I want an ipod touch as a PDA and I know iphone has a monthly service fee but i'm not getting an ipod touch knowing iphone has all the same feature plus more and is cheaper than ipod touch.

iPod touch is a one time fee. iPhone is a phone therefore it has bills for every month of it's 2 year contract. Listen, guys, there may be a $199 price tag on the new 3G iPhone but the only reason it is has that price tag is because AT&T and Apple want you to buy it and get you reeled in to it's hook.. hook line and sinker.

how is the iphone cheaper? What maths are you doing?

Right now. To sum it all up. No matter what you do. Its going to be 500 dollers for an 8GB Iphone. And 300 for an 8GB Ipod touch.

You may want to rethink that.Take canada for exzample

3 Year contract
$60 per month total $2160

Wondering if we'll see a price drop soon. I mean I know it's been rumored but after the WWDC announcements, somethings gotta give you'd think.

See, here's where people are getting confused. The iPhone is selling for $199 ONLY with AT&T's 2-year contract and force-activation. Pretty much, it's a subsidy and the iPhone costs the same without the subsidy: $100 more than the iPod touch to capacity.

Wow, nothing like overlooking the entire thread.

Anyway, given the history of updates to the iPods touch, nano, and shuffle (as shown in the Buyer's Guide) I think we'll see nano and touch capacity increases at the current price points in September. Never mind the effective price advantage that iPod touch has over the iPhone, it will be a matter of keeping in the ballpark range with the pricing of the personal media player market, and making the whole lineup more appealing for holiday shopping.

here is the only problem for this.
iPod touch users already have cell phones, so they are still paying more.
its like having a phone bill, then adding another $500 on that (32 gb)

Apple doesn't care how much your non-iPhone phone bill is. They are in the business of selling their products AND making money. Apple wants you to ditch your current phone and buy an iPhone instead, hence the (subsidized by AT&T) price drop. If you're not willing to switch, they want you to buy a touch, but they're not going to lose money on it just so you'll buy one, especially since they are making WAY more than $199/$299 per iPhone. If you still don't get it, I suggest you read this and this.

The only way, IMO, to compare Iphone 3G and Touch prices is to calculate how much it would cost to own the Iphone 3G outright without following through with the 2 year subscription. From what I have read in various places, the only way to do this would be to buy the Iphone, pay the first month phone contract charges, then cancel within 30 days. This would cost $199 (8GB cost), + $70.00* (1st month) + $175.00** (Cancellation Fee), which gives a total of approximately $444.00 for an 8GB Iphone, versus $299 for an 8GB Touch.

*Approximate Charges
** Not sure how accurate $175 amount is.

I believe that iPod sales are going to go waaaaaaaaaaaay down. The iPhone is going to be the hottest selling Apple product ever. This December, just watch, all of the AT&T stores are going to be sold out, and won't be getting anymore until 2009.

Remember one thing, not everyone wants to be tied to a 2yr $70 a month contract with att. A lot of people dont need to pay for the data plan so they dont want the iphone. That was why I bought my touch in the first place. To think that every potention touch buyer will flock to the iphone is false. The wolrd knows the iphone is not cheaper than the touch in the long run, only a few people on this forum dont. Also every person with common sense knows that cell phones are subsidized when you sign up for a contract. If the touch is too expensive for you there are a lot of other mp3/video players out there. Please stop this nonsense about the iphone being cheaper.

True. Why is this so hard to understand, for some.

I really don't agree at all.I really think the touch sales will be massive not down. Now there are some reason for this.

1)Alot of people don't want to be in contracts. In the states i think its a 2 year contract with not bad prices. In canada its a 3 year contract with no unlimited plan.I know alot of people that were going to get a iphone are now going to get a touch.

2)With the new software update it will make the touch very attractive. With the likes of mobile me etc.

i am an ipod touch user (8gb) and i am with tmobile i have a sidekick 3 in a family plan plus i pay $20 a month extra for unlimited text, instant messager, internet so all together my bill is $120 w/o tax a month so really the touch is cheaper because iphone plan is wayyyyy toooo expensive for my family

With the release of the ATT plan i think we can now put the myth of the iphone being cheaper to bed.
The ipod touch 8gb=300
The iphone 3g 8gb=600

The ipod touch 16gb =400
The iphone 3g 16gb = 700

I am glad this argument is finally over.
I forgot to add. The above is for a contract free iphone.

i understand what you are saying, i really do. and it all makes sense, but this does also: when you buy an iphone you pay monthly for the service, NOT monthly for the phone itself. you pay a one time purchase price for the phone, and that is less than the ipod touch, and the touch is now more.

also, apple realized this because the touch did cost less than the iphone

The Touch is not a one-time fee. $20 for iphone apps. Another $10 for the ability to buy more apps and a scientific calc I won't use. 99 cents additional for every song you have on it, or at least that's what they are worth.

No, an iPod Touch is not a one-time fee.

Yes it is. When you buy it. Its a one time pay. Its YOUR choice to put thous things one there. Its not nessasery. No one said you have to. I can buy an Ipod touch an let it sit in my room for the 25 year. It wont cost me a cent.:apple:

beginning to think there are just a bunch of morons on here aside the other people saying this

YOU PAY A MONTHLY CONTRACT FOR THE PHONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its why touch owners pay 9.99 for upgrades, once you spend your 399 for the touch THATS IT ASIDE MAJOR SOFTWARE UPDATES.

quit crying the iphone is that price BECAUSE WE PAY A CONTRACT PER MONTH. quit crying because your ipod touch isn't 200 dollars because the phone is. ITS A DIFFERENT DEVICE, ITS NOT AN IPOD ITS A PHONE. if you want to cough up the money for an iphone don't complain about the touches price because you'll pay considerably less the first YEAR having your touch than you would being out a heafty amount of cash instead.

cry cry cry

if it was the other way around iphone users would be going "well why is the touch so inexpensive I could get a prepaid phone and have a touch this is BS" see what I mean?

then if that was the case iphone havers would say "well why is the touch so inexpensive compared to the iphone? I have to pay a monthly contract this is bull" see where we are going?
