iPhone 3G Launching at 8AM!!!!

See how easy it is for it to suddenly "look" like something is confirmed just because a few people say so? I'll go on record as saying I'm perfectly willing to believe the OP's email he posted from his friend is legit...and that it also doesn't mean the iPhone is launching at 8AM. Currently, I'm a fan of my theory that this was a misunderstanding in one store. If there was a launch time sent to store managers in a memo, THAT ACTUAL MEMO would have been leaked to places like gizmodo just as quickly as the two previous leaked AT&T memos to store managers were.

What's more likely is that AT&T staff are coming in early (e.g., 8AM) to prepare for the launch (last minute training, display/demo setups, etc.), but that the actual launch time (i.e., time on sale to end customers) is still unknown. Nevertheless, we're sure to hear about it before July 11.

Because I had the time to do it, it was easy, and I happen to catch the thread when a couple of people had said that their AT&T stores allegedly "confirmed" it, when they were just regurgitating the same rumors we're all reading.

I really, utterly don't care whether it launches at 8AM, 6PM, or 12:34. But what I do care about is misinformation not getting repeated. As a previous poster said, the process that is happening here is how rumor becomes "fact".

I decided, just for the hell of it, to actually try to confirm it with store managers and staff. Not a single store has, including ones others said had confirmed it — which most people would take at face value and assume the 8AM time is then "correct".

What's more likely is the scenario I described in my two previous posts: that a single store had a misunderstanding about starting early to prep vs. on-sale time, or else we likely would have seen the actual memo to managers as opposed to an internal store email talking about bagels and pizza.

Dude give it up. I have read every single response he has made to your OP and i have to say he not once said anything personal about you. His main argument is that he too as anyone of us could have easily made that email and posted it as a rumor. Because of that notion it is only logical that we, as we should do all rumors on MR, take it with a grain of salt until ATT or Apple makes a public announcement on the subject. As someone had posted before, there is more than two weeks before launch and official word can come out. That makes total sense to me and should to everyone on MR. Now, i understand frustration with an ordeal such as this. WRONG. His words are in no way an attack on you and i think you clearly realize that. it almost seems from my perspective that you are stoking the fire, just kind of playing along because arguing is fun. Every single time he made response you came back asking him in an annoying fashion if that was another personal attack when he clearly wasn't. Still he responded with dignity each time reiterating his claims instead of telling you to **** and read what he said. He seemed to work with your ignorance or willful ignorance and respond. Sorry if that sounded mean, but seriously he wasn't making attacks.

Look, i am eagerly awaiting this release as much as the next so i get it that this is such a hot topic right now, but we should just wait until maybe next week or so and perhaps official word will come.

If this all goes down, good job then and hope to see you in later iphone releases with some new information.

I have some personal connections to ATT reps in the area, i mean the higher people on the list than lets say your managers or staff workers, and i am sending some emails out to my friends to get some word on it. if and when i get something i will gladly post it.

That is talking about people who incorrectly say "I could care less". The correct usage, meaning that one doesn't care about something at all, is "I couldn't care less" (which is what I said).

Of course, this is really just a figure of speech. Of course I "care" about this, else I wouldn't even be posting here. But my point is I really don't care WHEN it launches. What I "care" about is this seeming process of one person saying something, a dozen blogs picking it up (when they're really just regurgitating the SAME rumor), and then all of a sudden becoming "fact".

Again, it would seem more likely to me that this is a misunderstanding than that every AT&T and Apple store is going to open one to two hours earlier than their normal opening time, when at least SOME of these stores are in venues whose hours are beyond their control.

It may be that this is correct and the launch is really at 8AM. But given that you are the ONLY person who has that info, and every other site "reporting" this seems to have gotten the "tip" from here, and everyone else who said other stores "confirmed" it actually didn't confirm anything when those SAME stores were called...well, it just seems like it's more likely that this one store had a little internal misunderstanding about the launch time than that it's actually launching at 8AM. See what I'm saying? This isn't saying you are a liar, and isn't saying that your friend really didn't get this email — I'm sure he did.

But until at least ONE other place confirms it in a way that can be duplicated by others (i.e., calling in and asking, and getting the same answer), OR the original memo is leaked, OR there is a press release, the 8AM time is in serious doubt. That's all I really have to say. This doesn't impugn your own integrity or that of your friend. It just means whoever sent that email might have misunderstood the situation, given that I can find not a single other AT&T store, or any other independent story, able to confirm it.

And again: I don't care when it does or doesn't go on sale, because I will be getting one on July 11 regardless of what time of day it goes on sale.

If you don't care then just don't bother responding. Actions speak louder than words ;) We are ALL on the SAME side. We're all gon cop the iPhone 3G on the 11th of July regardless of what time they open. I think it's very feasible that we will see a 8AM opening due to the activation process, but this is just my opinion.

I don't care when it launches...I DO care that people understand the process that is going on here, logically. Other rumors have a great deal of veracity or can be independently confirmed. This one is only an internal store email at best, which could be a misunderstanding. We'll see. I certainly don't think an 8AM launch is impossible, and that would sure make my July 11 a hell of a lot more pleasant, but I'm just saying that the information we have here that is known is hardly confirmation.

But it matters not, to me, what time of the day it launches.

Lol that picture could have been done by anyone. I don't think Apple would release the iPhone at 8 A.M. I am thinking more like 12:00 p.m (afternoon, since people still don't know the difference between a.m and p.m) to 6:00p.m.

Aww... I was hoping this thread would go on for another 20 pages.... ;-)

I do believe the OP actually got a forwarded e-mail from his friend that works at AT&T (cause fighting so hard to prove such "nothing" news would be really, really sad, otherwise), but I can also see daveschroeder's point in that it's quite possible there's a misunderstanding about 8am being on-sale time vs. training time. (Training time makes a little more sense, since I doubt they'll be training with the phone the day before. This could still mean the phone goes on sale at regular opening hours, though!)

Really -- we won't know for sure until there's an official announcement made, which will surely come before the 11th. So while it would be fun to see this thread go on forever, it really should have ended 5 pages ago... :rolleyes:

Here's another point, both stores closed for an hour last year... thats 1 hour of lost business so by opening up an hour earlier that means they gain extra business... what i am getting at is it makes fiscal sense.
 
When I asked at the Optus store here in Melbourne Australia, the lady working said that they would be opening at 7AM for those that made a deposit via their website.

I hold in my hand, that very deposit.
