i agree with Juliashe and appreciate her post. it's not often that we have honest and open discussions to help balance our skewed perspectives. too often, we who live in the Western world follow along with a world-view that is ethnocentrically self-righteous and blinded to any other perspective.

before we make judgments and point the finger at the Chinese government, we really do need to take a good long look in the mirror, and realize that we're all in this together.

it's a small, connected world out there.

Really cannot stop, :D, when the elites here talk about our chinese misery, have they ever thought who set the miserable low salary level? CCP government? I think the government is a despicable accomplices, they promise to protect the poor from the rich, wat a joke. But the international company is a big joke, will us chinese reject an offer of a full pay as high as usa worker, european worker? And even if we "beg" for a bit lower than the pay, will the international company give us the job?

Then when all the chinese loose job while our government not so mercy as yours that could afford our welfare, will you donate to china poor ppl? or they deserve what they earn, let them eat rice and vege, dont drink milk and save the milk for the rest of the world, like usa... a win win situation?

just like the little girl that was lip syncing in the beijing games, they're family is probably all dead now.

famous much?

This girl is now in a bunch of news articles telling everyone about this event... they claim she still has the job (which i agree, they would have no reason to fire her, like if i was a boss i would find it hilarious its not like the customer was mad at all? meaning clearly she did a great job testing his phone, kuz anything she did find wrong with it got fixed) She has now become famous! n aside from a few loser comments, her salary isn't bad for china, n i was working at 14 (she is much older i'd guess but even if she was only 16, how is it child labor? broad is smiling!!) Anyhow, i think you should get commission from MacRumors kuz they are gettin lots of webhits these past few days, every news paper is refrencing these pictures n tellin us where to find 'em.... Great Find! That's awesome.

China's "human flesh search engine" is in hot pursuit of an unnamed Chinese factory worker after photographs of her showed up unexpectedly on a new iPhone 3G purchased recently in Britain.

In one of the photos, a young woman dressed in a pink striped factory uniform and wearing a matching white cap and rubber gloves, is seen smiling and flashing a "V" sign as she leans over an iPhone assembly line.

The photos were discovered by an iPhone user in Britain who promptly posted his find on the MacRumors forum, setting off a global chain reaction of media interest and culminating in the quest by Chinese internet users to discover her identity.

The term "human flesh search engine" refers to this type of mob reaction by China's so-called netizens (internet citizens) to pool their collective resources in order to track someone down.

In China, Apple uses the giant Taiwanese company FoxConn to assemble its iPods and iPhones. The company's main factories are based in the Bao'an district of Shenzhen, the booming city next door to Hong Kong.

FoxConn representatives have confirmed to several Chinese newspapers that the woman - dubbed the "iPhone girl" - is an employee of the company.

The spokesman said workers had most probably been testing the phone's camera and had forgotten to delete the photos. He said those involved would not be fired for the mistake.

"Small mistakes are unavoidable," the news agency AFP quoted FoxConn spokesman Liu Kun as saying. "I would call this a beautiful mistake."

He said the factory worker in the photos was "quite nervous" after her face appeared on websites and in newspapers.

FoxConn, which employs over 270,000 people in its Shenzhen factories, has said it will not be revealing the woman's identity.

But Chinese journalists and bloggers have already narrowed the search down to the quality control section on the fifth floor of one of the FoxConn factory buildings - where up to 1000 employees reportedly work.

Of the six photos in the set found on the iPhone, two are of the "iPhone girl" and four are of the factory in which the phones are assembled.

The images have since been plastered all over the Chinese internet and as of the time of writing, there were over 20 million searches for the term "iPhone girl" recorded on Google's Chinese search site, google.cn.

In addition, the domain names iphonegirl.net and iphonegirl.cn have been snapped up by web users trying to cash in on the sudden surge of interest.

In 2006, Apple conducted an investigation into the work practises of FoxConn after reports emerged of sub-standard working conditions.

Apple found there were some instances of overcrowding in worker dormitories and some evidence of over-working and harsh treatment - all oversights FoxConn agreed to rectify.

She is OK

I do live in the same city that made iPhone.
According to our native news, she is missing, even her sister can not find her.
But her boss said she will not be fired.
Maybe she missing is not about this thing, but because income,
the factory made iPhone, paid $200 (U.S. dollars) per month,
and over 8 hours work.
They don't have good work conditions, so, it really impressed me that she can still be happy when she was in a hell.(Low income, high expense, to bring up a family with sick parents and young brothers.)
Here are some photos of the factory made iPhone

It is completely a mess.
The worker there worried about safe problem, because there are lots of robbery.
To buy a iPhone 4G (Yes, not 3G iPhone, it is too expensive), it will cost her half year salary.
Maybe iPhone make us happy, but for the people who work 7(Days) X 12(Hours),

It is a catastrophe.

Though they live better now, but still not be great.

Even bader than the prison in U.S.

See Chinese Link:

Her sister approved that she have been fired.
Foxconn told that she will not be fired.
Who should I belive in?

Some one told that not only her but also her manager and a few of her leagues were already fired.

Who tells lie.

Your pictures make she lost her job!A poor girl whom is from poor family, she is now in bad condition -even her sister cannot find her.

hahah

Saw this in the paper this morning - glad mine wasnt fiddled with before i got it :p

Im so agree with u!

"Hey this is Steve calling from Cupertino. You know that girl from your factory that's been posted all over MacRumors, Digg, and Gizmodo? I know from all the stereotypes about Chinese manufacturing that you're all probably itching to sweep through your thousands of employees, find her for the seemingly horrible thing she has done, and make sure she never works for you again. Please don't do that."

I mean seriously? No one really cares.

well, im a Chinese girl who is not so interested in iphone but interested in this topic you guys were discuss about :)
some ppl even get emotional about how bad China "is". (umm i would like to use "was") but really to those who think how worse our government are, have you ever live in China? If you never live in here, grow up here i guess then you will never know the real situation in China now.

As a Chinese, if im still in China, never go abroad never be able to see commets about China a foreign Country i would never know HOW MUCH I love and care about China. There are so many things about China which is not even truth. But still i cant why ppl are so believe in it??

hey mate think about what is develping coutry(China) and developed coutry(US)?
In US probably there is no such a poor place like that, but in China we have even worse situation than that.

Schenzen is a highly developed city, just over the border from Honk Kong. It is in one of Chinas Special Economic Zones. If you go there you will see it is ultra modern with a bustling CBD, luxury hotels and multi national factories every where. The border outside stops the mainland Chinese from freely coming in as this part of China is extremely sought after to work and live.

Don't believe the stereotypes about China, it will soon over take the US as the No 1 economic power in the world. The pictures of the Foxconn factory showed its a modern well equipped assembly line.

China is catching up with the rest of the world very fast.

I'm sure she is fine just a lot of baloney is being posted about this thread now and is now being turned into typical anti apple propoganda.

She is world famous and apple should employ her as the face of the iphone.

Wow, she makes 1800 RMB/Month?? That's approx 9,000 Thai Baht, or at least 2,000 Thai Baht more than a factory worker in Thailand gets paid. It may not sound a lot to you Westerners, but when a prepared meal for one costs 10THB, or food enough for a family dinner costs 30THB, it's plenty! She can afford to feed her family 300x a month!

And for those suggesting she is a kid, OMG you know nothing. She's at least 19, probably 21-22.

God almighty, about 5 pages of newbies posting how much they like Asian chicks, "she's fired", "she's not fired", photos of what's clearly a street claiming it's a factory, etc. etc. Mods, can we lock this thread now please before it gets any worse?

It is all part of Marketing

Shark Tales has learned exclusively that the woman in the photo is a prototype of iMinion, Apple’s next-generation automated assistant and a cornerstone of its enterprise supply chain strategy.

Oh please. China's economy is a trainwreck waiting to happen. The environmental devastation, corruption, lack of oversight, income disparities, unmanaged and unmanageable growth rate, and political hamfistedness of the government ensure it.

After some rough times in the years to come, China will settle in with the rest of the middle-income countries and then face a long, long struggle to reach the wealth of the developing countries. The current generations are already a lost cause, still polluted by echoes of the Mao era.

She is world famous and apple should employ her as the face of the iphone.
Here I am more inclined to agree. Could be a nice fairy tale if she's ready for the experience.
