Optus has/had some small business data plans that were amongst the best offerings in Australia (particularly if you couldn't get 3, and Virgin's 300MB for $10 was not enough.)

NON-CONTRACT RATES
Pay / Get
$29.99 1GB
$44.99 2GB
$59.99 6GB
Excess Usage 15c/MB

CONTRACT RATES
Monthly Spend / Data per month / Excess Usage
$5 5MB 31c MB
$15 30MB 31c MB
$19.99 1GB 15c MB
$34.99 2GB 15c MB
$49.99 6GB 15c MB

I hope to see that the final iPhone data plans are a better than this, however I wouldn't be surprised if they were similar to above :(

A good comparison of "pre-iPhone" data plans, including graphs/tables can be found here. Pretty much will be rendered useless when new plans are announced, but it's a good indicator of where Australia's data costs are at.

EDIT - actually this page on Optus won't load ATM. Hopefully they are changing things for the better! :)

What do you mean by the pomme ones? I will be waiting in the line on July 11, although Optus said that the iPhone will be available from start of business day (9AM).

did Optus say that the iPhone is available to everyone at 9am? or are you "registered?"

because if you "pre-register" by paying $100 dollars, they state you can pick up the iPhone 2 hours earlier.

They stated it - iPhone is available to everyone at 9 am. 2 hours earlier is very early, but that's what they want to do. I am trying to find the story which says that.

wow a 7am start if you pre-register. nearest optus shop is around 2hrs away (canberra)
it's going to be an early start on the 11th :)

it's not like vodafone is really an option if you are non-metro NSW!

I also went into Three in my local Westfield and the guy there said he'd heard that Three were 80% confident they'd be getting it too. He said to look out for an announcement on the 30th June.

Don't know if this can be trusted but that's what he told me.

good work on that info. 3 is good because it is the backdoor to telstras coverage when out of big cities

Iphone on other carriers

Does anyone know if once i have the iphone, whether i'll be able to use another carrier e.g. telstra (as i already have a telstra 3G phone)??
The tech specs at apple.com/au mention a SIM tray [EDIT: and now i look closer a "SIM ejector Tool"!! meaning it probably is self accesable!!YAY!], but does that mean it is user changeable and/or does the phone support it or LOCK YOU OUT, like was the problem in the US when it was 1st released! I dont particularly want to use a hack if it can be avoided.

sorry if you already answered this q earlier.

And this may sound like a stupid question, but so iphones have a silent "vibrate" setting?

you wont be able to use it with telstra. it will be either locked to optus or vodafone.

sorry im not sure about the virate function as i have never used an iphone but im sure it does have one.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

thanks for not making that question a new thread, i think if you buy an iPhone on the most expensive plan it will come unlocked. you should also be able to pay a whole lot more and get it unlocked outright ($630=16gb???) and it has a simple switch above the volume control on the left hand side, just flick it and it goes to silent! ahhhhh, so simple

i recommend checking out www.iphoneunlockaustralia.com and www.iphoneinaustralia.com both have good info such as
We have received information from an Optus World employee [via e-mail] that the iPhone will be sold by Optus outright (without any contract) for $350. The tipster has not told us whether this is the 8GB or 16GB model, however, we believe it would not be a surprise if the 8GB sold for this price (looking at the current price differences between the iPod Touch in the US and over here).

In one month, we'll just know if this is all true. Thank you to the tipster.

sounds good eh?? $450 for a 16gb? nice

sounds good, but also sounds a little too good to be true?

from what we have heard, at&t are subsidising the iphone, on a contract, $200.
the purchase price is $199 (8gb) on a 2 year contract.

i can't see how the price could be less than the $200 + $199 = $399

i think the AU outright prices will be more like -
$429 - 8gb
$529 - 16gb

I certainly hope its as cheap as possible though! :)

I think optus has stopped taking $100 deposits to get the iphone now. I was planning to do it this morning and i think i have missed out now.

Who else put a $100 deposit down for an iphone?

i wanted to wait to see some details about plans before putting any money down, even though it was refundable, i was thinking it would be safer to wait...

noticed this morning that the box for the $100 pre-order was gone from the site too!

doubt it. i would say that pre pay iphone will only have very limited data and cost alot. It would only be on a plan where you would get large data amounts.

I'm sorry but what planet are you guys living on?!! The iPod Touch currently retails (in Australia) for $399 (8GB) and $499 (16GB). There is absolutely no way at all that an unlocked/bought-outright iPhone is going to cost less than an iPod Touch - I don't care what the Keynote said. It will be cheaper on a contract (well, cheaper initially, as you will be paying for it on a monthly basis) but unless they price it at least $100 - $200 greater than the iPod Touch, why would anybody buy a Touch anymore?
