ok so according to the release notes that came with my 2.2 for my 2g ipod touch, everything else in the update is the same as the iPhone EXCEPT for all maps updates.

the Maps application is exactly the same on ipod touch's as it was in 2.1

no walking directions
no public transit
no street view

i tried it out on my ipod and its true.

that is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. I have no idea why they would do that

I imagine it's because the Maps update includes new features, which due to their accounting practices, would require they charge for the update. They're giving the stability and security fixes, but not the new features.

They did a similar thing with previous IPT updates, but they versioned it as a .1 of the previous version (i.e. 2.1.1 rather than 2.2).

took 20 minutes to download.... and 30 minutes into the update i'm only a quarter of the way thru backing up the iphone. WTF, it does not take that long to read 16GB of data.

Why can't Apple speed up the backup process??

Because on any other network or computer, they'd just appear as unicode squares.

Well Google Mail can process emoji fine on my PC, why couldn't they add this support to my iPhone GMail account. I can also send emoji fine from my GMail account when using the PC. Simply it has not been implemented well.

yeah. its not cool. i thought apple was really trying to go somewhere with the ipod touch... theyre gonna end up charging again for new features on the ipod touch... ridiculous. just... sad

Scary thought: How come they can't "STOP in call setup failures and dropped calls" instead of just DECREASING them?...

Simple, because this is more of an AT&T issue so Apple can only do so much.

I'm still waiting on the backup to finish but looking forward to trying out the new Streetview and podcast downloading. The rest is just icing on the cake.

OK, it's no big deal, but it's a shame the iPhone doesn't display emoticons within text messages, like other mobile phones. Why not give the rest of the world what Japan now has?:cool::p;):D:eek::(:):mad::eek:

snif...snif.....

Waaaaaaa...aaaa.

snif...snif....

Would you like a kleenex?

w00t, update finished, and installed. Yay!

I have already noticed, before even unlocking, that the device hasn't gotten a degree warmer... previous updates have made it blisteringly hot!!

So is it safe to say now that Fetch actually works, i can now see my battery drain more overnight?

They can't change the laws of physics, and (sadly) they can't change the reality of software development. Those two combined mean there'll always be areas with enough interference/poor enough signal to interrupt calls, and there'll always be software bugs to mess things up further. Hopefully this update is a significant improvement in this respect though :)

Of course there is a reason :) - a week later they'll release iPod Firmware 2.2 Ultimate Edition and will charge 20 dollars for it.

Don't give them any ideas...

As far as the update goes for an iPod:

- Much smoother system
- Safari is ugly, but smoother as well
- Downloads seem to be faster
- Love the new views in App Store
- iTunes is nice too
- Mail seems to run alot nicer as well
- Lack of Google Maps Update is a killer though... I was excited for the update only for that and this ruined my night.

Kay, not true. I have a beer, so I'll be fine. :D

I just noticed something cool. When you're in Safari and you tap on the address bar to bring up the keyboard, it keeps both the address bar and the google box visible, though the address bar will be larger in width and the google box will shrink in width. What's cool is that you can then tap in the google box and they'll flip (google box becomes wider and address box shrinks) all with the keyboard pulled up. I know for sure this works in landscape mode. I'll test it out in portrait and update.

Update: this does NOT work in portrait mode. In portrait once the keyboard is called up you can only see the input box for the box you tapped (either the address bar or the google search box). To switch to the other in portrait you must close the keyboard and then tap the other box.
