After running 2.1 for the day, everything is great so far. All I wanted from this update was bug fixes and stability, which Apple has delivered. I've experienced no crashes or lags to this point and I actually don't mind plugging in my iPhone to my Mac to sync!

New features hopefully will be added now without comprimising stability.

Installing now and from all the feedback so far, I can't wait to see the difference! :D

Bit concerned though, when I first started the update it came up with an error message saying I had to have iTunes 8 to install iPhone 2.1 but I only have 7.7 and all last week I've been trying to get the IT guys from work (using work laptop) to update it but they haven't  and so I clicked cancel and it continued to update my iphone.

I hope that doesn't mean I won't be able to sync my phone until IT gets off their ass and updates my iTunes... :(

ETA: nevermind, it didn't install... so annoyed now!

I updated to 2.1 this morning at work. Everything seemed fine. I don't know that I got any better 3G service since I have never had a problem at work and I don't have 3G at home so I will reserve judgement until I can try an are that I know has dropped calls. I did try running speed test and both 3G and EDGE speeds were about half what they usually are, but the have been known to vary wildly also so I will wait and see on that also.

I just tried syncing at home for the first time tonight. The initial backup which used to take 10 minutes or more was very fast, as was the syncing of contacts...but then it started REMOVING about 20 of the apps I had downloaded or purchsed from the AppStore. Since this was the first time I had synced since the updated I thought maybe it was going to remove and the re-install them...but NO...after it finished removing them it said syncing was completed...WTF!!! I have synced both at work and at home everyday since getting the iPhone and never had it remove any apps! The only apps that it did not remove were the 4 or 5 that were on the "Applications" tab in my iPhone information on iTunes.

I tried going to the AppStore from the iPhone and re-downloading one of the apps which it let me do telling me that I had already purchased it. After doing this I synced again to see what would happen...it removed the app again! I then went to the AppStore through iTunes and downloaded the same app again. This time it listed the app on the "Applications" tab and did not remove it when I synced again. So I thought "No problem" I will just download them all again through iTunes...only problem is it now wants me to re-purchase about a dozen of the apps that I had already purchased...and its not the 99 cent ones!!!

Has anyone else had this happen?...anyone have any ideas what to do?

Have you changed your iTunes account information? It sounds like either it's seeing the wrong account information (and thus de-authorizing use of the apps), or there is some type of permissions issue going on.

With these iPhone updates, I've gotten in the habit of doing a full restore of my phone starting from factory settings. Just sync over your pics and everything else. I find a little better results doing in this way.

I dont know if anybody noticed this, or this may not be a new feature but for the SMS, if you have a conversation with a specific person that dates back more than 1 WEEK it will ONLY show the current weeks sms conversation. If you want to view the conversations that date back weeks earlier their is a button called "load earlier messages" each time you hit that button it will load the previous weeks conversation.

Deleted Apps

No...its the same iTunes account I have had for years. Some of the apps are ones that I purchased just after getting the 3G the week after launch and some are apps I just downloaded 2 days ago...doesn't seem to be a common thread

What a great update. The device seems much snappier in general. I have noticed a slight slow down when typing in some apps and in safari. Before the update, the device would vary in signal strength from 2 bars up to 5 even in the same position. This update has smoothed that out. Kudos to Apple. This is the way this device is supposed to be. But with that said, great updates like this help to ease the sting of the high monthly cost of the device.

Keep up the good work.

I have a lot better reception at my house now!! I haven't used it much around town but if it's like this everywhere else I'll be very, very happy.

What about landscape mode for texting like they had on the old iphones? Has anyone heard about plans to bring this back?
There was never landscape mode for texting. Only safari.

Running 2.1 for 12 hours solid, 1 crash with Safari, Ashphalt4 continues to crash but not as much. So far very happy.. BTW I'm in Japan so 3G is my only option so will be keen to check the battery life in the wild!

why did they change the signs of the 3G and the EDGE?

and how come my genius icon does not show up when i play a song?

What I have noticed:

  • Way Faster in General
  • No more texting Lag (my main annoyance of previous firmware)
  • Maps Locate ME actually works consistantly now
  • Contacts scrolls smoothly
  • Safari is Snappier
  • Reception and Talk quality is much improved

Great update and makes the 3G iPhone perform as it should!

What I've noticed:

Cons:

- Battery life cut in half by mysterious background activity (now I suddenly have 10 hours of "usage" listed, despite having been asleep for 10 hours)

- Zen Pinball stopped working

- Butt ugly 3G/EDGE icons

- Enabling Location Services from an app went from easy to awkward

Pros:

+ App icons stay in place after updates

maybe you need to restore your phone as no one else is having your same issues. Or perhaps you are being a little dramatic. Really? butt ugly icons? they're just tiny little icons displaying the simplest information. There is no way anyone in their right mind could consider them butt ugly.

I am mighty impressed by the excellent job Apple has done with 2.1. It has fixed the two major issues I've had with the iPhone.
  1. Lag loading contacts
  2. Painfully slow response typing in Japanese

The second issue, in particular, was a huge setback for me as I write a lot of e-mail in Japanese. Firmware 2.1 has completely fixed it. The difference is really night and day.

No one else is seeing worse battery life than in 2.0.2? Riiiight.

As for Zen Pinball, it's the same on all iPhones and iPod Touch with 2.1 installed, restored or not - it just doesn't work.

Maybe Apple needs to learn how to create systems that don't require Restore or Archive/Reinstall everytime there's a minor problem.

Then there are a whole lot of people in the 3G/EDGE Icon poll thread who are out of their minds.

I did the update and everything seemed fine... just now I plugged it in... it went for about 20 minutes... then I got this message:

Any thoughts? Of course, I never unplugged it and I have tried twice so far with the same result

I had the iPhone has been disconnected message, too. I ran the update again and have no issues.
