Usage is a mix of Twitter apps, facebook app, web browser, music, 3d gaming, texting and a couple of calls
I'm damn impressed with the battery since its only on its 2nd charge
My battery drops 1% per hour in sleep generally.

I don't have a screen shot, but I have been running my battery down on purpose the last 2 nights to "calibrate" the battery. I am having a tough time getting it below 20% before bedtime! Last night my usage was exactly 5 hours when I got the 20% notice, the standy by time was 13 hours. Almost none of that was phone calls, however. Mostly internet, 3d gaming, and video.

I will concur that calibrating the battery has seemed to help quite a bit. The one thing I have noticed is that with the new percentage meter, I am obsessed with it....I almost wish I didn't know!

Here's my screenshot. Not sure if its good, bad, or indifferent. Didn't talk long, but heavy usage of safari and iPod. Bluetooth and wifi are on, screen brightness is around 80%.

update on 2g test

Here is the update on my 2g test, don't have screen shot at the moment

Well, I have had the same issues but the battery DID start getting a bit better.

I've run some tests daily, every day focusing on a different service or setting being on/off on the device.

First day, turned off mobileme push. That DID help
Second day, turned off yahoo push. That DIDN'T help so I turned it back on

Third day, turn off 3g, and leave it on 2g. That CONTINUES to help, since I am now on the FOURTH day, and it is STILL 50%

For this third day test, I turned on WIFI in the home and office, so it was using this data connection mostly for email and web browsing, twitter, other test and application usage plus about five speedtests.

So, currently I am at 48%
3 hours 55 minutes usage
28 hours 35 minutes standby
call time 23 minutes
battery at 46% now.

"iPhone has been plugged in since the last full charge."

Eh?

Here is mine

Wifi always on, except when im outside at work.

playing music all the time

Here is my screen shot from 4Pm this afternoon, I was down to 20%. Took the phone off the charger at 4:45am, i use microsoft exchange sync and gmail, 3G on all day, Browsed the web for about 1 hr total, used GPS for about 20 minutes, Location On, Bluetooth Off, made 1 5 minute call. Should this be a concern?

okay, here is my update

Here is my update from the 2G data only test.

If you recall the details above, I have done three tests now.

Full day, full data 3g, LBS on, etc.
Full day, push mobileme off,
Full day(s) 2G data only, but with WIFI on, no LBS, no mobileme push, but YAHOO PUSH on.

I did a lot of stuff, emails, texts, wifi web browsing, downloading applications, etc.

Here are the results.

The Usage times on these screen shots will vary GREATLY by user.

For instance, the reason the one poster is at 6+ hours of usage on one charge is because he listens to the iPod a lot.

It uses FAR less power than 3G data and WIFI data, etc.

Forgot to take a screenshot :( but I got about 7 hours usage and 1 day 10 hours standby.

Which is pretty nifty seeing how much of that was Safari browsing and 3G on all day.

How much 3G?

This is very true. I'm mostly interested in how much 3G surfing time is possible. I wasn't able to get the 5 hours (per specs) and my surfing was pretty light. I'm also curious if anyone is able to get the 9 hours (I think that's right) of wifi usage that Apple lists.

These screenshots indicate worse battery life than the 3g..

I could tinker all day long on my 3g and get 5+ hours of usage and over 24 hours of standby..

I don't know where Apple is getting these claims of better life..

Sure, turn off all the radios and get better life but what's the point in that.

agree.
Seems the battery performance is not quite consistent..some good some bad...

my current usage, looks like cycling the battery has helped quite a bit

?

I don't understand why ipod usage or other usage would make it last longer.

If the phone is ON, and connected to services etc., it will NEVER reach the types of hours listed for audio or video.

If somebodys usage say EIGHT hours, and one wonders how much of that was IPOD, it sort of also means that at least EIGHTS hours of that was data connectivity or WIFI, or other, unless the person shut off those features completly, WHILE using the ipod?

Is that correct, or totally wrong?

which i didnt do the only thing shut off is push. i have it on fetch every hour.

unfortunatly

Unfortunatly,

I think the biggest killer is 3G.

My tests seem to show,

GPS usage is the worst
3G is the next
Push is the next
WIFI comes next
Then brightness (will test today)
Then calls

I'm going to do a calls test, charge the phone and makes a call till the phone dies. We'll see if it lasts five hours.

I have 3g on, Push on, wifi on, localtion on. I used GPS quite a bit, did some internet surfing, e-mailing and playing with some apps. I am happy with the battery time I get.

a0200

It says usage: 4h 58 min. Standby is 1 Day, 7h

I don't use my phone a whole lot, but this is with a lot of texting, a few 30 minute calls, a bit of time on Safari, about an hour of iPod listening in the car, and wifi always on. Turning off location services did the trick for me. I also turned off my phone last night while I was sleeping from 1 AM to 8 AM. I'll post another screenie when it's almost dead.

i dont have a screenshot but on my 3GS i had

exstensive use of the video camera phone and TTR 2 internet surfing (on wifi) and music playing

i had 12 hours standby

and 5-6 hours usage and that left me at 18% i was confident that i probably could have used it (not standby) for another hour or 2 before it would have totaly died.

but i charged it instead cause i was going to be out late

every work day i listen to clse to 8 hours of music :) (sleep mode)

pretty light usage -- not sure if I should take it in or not. wifi off, a few calls, email checking, etc...

Bluetooth off, 3G off(don't have coverage at my house yet) and Wi-Fi, push notifications and location services on. Also note that I don't use voice that much. I text and IM rather than use voice. I've been browsing very heavily(mostly while on Wi-Fi) on the iPhone since I got the 3GS. My iMac and MacBook have been feeling severely neglected.
