cos they would look almost identical to the current 1G iPhone? ;)

And the fact that you may see the front-facing camera through the casing and why the demo iPhones were delivered to Stores with the security cord attached to the back and front (just where a nice front-facing camera will be) ;)

So not only does it look cheap and plasticky, but it doesn't come with a dock either?

Cost cutting here... corner cutting there... reductions in quality everywhere...

Says a lot about Apple these days really. Of course, they're safe in the knowledge that due to hype people will snap them up regardless, but I wonder how long they can keep this up before people start voting with their wallets. It's a shame to see Apple sell out their quality and "give you everything you need" reputation for the sake of catering to the bargain hunter mainstream. Let them have their PCs and Nokias FFS

Back to plastic iPods and Macs next? Don't forget to BYOKDM (or buy Apple's at some extortionate accessory tax)...

Look at those fingerprints!

That was my first reaction as well. Likely everyone with a black model will purchase a protective cover. Accessories appear to favor a white iPhone - which will also minimize fingerprints.

kind of off-topic, but does a midnight release in NZ, corresponding to 8a EST time July 10th, mean that software 2.0 will be available a day before the US 3G launch? or do you think that apple wont release the new software for download until the entire world has had its launch? at the very least, we know itunes 7.7 will be out by then right. unless apple doesnt care for New Zealanders to sync their new iphones :p

maybe he purposefully schlocked it up with finger prints (he had butterfingers before hand and used this as a napkin)...

The reason for the smudges is obvious. The clandestine box disassembly took place in a bathroom stall. As usual, the former food-service employee didn't wash his hands. ;)

I like the new features but the new phone looks really cheap. I am sorry but they should have stuck with the current look for the phone. But who knows, when I can afford a new iPhone it might grow on me.

I still can't wait to get one of my own: the 3G data will definitely be an upgrade over the EDGE I have been using for the past year or so.

there's really no need to get so repulsed by smudges. how often do you sit there and stare at the back of your phone. half of the time the screen is facing you, and the other half it's pressed up against your face. oh, and if any of you out there care to respond that other people are gonna see the smudges, then you can probably clean them off with your tears  ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A345 Safari/525.20)

Being honest I'm not even going to bother with this generation. At&t screwed this one over being so complex and the new unit itself, dare I say it.. Is UGLY!!! I'm sticking with good ol aluminum. :D

Damn, that's a lot of fingerprints. Hopefully by the next update Rogers will have gotten there act together.

Here's the white iPhone I want:

WhiteiPhone.jpg

YES - now THAT is an iPhone. I love my snow white Apple products and their sexy hotness. ;) Black doesn't work for me, the crisp clean white plastic does though.

My friend got a great laugh and an in-my-face moment when the white iPhone was unveiled and the face was still black.

That look can be achieved with the white SwitchEasy Capsule that I have. It would simply have to be jailbroken and all you would need to do is edit a screenshot to allow a plain empty dock and a white background as opposed to the black.

Anyone want to take on that mission?!

I'm just waiting for the next iPhone after this one...Hopefully it will have some more features that will be better instead of just 3G and GPS. Seems like it is just an intermediary update, for something bigger later.

Gasp!

I too  at the fingerprints on the back of the JUST OPENED iPhone.... And my white MB is dirty after less than a year of use, and it doesn't go EVERYWHERE with me. Glad my iPhone is aluminum, doesn't have 3G or GPS though. Looks like accessory cases are the way to go. They had to cut corners to bring the price down to that level, sad in a way though.

Anyone near the iPhone 3G display check to see what the firmware build was? :)

The iPhone had an error message saying (in german) that it didn't have any sim card in. You could only unlock it to access the emergency keyboard. No way to know the firmware version. (besides it's obviously the 2.0, shipping the new iphone with the old firmware would be a complete non sens)

As for the cables in the back AND front, it is how these guy usualy secure the phones who'se battery can come off. I guess they didn't quite realise that changing the iPhone battery still isn't an option...

For the "dirt" in the back, even though it was available for anyone to touch, it's wasn't obviously smudged, unlike the first nano.

cheers

I was looking at pics on the apple website and the white iphone looks more distinct and rare in a sense. Also, most people will get the black one and the white one will attract more of an eye. The white one will not only hide scratches, but the contrast from the white back to the black front is appealing, when compared to the black one. However, the white apple sign on the black back is very attractive. I will be going with white please and thank you.

ps. I have orientation on friday at NYU, and plan to take a walk to the ATT store on broadway around 3, am i just asking to wait in line forever? Unless i sneak out at go at 8am...

edit: I have a clear cover for the screen of my current iPhone.. any idea as to whether this will fit on the 3g?

Not to single this one post out, but I get tired of hearing the same crap.

1. The 3G is not really any cheaper to produce - the cost we pay now is being subsidized by at&t. Do you really think they saved $200 per phone by switching to plastic vs. aluminum? Come on now.

2. The plastic back was done to improve reception, and as much as I love my iPhone, the reception was flaky compared to friend's Blackberries here in CT. Sometimes you gotta give to get and if it means my reception is more "consistent" you go ahead and put me down for a 16GB white PLASTIC model gladly! :)

it's possible that it's both subsidised and cheaper to produce.

2. The plastic back was done to improve reception

do you know that for a fact?
