Just restore from Itunes, and update to the 5A347 Firmware =)

My iTunes keeps saying I have the most recent 2.0. But I have the 5A345 firmware.

If I restore, will it put 5A457 on my iPhone?

Just want to add that the yellow tint people are discussing really isn't that bad, atleast for me, it is visible but really doesn't detract from its usability.

So far I love it. Yeah, the wait to activate was a pain, but all in all it wasn't THAT bad for me. My timing was good as I started trying to activate toward the end of the "issues". Would have been nice to avoid that, but I'm super happy with my iPhone!:D

No activation problems here, bought at 5:15 PM EST, brought home and activated a little before 6 pm. MobileMe synced all my contacts, calendars, over too! The Apple gods must have blessed me!

P.S: I was an original iPhone ATT customer!

yay!

One point of confusion is whether or not 3rd parties will be able to offer a turn-by-turn GPS solution for the iPhone. Questions about SDK conditions and antenna size have been raised in previous reviews, but TeleNav confirmed to Gizmodo that they will be launching a 3D moving map GPS application with turn-by-turn voice guidance.

yess!! turn by turn nav!! woot

Good timing on your part...by that point the kinks had been worked out.

Well Done

As usual an excellent article, very well summarized and written.
Good job guys !

I've checked the iphone 3G earlier in a shop and I think I'll stick to the first generation.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first people in line at my AT&T store and I was in and out in under 10 minutes. The phone feels better than the original ones I've handled, smoother, but with a much better grip. As someone whose old phone couldn't do much more than call or text, this is amazing. It feels like something that I'm going to be able to grow into with all the possibilities it offers and will be worth every cent I put into it. Very glad I waited for this edition of the phone so far and got into line early enough to be right at the head of the line, which was well over a hundred people by opening time with more coming.

I think people are too harsh with this server issue. You have 6 million current users trying to get 2.0. Couple with what, a million more users using the same systems to activate? C'mon what server do you know that can handle potentially 7 to 8 million data request that runs up to 20 minutes a session.

Oh wait maybe Apple should have rented those IBM supercomputers for this event. :p

random but some apps that were free yesterday r no longer free today ... how weird

What is the name of the programs?

And you are sure that it's not just another program that can the same thing, but someone else made?
I found 4 "flashligth" programs 1 free, that just turn your screen white.
and 3 that would have money for there "flashligth" ... but okey, the ones that cost money had the option to change the couler to something else then white. But they still called them self "flashligths"

:mad::confused::apple::(:eek:

This whole launch event was one big ridiculous fiasco...

Just look at it from a neutral point of view:

MobileMe down and not working
+ no more iCards...

Activation Servers collapsed
what's the activation good for anyways? The phone is available almost worldwide and... Sim-locking it would be sufficient.

They also screwed up the 2.0 firmare release
They released a 2.0 firmware that only works correctly on the 3G.
The 2.0 update left some ppl with bricked phones.
They rereleased the 2.0 firmware silently as if nothing had happened

Bad supply of stock
Belgian iPhones sold out within minutes nation wide
In general: European stock sold out within minutes
YET EVERY APPLE RETAIL STORE IN THE U.S. HAS PLENTY OF STOCK:
http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/availability.html

Not a single store is sold out (some lack the Black 16GB Model, but that's it)

overall the whole iPhone launch was just one huge fiasco

Therefore I tagged the Newspost negative!

Maybe I'll head down to the South Coast Plaza Store in a few days as I'll need an iPhone for development and research...

Unhappy about the iPhone

15.000 iPhones sold in germany on its first day woooot and mine is coming tomorrow morning :D

I wish I was as happy with the news of the new iPhone as you are. I've always been number 1 fan of all Apple... Especially that I've been waiting for an iPhone since it was a rumor. I was so excited I told everybody I was gonna get one. But the one thing that got me to jump ship on the iPhone was a simple fix. I had to be dependent on an Apple rep to change my battery. That don't fly with me at all, especially with identity theft in an upraise. I don't know who is hire in retails these day. It will be my luck I handed over my iPhone, if I had one to a disgruntle employee. You hear this crap all over the news every day, about employee stealing company information for their own gain. It's nothing new at all. It's happening NOW as you read this. Big issue here as well is you can not walk in with battery problems, you must make an appointment with an Apple Genius. Which adds even more DOWN time of you cell phone use. What next I have to go to Athletic Footwear to have them tie my sneakers, cause I bought it from their store?????? Please! Find another SUCKER! At least with an LG Dare your guaranty ZERO down time if you ever had battery issues. Because you can change it your self. The way it is suppose to be in life... In NYC it's THE LAW to use hand free dialing. So I use voice dialing like ten thousand times a day. I been using voice dialing for 22 years on so many CHEAP FREE phone. Hmm.. Why should anyone be looking toward the App Store to get sh*t it should already have in it? Shouldn't the App Store be for innovative Apps? Voice Dialing isn't innovative and shouldn't be in the App Store. It's like offering a phone with out a dialing capability, so now you will have to go to the App Store to download a dailing App to make Calls. Hello! It is 2008 isn't it?

Only a line here to note the activation problems many people are still facing, myself included. Can't find anything at AT&T or Apple's web sites about that either. Any suggestions out there? I was told by AT&T phone rep to keep "power cycling" until it eventually get service.

I got a 16GB white phone today and it's up and running marvelously. I just went to the golf course for a few hours to prevent my own frustrations after my purchase. When I got home I had to connect the ipone and then eject it about 5 times over the course of an hour before it connected to the apple website for activation. When the connection failed the connection error message appeared. I agree that apple should have rolled our V2.0 earlier to allow original iphone users the ability to update their software before today's onslaught, but oh well. I'm sure they're thinking the same thing you are - just not publicly, yet. This was much better than the last activation and I would think the next one will go even better. Those of us on thewest caost didn't have a prayer of instant activation since we're the last time zone in the continental US. I would think no one in Hawaii would have problems. :) Just have patience and it will work.

First impression:

Looks cool, feel warmer to the touch, easier to hold than the original; overall a good device, but the pricing plans are terrible. $30 for data and no messaging? I'd buy the phone unsubsidized, without a contract at any time, but those plans just put me off.

I'll stick with my superior Nokia E90... and my $20 unlimited data and 200 messages.

And if you're curious, I did wait 3 hours to see the phone and not buy it. I did buy a new AC adapter for my MBP (main reason I went to the store).

Enough with the non-rumor non-event iphone stories on the macrumors front page already!

Get over it already and be glad you aren't starving to death in a 3rd world country.

You know what they say--there's no such thing as bad press.

The Apple availability website isn't updated until 9PM Eastern.

711 vs. 911: Which was the more tragic day for America

Just google the word "iPhone"...peruse the news categories...and weap for all the lost souls on this most tragic of days for not just Americans but for people all over the world!

But resist the urge to giggle at the absurdity of it all.

Experience Makes the Difference

I went up to the Apple Store in Norfolk, Virginia and got a 16GB iPhone. Strangely enough, I went with the white one, because when you see it, it sells the white. (Also shows you bought the Big Daddy) Activation was a breeze, and was out in 20 minutes. The phone even buzzed in the box as I was walking out.

I was reluctant to move from my first generation iPhone. But not anymore. I went to the store half-heartedly, but I can assure you that this phone is another giant step forward in mobile phones. I really like the first generation, in spite of some of the shortcomings, and this one will be another winner, in my opinion.

What is to like...

1. Screen looks richer, sharper and deeper in color.

2. White looks good. Black looks nice, but there were fingerprints all over the place.

3. The curve of the phone feels good in your hand. It actually feels more natural then the first generation phone. In fact, the first gen feels boxy by comparison.

4. Everything feels snappy. GPS is nice, everything else feels great.

5. Sound clarity is amazing. I noticed the difference speaking to my mother on way home. Before had to turn up volume all the way, now I had to actually turn it down. And it was cleaner, with no issue in sound quality.

Those are just a couple things to add to what has already been said. I went in not thinking to upgrade, but I couldn't resist. I know it will be worth the $299, and I think I will recoup some $$$ on ebay with the First Gen.

regarding feel.. what about slippery factor?
1st gen, i cannot use without some sort of case, sleeve, whatever.
its just too damn slick and slippery, like holding a 12" powerbook
is the 3G any less slippery in the hand?

P.S. - to counter the 1st gen's slipperyness, i like my Cozip snap on, but it does scratch the bezel quite a bit.
