hey, I'm new here and have been reading through this topic but cannot find the answer to my specific question. So please excuse me if this has already been answered .
My T-Mobile contract ends in about a week, so I need to switch to ATT (obviously). The 3G Iphone comes out within my 30 days, but will I be charged extra for the phone since I will not sign a 2 year agreement at the date of purchase of the Iphone? I called ATT to ask them this, and was told that there was no subsidized price of the phone. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Sorry again if this has been answered.

Also, this phone IS subsidized. Read in one story where AT&T is paying roughly $600 million to Apple to subsidize the cost of the phone. Obviously they believe they will make more than that back with the new subscribers.

MobileMe versus Gmail

Off topic a bit so I apologize. Just trying to understand how MobileMe is different from Gmail and Google Calendar? You get more storage with MobileMe (20GB vs 7GB) but Gmail is also free and I'm not even close to using my 7GB.

On the surface they seem to be very very similar, am I missing something?

I wouldn't upgrade

In looking at the new features and pricing plan, if I were an existing iphone owner I probably would not upgrade. Just take the 2.0 update and wait for the next update. However, as I've never owned an iphone, I'm looking very much forward to purchasing one of these new models. I specifically waited because I knew there would be an update and I typically don't buy v1.0 of anything. Hope this is worth the wait, I suspect it will be...

Fox was just an example - the same basic story has been making the rounds of the "mainstream" media. I was not making a comment on the worthiness of Fox news.

Oh yea i know, i was just making light of the situation, i am saddened at my decreasing likelihood that I will purchase an Iphone now with all these fees mounting:(

Theres actually an article on CNN.com about it too http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-33478

Agree, SDK is the most important upgrade 7/11/08. If current iPhone users upgrade, they'll pay and extra $10/month x12mos for data, $5-10 for text messaging and $199-$299 for the upgrade. This would be ~$380-$540 for the next year w/ the only addition being GPS/3G. (I could care less about GPS, but 3G may be worth it...)

Also, they'd be locked into AT&T for 12 more months. What if Apple opens up the phone to different carriers? AT&T is not my first choice. Was the initial contract with AT&T for 2 or 4 years? Guess Jobs and ATT know...

If I owned an iPhone I'd wait for the December revision w/ 32GB, 3.1 mp camera or smaller sizes, better battery life etc. This hardware revision seems lazy, GPS and 3G. The plastic looks cheap, we went from MBP to MB for the iPhone styling. I'll bet most of their resources was focused on software this time.

I, like many, was all for the 3G but now, I think I'll sit this one out. No storage increase, MMS, or flash or better camera? I like my OGiPhone.

They are not going to up the camera in December. If anything we will get a 16 GB RED in November along with a price drop in the iPod touch and possible redesign. Full Screen hdd possible?

We won't see a 'new' iPhone until next year.

Imagine the kicking, screaming, and protesting if a new iPhone with a 3+mp camera were to be released in November. Demands for trade-ins would go through the roof.

I agree that there won't be a camera update until the next full iphone revision although i do think that we will see a space upgrade before the holidays, if not replacing the 8GB with 16 than at least adding a 32 for 399

the only hope for an update that soon would be if they upped a spec before july 11. on another note... it's hard to believe early reports saying that the glossy plastic seems better than it looks, idk about that one

It could be true. Just think of the difference between the plastic on a dell and the plastic on a thinkpad. Or the difference between a plastic fork and acrylic windows. Plastic _can_ be nice.

On the other hand, it usually isn't.

According to Macworld, it's not the "nice" kind of plastic. It's the scratch-happy plastic that was on the iPod nano and iPod. Basically, the iPhone will really need a case this time around.

Time to get out the acrylic and Polyglycoat.

Plus General Electric who were number 6 in last year's Fortune 500 companies.

Argument fails.

I've been ready for that. GE is an offense contractor, no longer makes consumer electronics AFAIK. Whole lot of stainless appliances though. And owns NBC of course.

Their iGadget days are over. Without a trace. Now if that's what you want for Apple....

Argument STRENGTHENED. Thanks for that! :apple:

you never heard of phillips?

but here's another for your list of early transistor radio manufacturers: Zenith.

Never saw a phillips transistor radio here in the US in my life.

Thanks for Zenith; another iGadget purveyor on the dust heap of history.

And at Zenith, the quality went in before the name went on...:apple:

Somehow I'm not really surprised …

The contract between Apple and AT&T was 5 years... so you got 4 more years to wait before you see that go away. Assuming they don't sign another contract with one another. But in the US, you basically only have AT&T and T-Mobile running on GSM, though it shouldn't be that difficult for Apple to create CDMA phones...

Good luck with that. The :apple: Cell Phone Activation Geniuses :apple: will have strict orders to make sure the iPhone is activated before handing it over to you i'm sure. At 20 minutes per phone activation, that will be one long and brutal line on July 11th. I'd wait a few days before going into the store to see how this all shakes out with the in store activation process.

People seem to have missed the process where AT&T has streamlined the process to help speed up activatons, so it should take less time than normal activations.

Since most people probably wouldn't care, that is unlikely. People erroneously think an awesome camera is some kind of required feature for most people. Most people enjoy having some sort of way to take pictures with their phone because most people HATE carrying cameras around.

In terms of how good that camera is, most people don't care, because they wouldn't care if the camera was not there at all.

Shame you weren't better prepared then. GE licence their home electronics through Jasco but they're still GE branded. The telephony side is dealt with by Thomson. They still sell household appliances through the GE brand directly.

Of course, they no longer manufacture radios or stereos or TVs because that's not where their margins lie. Which just goes to show that companies adapt and survive according to market led propositions. The ones that don't die.

Point is GE are still around because they adapted. Apple are merely doing the same which is why your argument fails.

Hi all,

I currently have ATT with a Blackjack II (I know, I Know)..because it was $99 when I bought instead of the higher priced Iphone. However, I really want to get the iphone since I use a mac at home...the price was the only thing that deterred me in the past.

Does anyone know if I will be able to buy the new iphone, maybe start a new contract (not a big deal since my contract only started a few months ago), without any major fees. I already have the data plan on my Blackjack, so I wouldn't expect any new fees except the cost of the phone.

Furthermore, if I do get the new iphone, I won't need the Blackjack anymore. Can I just sell it (or give) to someone that also has ATT and they can put it into service by switching SIM cards? I remember Nextel I could just slip the SIM into a different phone and it would be fine.

Thanks for all the help.

Won't be released in November, and that certainly won't be the only feature of the next iPhone revision. I think the next revision will have a probable 3.0 firmware that will add even basic functionality, like MMS and cut/copy/paste. In addition, hopefully there will be an affordable 32 GB model, as well as an improved camera. I'm not sure if it's possible to use a faster band of 3G, but if so, maybe that will be included, as well.

Apple will never do MMS, they want to sell you a new product, look at iPods.

My 2 megapixel digital camera takes extremely sharp, clear pictures because it has a good sensor. My 8 megapixel camera takes even better pictures, only because it has a better sensor. The picture quality is NOT determined by the megapixel count, only the sensor. A cell phone is too small to have a decent sensor, so a 5 megapixel camera will not give better pictures than a 2 megapixel camera in the cell phone unless a much better sensor is installed. The only thing gained by more megapixels is the size of the picture. But, the size of the phone would have to increase with the better sensor.
