Battery Life

I had massive battery life issues (and even posted a thread on this forum a few days ago) with my new 3GS. After six days, brought it to the Genius Bar. They made me do a restore which made the battery even worse. Yesterday they replaced the phone with a brand spanking new one... Seems like the battery is better. Genius claims no one has brought it in with similiar issues but from the message boards online, it seems like so many people are having issues... yet macrumors or even 9to5 aren't reporting the battery life problems.

I don't understand why ipod usage or other usage would make it last longer.

If the phone is ON, and connected to services etc., it will NEVER reach the types of hours listed for audio or video.

If somebodys usage say EIGHT hours, and one wonders how much of that was IPOD, it sort of also means that at least EIGHTS hours of that was data connectivity or WIFI, or other, unless the person shut off those features completly, WHILE using the ipod?

Is that correct, or totally wrong?
Being connected does not use power as much as USING the data.

No way.

The iPod uses very little power compared to, say, surfing the web on 3G.

The difference is rather big and noticeable.

Can someone please tell me what my usage means. It's says 0 minutes...

I've had it about 28 hours, and it's been plugged into my mac to charge any sync. 3G is sometime on, sometime off ( do you always leave 3G on ? ). Played music for about 3 hours, made one phone call.

EDIT: I think I've just worked it out myself... The usage is since last charge, so if I'm always plugging it in the Mac, then it's going to keep charging. So, to get an idea of how good/long it will last I need to charge it to 100%, then don't charge it until it runs out, thus resulting in the Usage in hours i.e 4 hours from a 100% charge.

Your Stand By and Usage times reset when the phone gets fully charged.

And yours is still plugged in.

As soon as you unplug it, it will start adding to those 0's.

Was pretty happy with this today. this was by switching between 3g and wifi (depending if i was in my house or out) location services were on for half the day. and mobile me push was on all day.

made sure i forced quit safari everytime i was finished.

mail

okay, this just makes no sense

So, I have done a test a day, either in this thread or others.

My latest today, was 3G on, ALL PUSH off, I HAD been leaving the yahoo push on, after having turned off the LBS, mobileme push and some other things.

But, today's data makes no sense, and actually, just 10 minutes ago, it showed 96%, not the 93% it is showing now, after nearly SEVEN hours of standby and some 2.5 hours of usage and 30+ minutes of calling.

3G on all day (until now), location off, push off.

Usage includes many emails, texts, a little over an hour of listening to music, and a bit of web browsing.

Ok :( Ill run it over night without a charge and when the battery gets low i'll post another screenshot if its worth it

Well, if the meter were accurate now it would be the equivalent of saying you have like 180 hours of usage time per charge. Let us know how the calibration goes.

Usage was at least 95% music and mostly in a decent 3G signal area

Based on my experience the 3GS battery life is by far the worst when compared to both other models.

I use my phone constantly and have to keep in plugged in while in the car or at my desk; otherwise it's dead by lunch time. I also carry the Incase power slider charged and ready to go in my car if for some reason I am away from power for extended periods of time. I need to call Apple and discuss it with them bout it but I just havent had the time.

Below are my usage stats.

Location Services on
Push Email on
3G on
Screen auto
No Wifi
No Bluetooth

Mine seems ok. When I first got it battery life was bad. I then did a complete battery drain and recharge with power off. Seems a hundred times better after.

3gs 16 gb:
3g on
wifi on
push on
fetch every 15 minutes
ipod playing all day, web around 30 minutes used, around 7 texts and 20 minutes of phone.

I work in a basement where it searches for service constantly which can be a huge drain.

I am going to do this again tomorrow without any plug ins. I did happen to plug my phone in for like 5 minutes or so, not sure how much that would do for it, but I would like to get a clean one just to see.

Brightness to less than 1/3, no extra settings on, and just a bit of everything: iPod via Car Stereo, games, web browsing, mail, some maps (no GPS).
