I wonder if some of you guys just have defective batteries in your phone. My 3G has continually been able to hit usages of 4-5 hours with nearly 3 days of standby. It's looking to be even better with this update. Are you guys just using your phones that much more?

nope, 4-5 hours of usage is what i normally do, but I only get 1 day of standby before it dies

As an iPhone (1st Gen) owner I deserve a free update. Part of my monthly bill goes to the development and enhancement of the iPhone. This makes me proud owner I don't care if my iPhone has no modern look or 3G but still future proof when it come to functionality. I found no reason why would Apple will charge touch owners for an update this time just for the PLAYLIST. Note: I still love the feel of my iPhone than the 3G just my opinion.

No charge for iPod Touch owners for just the Genius option. The upgrade from 1.14 was the last time we were charged. I upgraded for free this time around.

some folks say that battery life has improved...love to see more verdicts.

I actually see a real quantifiable improvement, unlike most of the people who downloaded the update and instantly said they just know that their battery is already working better.

I take my iPhone off of the charger when I get home around 4:00 PM and put it back on at 9:00 PM. In that time I do about an hour or two of web browsing and about half an hour of talk time. By the time I put the phone back on the charger it had about a 1/4 left of the battery. I took my iPhone out yesterday at 1:00 PM until 10:00 PM and I still had more then 3/4 left of my battery with web browsing and showing off the iPhone's features. I have no idea how a software update could address the battery running out as quickly as it was but it seems to have for me.

Restore

Has anyone tried wiping their phone and doing a restore from backup after upgrading to 2.1 ? I want to know if it restores the SMS messages also.

I'm wondering if the reason backups are so fast now is if they just stopped backing up certain things (in this case SMS messages)

Thanks,

i dont know about battery life yet, but service coverage is remarkably better. At the office at work, 1 floor underground I would be lucky to get 1 bar of coverage on the edge network. now i get 2-3 bars on 3g.

No one else is seeing worse battery life than in 2.0.2? Riiiight.

I'm having exactly the same battery problems as you. I'm showing 100% usage times which are exactly the same amount of time as it shows for stand-by. I left it go all day yesterday without being charged and by 3pm I was getting the 20% battery warning and I hadn't used the phone at all.

Today the same thing was happening. I poked around settings and I had WiFi, 3G and BT turned off but Location Services was on. I turned LS off and the usage times stopped. Now there is an actual difference between standby and usage. Apparently it's must be running the GPS full time with it turned on.

After reading all the threads, I skipped on updating to 2.02 until 2.1 came out. I did download it but never installed it.

Now iTunes wants me to update to 2.02 before I can seemingly get to 2.1.
?

Yes, iTunes will say that but when you actually update it only installs 2.1. I wondered the same thing.

I updated and I still get some problems with overall lag, keyboard lag (occasion), contact lag, and some apps don't update. Anyone having similar problems?

I was thinking about doing a complete restore and not restoring a backup. Anyone attempted it and succeeded or think it would work?

The day that Apple allows landscape-mode with SMS would be the most glorious day ever.

i'm still having terrible lag issues when typing, i.e. it stalls on the letter typed being blown up for a few seconds, then the next letter, then the next letter. it's taking me a long time just to type simple text messges. i thought this was supposed to be fixed. anyone else still having this problem?!

i can't seem to find how genius works on the iphone. do you have to have a minimum number of songs on for it to work. i don't have an extensive library on my iphone, but when i'm playing one of them, i'm not seeing the genius icon i thought you were supposed to to turn on the playlist creating. i'm double tapping the album artwork while it's playing and only getting an option to repeat or shuffle. what needs to be done?

you need to have genius turned on on the computer you sync with

Problem solved, MMS not needed. MMS was good before email made it to the phones.

More to the point, every carrier I know of that has MMS also has an "MMS gateway" that allows you to view the MMS from a normal web browser, or send images to MMS users.

For instance, you can send an MMS from the iPhone to a Fido user like this:

phonenumber@fido.ca

It is annoying that you have to know the carrier e-mail address, but it's certainly not unusable.

I have, so am confused why this isn't working...

Do you sync or manually manage your music?
Did you install iTunes 8?
Did you update your phone to v.2.1?
And you're 100% sure that you turned genius on and had it do all of its fancy pants work, like sending all your iTunes library info to apple?

The Wimpy City

I'm going to call foul on this. When I was on vacation in Chicago two weeks ago, I had 1-2 bars of 3G service throughout the city (would have been 5 bars if there were no buildings in the city), and when I was in the surrounding suburbs, I had 3-5 bars. I've read other comments on MacRumors from people that live in Chicago that claim to have 3G. I think you need to take your phone into the Apple Store for a diagnostic test.

Actually, he's not far off. Chicago's 3G is touch-and-go. 5 bars can be right next to 0-1 bars. (Usually inside buildings, but not only) I'm tired of turning 3G off, and wifi on, everytime I go into my apartment. When the phone does hang on to 3G inside, callers complain that I sound distant and echo-y. They constantly complain that I have them on speakerphone, when I don't.

iPhone 3G should be called "iPhone: 3G Sometimes."

:apple: :(

Actually, all AT&T needs to do is send a regular SMS message with something like:

MMS Message Received
Click http://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to view.

That way you can view it in Safari without having to remember the website and weird password.

Believe it or not, that is EXACTLY how MMS works on ALL phones. The only data that's transferred via the message system is an URL. The actual image is left on the carrier's server. That's why you can also pick it up with a normal web browser, if you know the proper URL.

One way, when you're using the iPod, hit the playlists button and you'll see Genius or when you play a song you tap on the album cover (not in coverflow mode). Not the small one you see on the top right but the big album cover and you'll see the genius icon in the middle.

Other than that, I like 2.1. Wallpaper picking still lags a bit.

Apps not working

Since I downloaded the update, none of my applications that i downloaded work. Is anyone else having that problem?

My battery usage seems about the same as it was before. I get about 5-7 hours of usage, and about 24 hours of standby. I still have to charge the phone at the end of each day, but, seems about normal based on other phones I owned. I think the WiFi uses a lot of power because when browsing sites for about 1 hour on WiFi, I notice the battery power drops about 25%.

Haven't charged since friday and still on about 80%

Do you actually use the phone, or does it mostly sit in standby for days?

i got 6 hours usage today before it hit 10% left, well impressed!!
though the best thing about the update is how quick apps install on the phone and the fact that whilst the app is loading you can fire up another app or use the phone any other way without it slowing down, before if an app was installing i could do nothing else or the phone would crawl to a halt!!!!!!

Every thing advertised for the "Fix" works as advertised with the exception of the battery.
Much more stable
Little to no lag when typing
Much better 3G reception. Tested both with Iphone Tech Mode and Testmyiphone.com

My battery life is as bad as it was but the phone (for me) is FINALLY AS STABLE AS 1.1.4.

I have location services turned off, BlueTooth turned off and have used the phone very little over the weekend and my battery is still 1/2 drained by the end of Friday and Saturday after charging overnight.

When playing a song, tap the screen, on the bar that comes up is the genius icon (in the middle), tab this and your playlist will be created

I had to activate it in iTunes first and then sync my phone before I was able to get it to work on my phone.

I like Pandora application much better. I chose "Lean on Me" and Genius put YMCA by the Village People in the playlist. I had to hit edit 3 times before it got rid of it.

When you hit edit you should be able to remove a song from the playlist or even better, give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down like Pandora.

It's a free app and no I didn't write it but it's one of my favorite on the App Store. Apple did a lousy job ripping it off.
