testing by sending messages between my services from a computer. I was wondering if this was some kind of joke and I should restore to 2.0.2.

2. After an hour things stabilized and began to work smoothly. That might have been due to all of the 3G activity while everyone was updating this morning.

3. The five bars seems to be a default until you actually try to make a call, receive email or use the internet. Nice mind trick - Apple! Then the actual signal is reflected in the bars going from five bars to two or one or going down to Edge.

4. The 3G drops down to Edge when there is a reception issue, or in my case whenever I walked into a building. That is better than 3G dropping off completely. Good improvement. I still received and sent emails.

5. Contacts and email keyboard all seem to have the same lag time. I have over 2,000 contacts.

6. My email used to stall out during the afternoon which made me power off/on or hold the home button for 10 seconds to clear the buffer. That problem appears to be gone.

My verdict - small improvement. It should have been called 2.0.3.

Better than before.

Sorry to hear you're having an issue. I've seen just the opposite. Zero keyboard and contacts lag (basically same as 1.1.4 on the original iPhone hardware). 3G/EDGE handoff seems to be ok as far as I can tell in limited testing (talking while walking deeper in to the building at work). Better 3G signal sensitivity (I get a usable 3G signal in places I didn't prior to updating - including the room in which I did the actual update this morning right before lunch).

But I agree that it would have been nice if this had been the 2.0.0 release. At least we've got it now.

HOWEVER, I CAN DIAL ANY NUMBER FROM THE "EMERGENCY CALL" BUTTON. Calls to non-emergency numbers work perfectly.

What do you define as a "non-emergency" number? I don't think Apple wants to restrict the Emergency Call to just 9-1-1. What if I want to call the local police or hospital directly? Or a family member in an emergency?

Someone dialing numbers is the least of your problems if you lose your iPhone, so, I don't see that as a big problem.

the new update changed the way location services is used by the map application. Previously, if you had location services turned off (to save battery) and you tried using the map application, it would ask you if it could use it. Tapping ok would automatically turn it on for you and you would continue directly within the map application. The update now asks you to go to settings to turn location services on, so then you have to go back to maps afterwards to continue what you were doing. They basically added an extra step...WHY????

Dang, that is annoying.

Cool your horses there poncho. This has always been like this and is NOT a flaw.

What do you define as a "non-emergency" number?

All numbers that are not short numbers for local authorities or emergency services, whether general (911 in America, 112 in Europe) or local (17, 15, 12 in France ...).

This is the way it works for all mobiles I have had: it only works for these numbers. So indeed, I find this weird: if you wanna call a local hospital, whose call center is NOT equipped to answer your call in a minimum delay, then it is not an emergency call: you unlock your phone and do an "urgent" call.

In a nutshell, I still find this an important security flaw: this should only allow "emergency calls" to emergency numbers. All other urgent calls to non short numbers shouldn't be allowed - think - just as on any other mobile which sim code has not been entered

i updated to 2.1 and now i cant make any calls at all not even with 3g turned off .. went to apple store and they said my unit is now defective and gave me new phone with 2.0.1 ill update to 2.1 when i get home and see if it still does it

Sheesh, people... why do a back up at all?? DL the 2.1 directly to your desktop, click RESTORE while holding down the OPTION/ALT key, chose 2.1 - go from there. You can sync what you need - contacts, mail, music etc... why back up at all? Just go clean install.

Absolutely. If your backup is working and fast, then let it run. If it's borked and taking forever, then kill it and start again. Unless there are text messages or notes you can't live without, of course.

Gah, I updated, Wordpress app still crashed, I restored the phone back to its factory settings and the app still crashes after I try and save my details, anyone else having this problem with wordpress?

I'm going to call foul on this. When I was on vacation in Chicago two weeks ago, I had 1-2 bars of 3G service throughout the city (would have been 5 bars if there were no buildings in the city), and when I was in the surrounding suburbs, I had 3-5 bars. I've read other comments on MacRumors from people that live in Chicago that claim to have 3G. I think you need to take your phone into the Apple Store for a diagnostic test.

Having been in Chicago for a few weeks now, the 3G service here is spotty at best around the city

:D
It just doesn't correspond to the emergency call function on any other mobile, i find it unsafe for all users not being able to block their sim card in reasonnable delays, and whose operators don't insure calls placed after the theft and until the sim deactivation.

Sorry for being surprised, but the "It has always been like this on the Iphone" doesn't seem to be an excuse for me...but that's just me then

my backup takes 2 minutes:Dbut.....
as i said earlier im getting an error even though it seems to be syncing fine, but genius is not working says turn it on in itunes which it is????
