I don't know/remember hearing how things were at Apple stores last year, but when I purchased mine from ATT at launch last year, it took a solid 30 minutes to CHECKOUT. Something to do with ATT's entire system being online. They were actually going through a web browser! The idea that it was good last year (as far as I know) is crap. I would expect that ATT has learned at least a little bit and have upgraded their servers. I wouldn't expect it to take any longer than last year (at launch) even with activation, but then ATT has let me down before...

well I got mine at an ATT store as well but it wasn’t busy or packed because not a lot of people where buying them in my area which is odd because I live in Windermere.....but my whole process only took 20 mins and sales dude offered to activate it for me. He then even went as far to introduce me to the iphone ringtone maker so I could make my own tones.....say what yall want about those ATT Reps but I always seem to find the nice ones.

I don't know about you all, but I will (demand) ask the Rep to bring me out my iPhone so i can unwrap it before installation.

Good luck with that. The :apple: Cell Phone Activation Geniuses :apple: will have strict orders to make sure the iPhone is activated before handing it over to you i'm sure. At 20 minutes per phone activation, that will be one long and brutal line on July 11th. I'd wait a few days before going into the store to see how this all shakes out with the in store activation process.

SIMs swappable?

Has anyone heard if the 3G phone requires a different SIM than the original?

For those of us migrating from Original to 3G does one do a SIM swap to migrate the original phone number to the new phone or will it be different?

I'm planning on giving my Original iPhone to my daughter but would need to migrate her number from Sprint onto my old iPhone. Obviously, I want to migrate my current iPhone number to the 3G handset.

Thoughts on how this will work?

Tethering...data caps?

Now that the iPhone supports 3G there will be a huge demand to tether it to a regular laptop or desktop for unlimited broadband internet.

Once someone figures out how to do that, will we see restrictive "caps" placed on the iPhone?

5GB/month is the standard cap for "unlimited" cellular data plans that cost on average average $60/month (not includinf the cost of the voice plan)

Since iPhone 3G owners are only paying half that price, maybe a 2GB/month or even 1GB/month cap on data?

Steve's whereabouts

Allow me to demonstrate just how caniving and low down 'n dirty this company and its officials are...

All Mr. Jobs would have had to do Monday during his unenthusiastic keynote was simply take a quick minute after each point to explain, the reasons WHY certain decisions were made, WHY certain clearly desirable features were excluded, etc etc etc.

But what did he do instead?? He nearly dropped a dump in his pants over the "excitement" of announcing the groundbreaking feature that was----ready?---yep, A MOTHERFREAKIN SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR when you rotate the phone to landscape mode!!!

Unfreakinbelievable. Simply unfreakinbelievable.

Oh yeah, every pimp and prostitute and crackwhore who is now able to buy an iPhone is REALLY gonna find this feature useful!

And lmmfao @ those childish game apps that were demo'ed!! Could you believe that?!!!!! Did I really witness that or was it my imagination?? And @ $9.99 a pop!!!!! Freakin' hilarious!

Additional AT&T charges to consider

I just spoke with an AT&T rep who told me I'd have to pay an additional $10 for the unlimited data plan (old news) but also mentioned that the unlimited GPS routing plan is another $9.99 and the 200 SMS text messages I get for free with the iPhone 2.5G plan will be an additional $4.99 on the iPhone 3G plan. The total is almost $25, or $600 over the term of the contract!

$9.99 for GPS...wow...that sucks. I guess I don't really need that.

Exactly. So I hope the NON hardcore Apple fans have a ball, as some have stated this device was made for. As a hardcore Apple man who understood the value of the original iphone from the time it was announced until now, I have to stick with my version 1. Many of the hardcore Apple supporters will, because it isn't just as simple as owning a new gadget. There is more to it than that. :apple:

Ok that's true...but it's spoken like a 1st gen owner. 3g makes a huge difference. There is no question about that. Literally two times as fast....

I have to agree with you.
Underwhelming is an understatement.
These are the new kiddy/teen toys.
To be seen in every mall in America soon.

Like everything else Apple lately..it's about stupid unnecessary features aimed at the I want it now, low quality entertainment set rather than real users looking for substance over style.

Then to make the iPhone even more of a joke you have to use ATT and you have to pay for G3 even if you can't use it. Jobs and co at their most arrogant selves.

The plastic back looks like crap too.

Meanwhile we still have laptops that look the same as they did years ago and pro monitor and computer designs that are even longer in the tooth. And then we have the Mini...oh sorry, what Mini?

Apple has become an entertainment company geared towards the younger generation and using the lame old marketing ploys of selling to needy fashion conscious kids. The largest section of the buying population in the world. $9.99 per lame game....cha ching!

RIP Apple Computer :(

Sadly that doesn't mean a whole lot if you can't get 3G signal where you are.

The only question I have is if the iPhone is going to be accounted for differently. I mean currently Apple gets money from my sub so when iPhone updates are released I don't have to pay. Apple won't be getting that from the iPhone 3G folks, so are the free updates going to go away as well?

carelessness

oh yeah this is EXACTLY what's gonna happen: some overdone half-trained chick brought in from a hiring agency to help with the hundreds of people in line -- yeah you heard right, HUNDREDS!-- and who's wearing about 14 cheap jagged cubic zirconia diamond rings on her hands, and who's still got glitter all over them from that glittery body lotion (or whatever the hell that stuff is LOL) these young chicks use these days, and who has little to no regard for other people's property ---- yeah that's the EXACT chick who's gonna take your shiny, fragile, easily scratched (cuz it's plastic, remember? Lolol) brand spankin' new iPhone 3G out the beautifully packaged box and...bang it and scratch it all up before finally handing it to you to walk out the door!!!!

Lmfaooo July 11 is gonna be comedy on an epic scale!!

why bother?

I live in a semi-rural area 30 minutes south of the Moscone Center and for this week all things Apple. I do not have cell coverage in the home but would like it. I waited till the new iPhone came out to see if it had WiFi calling built in but alas it does not. I have a WiFi set up at home and would like to use it.

Walked into a COSTCO and found a T-Mobile deal: $50 Blackberry, $59.99 monthly family plan with 700 minutes and $9.99 hot spot at home. The hot spot at home allows free calling at home and any where else I can glom onto a WiFi network. Calls initiated on WiFi remain free if I walk away and move onto their cell network.

For now, I'm happy::)

That's not really the point, though... I mean, correct me if I'm completely misunderstanding this, but what I gather is that they (AT&T and/or Apple) expect you to return your phone if you cancel your contract with AT&T within 30 days? That's retarded... you should be able to keep the iPhone without a contract.

The reason they are doing that I would imagine is that the phone is subsidized by the carrier (AT&T/O2 whatever) so if you cancel and want to keep the phone, you have to then pay the money that makes up that subsidy (What i would imagine is the cost of a pay as u go phone i.e subsidy = £260-£100).

(Sorry if your working in dollars, just multiply those numbers by 2 and you pretty much there).

But I can see exactly where they are coming from when they make you return the phone if you cancel so long as I am understanding this right :)

Please go somewhere else to express your anger. Apple doesn't read these forums. Or better try sending this in an email to Steve. I am sure he'll send you a nice looking :apple:iFone.

Unreal. The smoke and mirrors on that stage on Monday was thick! ATTpple has owned Steve, owned him!

I am pretty excite about the iPhone 3g.
I will take AT&T anyway. Do I have any other option in the USA? T-Mobile? No thanks. I am not in love with AT&T, but is understandable that they want to protect their investment.
My only desire was a 32gig version. That probably will come in January, just like the 16gig did this year, but I can live without that.
As for the plastic case, they say one of the reason was the reception. if that improves it, I am OK with it. I'll buy a protective case anyway, so the scratch prone plastic is not an issue.
I am happy with the lower price and even tough tit cost $40 more during two years, I am fine with that. We get a much better iPhone in the end anyway.

Now if more chargers are on the way like GPS, then that would definitely disappoint many people, including me. I hope it doesn't happen.
