Again, somebody please post a link to official information that states that: the 199 and 299 prices are not actual retail prices but AT&T subsidy prices.

Again, please post a link to the official announcement of this information.

Sorry if this has been covered in this thread.

But does anyone know if the 3g has a faster arm processor to run apps zippier? I am contemplating upgrading and was wondering if it will run faster since I am psychologically trained to get a faster apple product every time I upgrade.:)

What Aboout Us That Already Have An Att Account?

Ok, what about us who already have an ATT plan with 3G but do not necessarily live in one of the countries that the new iphone is going to be sold at. Example; Puerto Rico. If, i go to Miami, and go to an ATT store, and since i already have an ATT account, will i just be able to purchase the phone and change the chip. BEFORE ANY COMMENTS, REMEMBER - even though ATT does not carry the iphone here in Puerto Rico, we do have ATT stores here in Puerto Rico which also include data plans. So, what i'm saying, OH you get it. Any ideas???

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Overall I have a hood reaction to this article. I think that the termination policy doesn't really make sense if you have to return the phone. I guess this insures that someone doesn't go about buying the phone and then terminating the policy, unlocking it, and selling it but it seems weird that you pay $200 for the phone then $200 for the termination fee and then a $200 refund when you bring the phone back. I guess they're waving your $200 in your face and saying you have to bring it back if you don't want to loose $400.

apple ought to allow people to buy the phone for full price and self "activation"

this is only going to lead to problems.

Also, what is with the minor tweaks only? Was expecting alot more changes!!! this is kinda a letdown. just 3g and a couple minor tweaks?

i'd love to see the screen slide and a real keyboard. hate screen only.
Ha ha. Then get a Tilt or go to Verizon, the king of sliders.

foreshadowing

Didn't you know something was amuck when the demo phone they were using on the monitor during the opening minutes of the presentations at WWDC looked EXACTLY like the old phone lololol?!!!!

In keeping, everything pretty much went downhill from those opening moments haha!

A little sumthin for the Canadians

For those interested:

I just got off the phone with Rogers, who allowed me to pre-order my iPhone. It wasn't *technically* a pre-order...more accurately, they're making a list of customers who have called in and calling them when the iPhone is available, making them first-in-line. (I don't mind sharing this info, cuz, hey, I'm already in line :p)

Second off, they rep I spoke to told me he had no info on pricing for the iPhone, other than an internal e-mail he received today stating that whatever the pricing will be, it will indeed INCLUDE data. When I asked if that was "ULIMITED Data", his response was "Mose likely."

So there you go :) Food for thought, or not.

For me, the upgrade is not worth it for just 3G since there is no 3G where I am. Add 32 gb and I will want one. Add both and I'm there. In the meantime, I'll stick with my 16 gb version one iPhone.

BTW, you may lose an iPhone but you never loose an iPhone. See this too consistently and repetitively in posts to just be a typo. Just bugs me that people don't know the difference. Never mind...

i was going / hoping to get a new phone. because of the small update "3G and gps". pay more monthly fee. that plan is gone.

fcuuking apple. sly baster... phone is cheap but the plan is more. introducing those freaking game. so kid would be like "daddy get me an iPhone". later the daddy would get one too coz it's a fucoking iPhone. Corp. BS.

Typical AT&T and Apple bu!!$h!t.

Looks like I will be sticking with Sprint until they officially go out of business as SO MANY people keep telling me and I keep reading but hasn't happened yet.

I'd rather stick with Windows Mobile and an HTC Touch (with far better keyboard) and pay $15 a month for unlimited 3G data than get stuck paying AT&T for their typical, not as far reaching, halfed @$$ 3G coverage.

Sigh. "Since they (AT&T) paid apple for the old one as well. Only with that phone, they paid it with "installments.". This time around they'll just pay back themselves when the revenue begins to come. They're paying back themselves, because they laid down an outlay to begin with, or "invested" in the customer, if you wish.

Not true, in a technical sense. If you take the time and READ the FEC agreement with Apple you will find that AT&T was not paying Apple for the PHONE but the users and service it BROUGHT to AT&T. The initial iPhone was NOT subsidized in the sense the new iPhone is. AT&T paid for TRAFFIC brought in by Apple and not for the phone itself - almost like commission (well - just like commission w/o the hard-sell and constant phone calls).

This also puts the iPhone at the same social level of the other 100 phones out there.
People from Europe used to fly to the US to buy iPhones (and the RAZR before that) and resell/use them in Europe. It will still be cheaper for europeans (or some of them) to buy an iPhone in the US but now it will be impossible like for the rest of the phones. ATT had done this before, this is not a Apple choice anyways. The only difference between the iPhone and other phones before it is that the iPhone is only a "breakable software" with 1 screen, while the others phones could not be cracked by the majority of the people.
I see this new contract thing as a way to prevent piracy with the worlds most pirated machine of the past 12 months.
My 2 cents.

I read somewhere prepaid is not going to be on the G3's anyone hear different?

I spent a lot of yesterday on the phone with AT&T and Apple and that is true. To Go Phone or Pick Your Plan. 3G Pre-Pay is not allowed on the 3G network Independent of brand.

What about?

What about those that have the first gen iPhone since june 29 last year and have a 2 year contract? What happens to them?

Family Plan Math is Wrong

The original iPhone was the Family Plan Secret weapon. Get the $59 plan and then just $20 for a second phone complete with data and messages. Under the new terms it looks like about $800 extra over 2 years for your family plan. You can double-check my calculations at ishouldbethepresident.com.

Anyway, that doesn't even take into account the lack of messaging. For now it looks like the smart move is to try to do what ever you can to see if you can convince the ATT store people the give you the $15 MediaNet. This plan was designed for their "dumb" phones but after some haggling I was able to get a similar plan in January to get a subsidized BlackJackII even though they wanted me to get a $30 smartphone plan.

Alternatively you may just be able to buy the phone with the dataplan and then drop it online and then add the cheap MediaNet plan online. Then just wait and see if they charge you an extra $200. And remember most AT&T employees know less about their phones and plan than you do if you spend 20 minute looking at their website and reading their brochures.

Incorrect. Even with the family plan on the old 2G model, you still needed to pay the addtional $20 PER PHONE for data. I know, I currently have a family plan with three iPhones. I pay $60 covering phones 1 & 2, $10 for phone three, for a total of $70 for the family voice plan, but I still pay three individual data plans on top. Only thing that is changing about those data plans is price - each one will increase by $10 for the new 3G iPhone.

Software updates down the road

It has been said, that ATT doesn't have to share the revenue with Apple anymore. Right now this money flow from iPhone users through ATT to Apple paid for software updates. iPod Touch users have to pay for those extra. If Apple now updates the software for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch at Macworld 2009 will all of those users have to pay?

The money from AT&T doesn't literally pay for the software upgrades, but it does turn the device into a subscription sale which changes the way :apple: reports revenue. So they'll probably have to charge a nominal fee when they add new services in the future, that's true.

Does anyone understand the Business Data Plan

I'm a bit confused by the the distinction in the ATT postings about "Consumer" and "Business" data plans.

Does this mean that corporations that buy iPhones for their employees to use pay the $45/month data rate as compared to the $30 for individuals who go to an ATT or Apple store to buy one?

OR (and worse) do I, as a consumer, have to pay the $45 data rate on my personal plan if I wish to use Exchange Active Sync to bring my work email down to the phone?

Steve is happily touting the Business Friendly aspects of the 3G phone, but it's not clear to me if you have to pay up the extra $15/month to ATT to enable these features.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

Wait, so I sold my old iPhone and was planning to upgrade. I still own the plan that came with it. I am going to have to cancel that plan for 200 bucks and get a new plan??????? I can't do that!?

No, you'll be able to slide over to the new plan without the cancellation fee. As long as you are still paying the existing iPhone package.

BTW, I wonder what's happened to iPhone resale value ... at first I thought that it would plummet, but considering that the EDGE phone is $10 cheaper per month and you'll still be able to unlock it, maybe the value won't fall that much. Some of you who don't like the new AT&T plan handcuffs might want to buy a used first generation phone ... you can download iPhone 2.0 for free, after all.

Having to active in store will be a pain for everyone, and the fact you can't gift the item for someone not currently on AT&T (but is switching..) is messed up. I was hoping it would be like the last iPhone, you buy it and signup for AT&T in the iTS, but I guess not.

Blame it on all the dishonest people who unlocked the iPhone from AT&T.

I can see it now...

Going to the ATT or Apple Store and the poor idiot who's helping you drops the iphone while trying to help you activate it before you've even been able to touch it... AAAAAAA!
