correct...and if you have AT&T with a non-iPhone...the apple employee will have the customer call 611 and talk with AT&T to see if they are eligible for the subsidized price...since AT&T is really paying for that price. If AT&T denies your account for a new iPhone Apple can't do anything about it.

1. Will 611 be even available with the number of calls it will get that day.

2. so customer will call 611 while in line and have Apple employee talk with 611. If 611 says OK, then you're golden or else fork over the extra 100/200 buck.

So since I have only cash right now, I guess I need to go run and get a Visa Gift Card and fill it with $199+my state's tax?

No you can use a giftcard....and BTcutter...Yes that is what will happen. P-S-3 is correct in everything he said...I don't know how Apple and AT&T are going to handle the people that don't qualify for the discounted price but it is true that Apple won't be selling a 399 and 499 phone in the store unless some other news come sup within the next 3 days...

if only the data rates didn't go up, i'd be getting one at launch. but i guess i'll wait and see how everything pans out before i get one, if i even do get one

well, I already decided long ago that I'm going to pick one of these up on the 11th... the real question I have is: anyone have any good information about camping? I'm planning to go to my local AT&T store at 96th and Broadway in NYC (figure I should avoid the 5th ave Apple store), and I'm not sure how crazy other people will be able camping out. Only other thing I have ever camped for is buying a Wii back in the days when they were impossible to find. I seem to remember a lot of info on the web with suggestions back then.

You should go camping in the Berkshires or Yosemite for a week. When you get back, walk into an ATT or Apple store a simply buy your new iPhone.

Ok, where is your source of information?

haha aw man, that sounds exactly like what my girlfriend has been telling me. Well besides camping info I'll toss out my convoluted account situation and see if anyone has a suggestion:

I have AT&T with a non local number (# from IL and I'm in NY) and I have been out of contract for a few years (I always managed to find phones without using AT&T subsidized upgrades) but the account is currently in my fathers name. I want to try to keep my number, but sign a contract in my own name while getting the iphone. Anyone know how to work that magic?

I have talked to a few different AT&T reps and they have all had something different to say. Worse comes to worse I'll just sign a new contract on Friday and give up my number if I really have to.

you don't have to believe me...but I guess you'll see in the next couple days...

I guess I will, sorry for being so skeptical and I am not trying to be confrontational, but it doesn't seem like that difficult of an issue to be handled by the Apple store. If they can handle the activation/upgrade fees then surely they can handle a 100/200 addition to that price. However, it would be nice to hear something concrete seeing how we are less than 4 days away from launch.

Here is a question I have not seen. If you upgrade your iphone I know you commit to a new 2 year contract. Does that mean they run another credit check on you? I know I have taken a ding this past year on my credit and afraid I might not pass the check this time around. Does anyone know how that works?

is it confirmed that if you're a gen 1 iphone user, that a credit check will NOT be required? I want to make sure i dont have to visit my att store prior to launch on friday

No, if you are a current AT&T subscriber, whether you have an iPhone or not, and your account is ACTIVE..

A Credit Check is NOT RUN... Credit Check is only run for NEW Customers, or if you're adding a line of service...

If you don't have an iPhone, the only question is, are you upgrade eligible..

Be very careful about porting early. I did this in late June and now they are completely confused about my account (I am within 30 days as new customer so I should be eligible). 611 customer care keeps says I am fine but local store hasn't a clue how to do it. I would talk to the ATT store that you are planning to get the iPhone from before doing this.

...sorry, i'm a little confused. when i went into AT&T to sign up for service the guy asked if I wanted to port my number now or wait until I get the iPhone. i told him I would wait because I don't have an AT&T handset yet.

what would be the difference between porting last week (when I signed up for service) versus porting on Thursday evening after work?

what exactly do you mean when you say "the local store hasn't a clue how to do it"?

Update: We've heard conflicting tidbits about existing AT&T non-iPhone customers. To avoid confusion and delays, existing AT&T customers who do not currently own an iPhone should probably go an AT&T store (not an Apple Retail Store) on launch day to upgrade to the iPhone 3G. We'll post more updates as we hear them.

if you port your number over now, how will you use your phone? usually when you port over a number, your account will show that you are NOT eligible for upgrade for 2 yrs so you'll be stuck. That's why it's paramount that YOUR ATT STORE says it's ok. Or else you will run into a massive confusion because your account will show that you are not eligible for a new phone till 2010.

Arn:
Is it possible that some Apple stores will do it one way and others will do it another or will it be a corporate wide protocol?

Thanks.

If you have a first Gen iPhone is it possible to have someone else pick up the new 3G for you? What verification do you think they would need?

You'd have to add that person as an "Authorized User" either by contacting AT&T or doing it via their website under "Add Authorized User"...

Pheeeww...Thats a relief..Great News!

i'm not really worried about the eligibility factor. i've never had a phone on AT&T so I'm not upgrading to anything. the iPhone will be my first phone. The rep gave me a copy of my contract with my AT&T number (which will change when I port my T-mobile number over) and he also gave me my SIM chip. I explained to him exactly what I planned to do and he didn't say it would be a problem.

I'm assuming that when you ported your number to AT&T in late June you got an AT&T phone and then plan to upgrade to the iPhone (which shouldn't be a problem as you're still in the 30 day window. I never got an AT&T phone and plan to port my number over on Thursday evening. I'll miss some calls because I won't have a handset until Friday morning (but as I mentioned earlier, no one calls me anyway).

Pre-Paid / Pay as you Go number

One detail I'm trying to get confirmation on is the fate of the current AT&T non-iPhone users. Those people need to qualify for upgrade eligibility and may need to go to AT&T stores to get an iPhone 3G.

arn

I still can't wrap my brain around it either. I am a wireless pre-paid AT&T customer (pay as you go). The local At&T store tells me that I will pay an extra $200 over the $199 price ($399 for 8gb) to port my pay as you go number to the iPhone. Of course this was my number one question of AT&T when I bought the pay as you go phone...they didn't say it would cost $200 dollars.

The guy at the At&T store said AT&T considers their pay as you go customers 'contract customers' which, we aren't by definition in my mind. Even if I am a contract customer i've never had a phone subsidized so i figure that I am due an "upgrade" anyway if they insist on considering me a contract customer.
