I don't know that seems kind of sketchy to me.
I don't see how it would help when it has nothing to do with devices or anything.

I am doing some window xp updates now to see if maybe some new devices and stuff install..
though the USB mass storage device is no where to be found on my windows xp..some people say but running that it might help..but it is no where on the computer.

Take it to the genius bar.

This happened to me twice. Nothing worked. I took it to the genius bar and they replaced it, both times.

I have no warranty. I am lucky the guy replaced my phone free of charge. I don't wanna go back there and have them charge me 199.

It doesn't matter if you have no warranty when Apple gave you the brand new phone YESTERDAY. I'm sure they'd have some understanding if you explain the problem.

Is it just me..

or does anyone else get the feeling that the OP shouldn't be left alone with electronics? ;)

just got off the phone with an apple rep and apple software tech

2 hours and nothing has been resolved..so I have an appointment at the apple store at 3:30..he said if they can't fix it then they will replace the phone again..and he said I need to get my USB and wall plug replaced..so I guess I am getting everything new..and im hoping for free or I'll cry..even though the guy reassured me it should be for free.

lets see what happens!

No!

Error 1604 is USB related, just use another computer and it will be fine!

Error 1604/1603 or 160x is USB mis communication, nothing a restart, USB change won't fix. BTW, if it fails on your computer, try another one. (Even a USB cord swap helps)

You'll see once in the Apple Store all they'll do is hit Restore and your phone will come back to life. You can do that, just use another computer.

The guy is not very tech savvy, it's best just let the genius bar help him.

turns out he was right..

Went to the Genius Bar..and they restored my phone..so no longer is it stuck on recovery mode thank goodness...he said that it should find my device now.

well I just got home and I am still getting

USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED.
iTunes can't find it either AND I tried to connect it to the wall plug and it won't charge. BUT when I connected at the store it worked.

So now I got to just leave my phone alone until I can go back yet again tomorrow to see if they can replace my USB chord and see if that is the issue..he said to go back up there if there is any problems.

AHHH this is so frustrating..I only have this computer so I really need it to work on this computer.

Bring your computer with you.

or

Don't restore.

no I am not restoring it at all plus there is no way I can restore the phone because my computer won't detect it at all!

see I would take my laptop up there but this laptop is old as dirt..its running on windows xp..toshiba..but I have to use like a wireless keyboard and mouse on it because for some reason a really long time ago certain keys on the laptop won't work.. I know what yall are thinking..that its my computer..

but with my old iphone I never had these problems..it recognized my phone and synced and did everything until it decided to stop charging..which is why I think it is the USB that might be the issue..hmm I don't know though.

Has anyone had this problem though I feel like I am alone in this one lol

Well, I think your laptop's USB port has died. If you plug it into any other computer, your iPhone should be recognized correctly, since it worked for the geniuses at the Apple Store.

Already told OP to try another computer and that it was the USB port, but I am sure it sounded something like, "blah blah blah, not working" to him :).

actually the USB port in my laptop is just fine..

I can connect my camera in the exact same one and all of the other ones and it is recognized..as well as my little sisters iPod shuffle and my wireless keyboard and mouse...so the USB port isn't the problem.

I think its the USB cable that is the problem..because it also won't charge my phone in the wall. I am gonna try to see if I can borrow someones USB cable to see if that is the problem..and then go to apple to see if they can replace it.

I rather not pay 50 bucks for a new usb chord lol

okay sweet.

I am going to test this out with someone elses USB to see if this is the problem..if not..to Apple I go..once again..ahh I hope its just the USB chord.

like im really tempted to just downgrade to the 3.0 firmware...seriously none of this ever happened with my old iPhone 3G besides the fact the battery died. This..3.1.2 software bites.

It's not iTunes or the iPhone. It's Windows. I know this Error because I have seen it before. Way too many times. It happened to me. Also, it happens to many of my friends' Windows based laptops. It's a USB thing with Windows where it just won't work no matter what you do. Everything else works (thumb drives, Portable HDDs) but your iPhone fails. Your USB ports are fine, it's a driver thing.

Oh, by the way. Check Windows itself, because every time Windows doesn't finish doing an iPhone restore, your HDD looses empty space. You see, every time iTunes does a Restore, it unzips everything to the HDD (not RAM) and if it fails (by fails I mean you make it stop by force and iTunes doesn't tell you it failed) to restore/update that space is lost. Windows doesn't know how to handle this, so it deletes the unzipped data and replaces it with garbage and makes it look as used up storage. If you did get the "iTunes Error 160x" message box, it's ok, you get the space back, otherwise, you don't.

If a borrowed USB cable doesn't work, or if your USB cable works on a borrowed computer, then despite all your protestations it is probably your USB port. Just because your USB port works with other devices doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it.

My guess is that you've got a driver error on your computer or some kind of incompatible driver. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the USB controller in Device Manager. Might work. You could also try checking the manufacturer's website for updated USB drivers.

- use another computer
- try a new chord
- if you are using a usb hub - skip it and go directly in to the computer
- or try using a usb hub..

I have seen errors like this .. always able to get around them.

I am going to try it with a different USB chord today.
I already went to the Apple store and they finished the restore on the phone on their computer..so the iPhone is fine.

the reason I don't think its my USB port..is because..my iPhone 3G before I got it replaced worked fine, it would sync it would charge and then one day it stopped charging in the wall..and I had to resort to using the computer. Then the computer at school didn't work..and then it wouldn't even charge here..the last thing it did was give me the lightening bolt for about a minute and then show the plug..as in it was plugged in but not charging. It did that with a different USB chord. That error was the phone..because it died and a forced turn on wouldn't do anything to it..that is why Apple gave me a new phone.

I came home with my new iPhone 3G and wanted to restore it..instead of getting on my page..I got on my moms page and used her iTunes that is empty..she has no music..because I didn't want to put my other stuff on the phone yet...I did this without a SIM plugged into it.

The computer recognized the phone..it gave me the camera pop up and it was charging my phone..it worked absolutely like it should *with my old usb chord*..and then after I got the error message..it was mid way through the restore..after the files were done extracting and everything. It says "an error has occured iTunes cannont complete restore" something like that..and ever since then Windows gives me the "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED" message.

How is it..that it worked fine up until the iTunes error?

Like I said, driver error. Windows doesn't play nice with Apple stuff...

so what do I do? Because this is the only computer I have..it has all my music and info on it? So I NEED my iPhone to work with this computer.

If anyone has experienced this problem and knows how to fix it..please please please let me know what you did..or if you have any idea how to fix it. Still haven't tested the new cable yet, but I wanna fix this issue with windows first..just in case.

these are the things I have done so far.
uninstalled itunes 9 and re installed it...about 6 times..the correct way..twice with an apple rep on the phone.
in Device Manager under USB Bus Controllers my iPhone shows up as "Unknown Device"..I have updated drivers for it..by searching my own..as in apple mobile-> drivers..didn't come up with a better driver
I have scanned for hardware updates for my "Unknown Device" and nothing..
I have uninstalled all of the USB ports and Windows XP will reinstall them automatically..still nothing.

Any other methods I should try? I even did the ridiculous unplugging it from the wall and having it shut down for a 30 mins..then restarting..and nothing.
