it'll be free on google maps, jus like it is on all of our smartphones... but if a telenav or another 3rd party comes along they will charge.

Hey CWeems

Since you work at AT&T, does the $30 data plan include 200 texts? I've heard YES I have heard NO. What the real story with Text Messages.

so let me get this straight....

if you want the whole experience of the iphone 3g you will pay..

$199 for the phone
$36 activation fee
$39.99 minimum phone plan
$30 minimum internet plan
$5 minimum text messages (200 messages)
$99 yearly for mobile me if you want everything push ($8.25 monthly)

so $236 upfront plus $75 for the first month = $311 out the door
plus $75 + $8.25 = $83.25 + tax time 12 months = $1000 dollars a year

$1000 dollars a year!!!?!!!!!?!!!!!! anyone else see a problem with this?

Ummm it's not cheap but what would you pay for comparable service from another carrier, say Verizon? Probably a minimum $70/month. There's nothing really 100% comparable to mobile me, but let's just say you but web-hosting for like $5/month - that's still like $900 for the year for most likely much less overall utility.

Edit: just checked and Verizon's cheapest voice and data plan starts at $79.99/month

How much do you pay for your cell phone with unlimited data service per month now?

No, I don't see a problem with it. In fact, it's cheaper than the Verizon voice/data/text plan I had a year ago (and dumped for iPhone 1, not to mention my Verizon "smartphone" cost me $499 up front).

I love it when people finally see the light.

Hey, Apple! You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time!!!

Or can you? It'll sure look like you can come July 11!!

If only there were some way to get this "insider" info that we hardcore fans possess broadcast to the masses so that they won't make an impulse buy they'll regret later (sooner than later, actually) --- hmmmm, but how can we do it?!! LOL

Ummm make that $299 for the phone. 8GB is NOTHING if you want to have music, photos, and apps on your new phone. So you pretty much need to buy the 16GB to get any entertainment value out of it! lol

Though many will beat up on you for this, I somewhat agree with you that prices these days are getting higher and higher

Just comes down to choices

Do you need the iPhone that badly? Can another service give you the same or more for less?

I could latch onto another plan that would save me $15 less a month but the phone would be a crappy cingular one that has half the options of an iPhone with no music player on it

$20. I already had a RAZR on a family plan ($69 for 2 phones w/o data) and it only cost $20 extra for the iPhone data. So I guess technically you could say $55 (1/2 of voice + $20).

lol

Good point, really AT&T made it half the cost. That probably will complicate upgrades in the future...

HA HA HA!!! - Apple has the highest profit margins (read markup) of the major hardware companies. Now they'll cover sales tax???

I'm looking forward to it, realizing it is more expensive than even the released original iPhone. Anyone know if you can use bluetooth data to share your 3G internet w/ a laptop? You can do this w/ a Tilt or other internet ready 3G phone.

Maybe if someone wants to sell their old 2G iPhone to me for a good price I'll get that instead...

each variant of the new iphone 3G is actually the same price as the 1st gen iphone. All the rumors were true -- AT&T is just subsidizing it for $200!! hahaha am I brilliant or what!!

There's a big fat a$$ asterisk on Apple's website just after the "$199" number! Check it out! lol

Apple: Busted!!

It's just a matter of time before this news makes it to Neil Cavuto's show (or one of those other financial/money management shows). Then it's light out for the new iphone 3G!!! It's gonna make Apple and AT&T look as if they were in collusion with each other to trick the public!! lol

Welcome to macrumors, VDA. You joined today just to post that most excellent comment? That asterisk has always been there. I don't understand your point. Are you trying to say you are angry & jealous that you are stuck with a windows based phone while all the cool people have iPhones? Come on, join us!

Tsk, tsk, your jealousy makes you have such anger inside. If you had an iPhone you'd always be happy!!

Sticking with my Blackberry

The iPhone 3G is a nice piece of hardware, but the deal killers for me are:

1.) Tied to ATT
2.) No voice dialing (let alone bluetooth voice dialing)
3.) No DUN bluetooth profile, AFAIK
4.) No stereo bluetooth, AFAIK
5.) No video recording

And my Pearl gets Sprint TV and I can replace the battery myself. Also, in my area there's better 3G coverage with Sprint and faster data with EVDO compared to HSDPA. Plus, my $30/mo unlimited data plan includes text messaging and basic Sprint TV which I use a lot to get Weather Channel forecasts, NFL Network, and national news. If I don't lose features, I may move to the Samsung Instinct.

This is part of the reason I am not interested in the iPhone. With Sprint I got my Pearl for $99. I already had a 13% corporate discount and when I found out I'd have to pay $10/mo more for unlimited data on the Blackberry compared to my previous phone, the CSR increased my discount to 25% even though I made it clear I'd still stick with them despite the plan increase (would've just stuck with my current phone). And my new phone activation fee was waived. So for me:

$99 for the Blackberry Pearl (w/ MIR)
$0 for activation
$59.99 for 550 anytime minutes, free second line of service, nights at 7p
$20 one time for nights at 6p ($1.67/mo)
$30 for unlimited Blackberry with text messaging included

And factor in my 25% discount... I end up paying less than $90/mo for my phone, my wife's (with her own text plan), and my dad's.

My only beef with Sprint is they have too many foriegn CSRs which create difficulties in communicating, and Sprint often messes up my bill. HOWEVER, they ALWAYS fix my issues and usually throw in a little something extra for my troubles. Just be nice to the CSR and they usually bend over backwards to make you happy (probably true for many carriers).

Question?

Ok...so after reading about 10 pages of this interesting (and long) thread I still have a question that has not been asked yet (maybe it is due to the fact that i am only one of the few 16 year olds on here). Will I be able to get an iphone 3g if I am on an extra line on a family plan with at&t. Will I only be required to pay $30 more a month for unlimited 3g data? And since I am already a customer of at&t do we have to pay an activation fee (which are ridiculous)? Just a couple of questions that I still have. This will be my first iphone but still on the fence about it.

And concerning the conversation between fluffy bunny and thaitillidie, I must agree with paladin...lol! It has been fun to watch the immaturity of many adults in this forum "drama"...I am probably going to get a lot of flak for that comment!

I'm going to guess that it does not. If you look at the plans on the AT&T site, the $30 unlimited data plan they currently offer does not include any texts.

The GPS comes with the data plan right? like its data related just like safari? Anyawys I dont mind it, I figured it out and If me and my family all got 3G iPhones with the contract we would be paying less (and all we have is unlimited text) our current plan is really crappy.

Do you think apple/att will allow people to buy more than one iphone w/o requiring to activate each one of them? What if I wanted to have a backup iphone...I obviously don't want to pay for another contract.

So, if they do allow this, I would assume that they'd have to sell the second iphone at the full/unsubsidized rate. Once the extra phones are in people's hands, they can sell them (after people figure out how to unlock it) on the unlocked black market.

Or if you were purchasing one as a gift?

I'll bet you'll pay an activation fee. Had ATT and got new phone, required $36 to change SIMs. This was not an iPhone activation. Nickel and dime us. Like all cell carriers in the US.

Also, if you just want to add the "iPhone service" you have to be on a current plan. I couldn't just pay the $20 w/ iPhone 2G as my voice/data plan had become more expensive and I would have to convert to a currently offered plan. Annoying!

how much could the penalized fee be?

I would think something along the lines of the early termination fee plus first month voice and data cost...so around 225-250. Purely speculation on my part but it would make sense.

It makes me sad that "joe average" gets their information from a propaganda news service such as fox. oh well...at least maybe they won't submit to these lame contracts...
Fox was just an example - the same basic story has been making the rounds of the "mainstream" media. I was not making a comment on the worthiness of Fox news.

hey, I'm new here and have been reading through this topic but cannot find the answer to my specific question. So please excuse me if this has already been answered .
My T-Mobile contract ends in about a week, so I need to switch to ATT (obviously). The 3G Iphone comes out within my 30 days, but will I be charged extra for the phone since I will not sign a 2 year agreement at the date of purchase of the Iphone? I called ATT to ask them this, and was told that there was no subsidized price of the phone. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Sorry again if this has been answered.

If other reports are to be believed, you should be able to buy the iphone at the subsidized price of 199/299 when it is released.
