Then why do some people get eligibility in July, when they signed the very same two-year contract I did. This is the question no one seems to be able to answer.

because the primary line on business accounts can upgrade earlier in some cases depending on the company getting the discount

good luck finding this good of an explanation on ATTs website, but here is the answer i think most of you have been looking for.

http://www.wirefly.com/upgrades/eligibility/att/

Note that AT&T upgrade eligibility may be further limited based on customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade eligibility is solely determined by AT&T Mobility at its discretion.

This is the part that we're complaining about. They seem to be using their discretion completely randomly.

You guys complaining that they can't upgrade this time around are going to be SOOO happy you don't lock in to another 2 years, because Apple will most assuredly release their next iPhone iteration when they leave AT&T exclusivity.

You'll have tons of choices next year, while those of us getting the 3GS will be complaining.

Just hang out another year. I have an original iPhone and waited an extra year. It's not that big a deal.

Truth.

My bill is $83. I can upgrade 12/11/09. This is the point people are making. All this is totally arbitrary.

Are you sure you know what arbitrary means?

You bought 3G in July right?
You pay less than $100 a month right?

So lets do the equation:

So 07/08 add 18 months =bam you got a deal!! You should not be eligible for another month so be happy.

In terms of the contracts they probably charge you for one month in advance thus really you started the contract in June.

Good price. So cancel pay $105. Then sell the iphone 3G for $200-250 and use the $199 dollars to start a new contract with exact same data plan price with a lesser phone somewhere other than AT&T. sounds like a great plan.

Well actually, you can get upwards of 4-500 bucks for a 3G on ebay.

So 24 hours after the keynote we still have no conclusive answer why some users are able to upgrade 17 months later (Dec), and some are able to do it a year later (July). Pricing seems to be arbitrary, so is it possibly just an issue with AT&T?

I want to know why I have to wait until March, 2010 to upgrade my iPhone 3G, when I bought it last July on launch day, just like everyone else.

When you bought the iPhone 3G you signed a 2 year service contract. Your monthly bills offset the $500 discount you got on the phone. ATT is nice enough to let you out of your 2 year contract a couple months early (March 2010). You can upgrade, but they won't give you another subsidy until you have fulfilled your obligation on the first one.

Are you sure you know what it means? Arbitrary doesn't mean everyone gets screwed. It means it is seemingly random and without a logical system. So just because he got lucky doesn't mean it isn't arbitrary. It in fact proves that it is arbitrary.

dude, you don't get it. My uncle pays EXACTLY THE SAME and all other facts are identical, he gets to upgrade after 12 months, not me.

I read that and my update date does not conform to that page.

I am eligible to upgrade after 15 months.

I have the lowest phone package $45 plus the $30 iPhone package. I just recently added the lowest messaging package $5.

Others have paid more per month, been an AT&T customer longer, at bought their phones at the same time and have a 18 month upgrade window.

Not fair.

Read again guy, he did not get lucky he is exactly with AT&T policy!!!!!! 18 months from contract start.

Actually some (me) have to wait 20 months later. There is a huge range here and there is so far no good explanation other than legal boilerplate that says they can basically do whatever they want.

well actually my thoughts are that i sell my 3G now for $300 (as i did my 2G) and purchase the 3GS for $300 and then sell my 3GS for the price of the new one next year.

the only time i have paid for a phone was the 2G and besides contract updates i am out $0 dollars every year and keep getting the current phone.

i actually sold a phone i had prior to the 2G which paid for that. i don't think i have actually dished out new $'s for a phone in like 5 or 6 years :)

Lets put it in simple form so everyone can understand and quit crying.

When you bought the iPhone 3G you paid for a 1/3 of the phone and agreed to pay AT&T for the rest of the phone. That price does not change at all--It is $400.

So if you plan small monthly plan it takes you longer to pay it back---Say 20 months in some circumstances.

Now if you pay more than it takes less time to pay off the phone.

This is how it works everywhere people, not just AT&T.

The arbitrary dates are not arbitrary but very calculated by AT&T. They simple determine the exact day you are done paying for the iPhone 3G, thats it.

The main problem is there are many plans out there and no one is truly a like on these forums. Sorry thats just the truth. People come on a say I pay $400 dollars and I want a new phone!! Well ok lets punch it into if you have paid off your subsidized iPhone. Well I have a family plan with 8 phones and the main phone only costs $75 a month. Well all they care about is the main phone and that will take 20 months to pay of the phone.

What plan do you have that is $149 for you?
I honestly want to know people's plans.

AT&T Family plan with two lines with 1400 minutes and ipnone data plan, and text messaging, and . . . and . . . and . . .

Does this help you feel better? Do you feel superior now? You have been bagging on people who want questions to an illogical and inconsistent situation. So what's your story?

Please explain to us why some who pay $83 a month are eligible and some who pay well over $100 are not, when purchase date is the same?
