Just got the text and I updated to 2.0.2 as soon as it came out. Now that this somewhat makes it official that 3G should be better after update, I am going in for a replacement as my 3G is still crap.

I think it is hardware issue and not a software issue. Man I am getting pissed and have reverted to using only Edge for Voice Calls. However, my 3g seems to work quite well for internet and data. I wish there was a way to use edge for voice and 3g for data and not have to switch it off.

this is very good idea, at least it can be a temporary solution.

I just received a free text message from AT&T and Apple saying that the software update that was released last Monday was suppose to help the 3G connection. Well, with my experience since upgrading to 2.0.2 my connection has basically dropped to 2 bars or less while on 3G in a 3G-enabled city (Dallas, TX) where I am suppose to have excellent connection. Since Monday I have had about 5 or 6 dropped calls, and it takes me about 30 minutes to receive text messages (I tested this out by having one of my friends send me a text message).

I am an Apple supporter. They have amazing computers and iPods and I have recommended them to my friends when they asked me if they should get a PC or a Mac. I only wish the iPhone 3G could be just as reliable.

Currently I have switched my 3G connection to off so I am on EDGE, and I have 5 bars where ever I am.

The message from AT&T and Apple said: "A free message from Apple and AT&T: An important software update for iPhone 3G has been available on iTunes since this past Monday. To get it, simply synch your iPhone 3G with iTunes and click the "Check For Update" button.

Has anyone had a better connection with 3G since downloading this update?

Thanks.

alright, another Dallas person!!!

so i'm not crazy.........my 3G coverage went to CRAAAAP too! and Dallas is supposed to be COVERED in 3G.

There's also an alert on the iPhone section of their site

What the SMS should have said

Please rush home form work today and download the latest version of 2.0.2. Get yourself really excited that we have bug fixes for the contacts/keyboard lag, iPod sound loss, and App crashes. Oh wait. Instead we will not fix the above issues but instead make your 3g connection worse. Actually you might drop all the way to GPRS at your own house were you have always had great 3G coverage.

Given the neutral to negative feedback of this update, why choose THIS one to text message about? How about they let update adoption be organic until consumer feedback rates hit 60% of 100 or better BEFORE you inform grandma to update.

In this case they essentially did the opposite of that. Lots of somewhat negative feedback and THEN they popularize it. Hmmm.

Rocketman

Nicely said.

Worse 3G connection here in London thanks to 2.0.2.

Come over to the relaxed side of town (Fort Worth) - I've asked about a dozen iPhone 3G users and none of them have a single bad thing to say :)

Go MSLSD! Stick it to 'em! Or, you could just plug your phone into the computer like a normal human being and be notified then.

other changes than 3G in 2.0.2?

There must be some other changes behind the scenes in the 2.0.2 update than just the 3G connection issue. Otherwise Apple would not make such a big fuzz about it. Maybe extra protection against jailbraking/unlocking?

I disabled Apple's kill switch for 3rd party apps on my phone. I love Apple but no way do I want them to have any control over my phone whatsoever.
Nice to know that if a truly malicious app ever does get released, there'll still be at least one person to infect and spread it to others.

That seems very interesting, and also, a turn on Apple's strategy. Usually, they like to interfere as LITTLE as possible and be behind the scenes, just like their software. It's also interesting that the call for the text messages actaully resulted in them. Very interesting.
A text message, though, is most likeley a VERY efficient way of communicating quite unobtrusively with customers. Many people (heaven forbid) do not use email, and wouldnt like an automated computer calling them. And yet, everyone HAS to have a phone number, so you might as well text them.
Apple seems to be more vocal about current issues than in the past.

Just imagine if everyone hit iTunes at once to update. It'd make launch day look like a walk in the park

I really like the idea though... but.. this means AT&T knows what firmware we are using, because I didnt get this text... Meaning they already know im at 2.0.2!

It's probably because when they sent you the text your iPhone was showing "No Signal", or one of those full bars but no data kind of things. :D

mine got worse... =( i want 2.01 back...

anybody else still have the SMS lag? Mine is lagging like crazy still!

Thats probably why they are staggering them. I haven't received the message yet.

I'm using Netshare right now, no problems on 2.0.2. I just got a replacement iPhone on Wednesday night for application crashing issues, loaded with 2.0, and noticed that 3g in my girlfriend's apartment flickered several times between edge and 3g. I didn't run any speed tests with my latest iPhone on 2.0 but I just did and am getting better speeds then I did with my previous 3g on 2.0.1. Now I'm getting 1031kbps down and 353kbps up on Speakeasy through the Chicago option running to KC (about 525 miles).

The only times I've noticed dropped calls is sometimes when I leave KC or Springfield, MO and the 3g hands off to Edge outside of town it can drop. Not all the time, but about half the time I'd guess. Then of course the crappy coverage on MO-13 driving home to KC through the Ozarks. But that's not the iPhone's problem. It's always been like that.

Hopefully my 3g doesn't suck when I go back down to college next week.
