Has anyone changed the wallpaper of the home screen to just be plain black ? is the only way to do that is to dl a black background or is there a way to remove the pre installed image to uncover the black back round ?

Hello and greetings from Germany....

Perhaps somebody can help me - i have read in OS 4.0 Email get a "notification" so you can see a new email without unlock your phone....

Has somebody test this new feature....

my opinion

just wanted to add my opinion on the os 4 beta...

feels really 'snappier' as so many people already said. of course some glitches here and there (like the sms app), sometimes one of my contact images flashed up (as if someone was calling me) just for an instant... but all in all - FOR A BETA - does not bother me at all...

but still I am not sure what to think of the multitasking feature. (which is of course not yet working with 3rd party apps like radio streams...) ... as one user wrote before, he dislikes the idea that all apps are not being closed but just "hibernated" , so when you go back to them, they resume where they left off. ... I'm talking about any 'regular' app that is not like radio streaming or whatever else Apple will officially support.

example: go some sub-sub-sub menu in settings, then exit settings. done
say 2 weeks later you wanna change something in settings, you go to settings (from your home screen directly) and boom - you're back in that sub sub sub menu you were 2 weeks ago, so now you have to go back all the way to the main "settings" and go where you wanted to... see my point? Not so clever in this case... and NO, I don't wanna open the 'task manager' every time and close my settings app.

:) just my thoughts so far
cheers

I agree that there are clearly times when a saved state is a negative, but there are also times when a saved state is a big positive.

It can take a lot more time to get into a specific state, then get out of one. Getting back is just back back back etc. Getting into state with some apps requires tons of scrolling or typing etc. And imagine those cases when you're bouncing back and forth quickly between a few apps. Or when you're in the middle of an edit when the phone rings. (You often lose the edits you've just made, because you haven't yet hit save.) It's a big, big win in many cases.

My first windows mobile device never saved state and it drove me nuts. The apps on the iphone that do save state currently are much less irritating to me than the ones that don't. I for one am really happy about this feature in OS4.

Cheers
Pete

Surely you can take the moment to remove Settings or whatnot from the multitasking bar, yes? That should reset the state.

At least, from what I understand. I could be dead wrong.

I think Apps are aware when they have been restored.
So if a "perfect" state-restoration produces an undesirable behavior, then it should be possible to code a different behavior it.

well bugger me I did a new restore of beta 2 on my iPhone and instead of restoring from a backup that was originally off 3.1.3 I went with setup as new iPhone.

everything is working again, I finally have 3G connectivity with apps, wifi issues...gone, mms is back along with the mms on/off switch and more amusingly mail app now has the unified inbox

Smart playlists have been fixed in 4.0 Beta 1, one year later.

Does this mean that they will automatically update on the iPod if I:
* use "Last Played not in the last 2 weeks"
* play a song on the iPod
* it is automatically removed from the smart playlist on the iPod?

This last worked in version 2.1.2, and never again since then.

I found setting my iPhone up as a new iPhone and not from backup solved the camera issue.

I think using a 3.1 backup with 4.0 just doesn't blend well together, I had wifi/3g connection issues, camera freezing up, photo app freezing..... all went away when I set up as a new phone in iTunes after a fresh restore

Weird. When i loaded beta two i loaded it up as a new phone. Didn't load a back up. Still gave me the camera issues tho.

Yes, I believe in the case of Settings (and perhaps some other similar apps) that there should be a time limit to the saved state, perhaps a user-configurable one.

My impressions so far have been good. A bit buggy but can you expect any better from the second beta? I want my fligafriggin home screen wallpapers though, I am sad that I can't use them yet. Let's hope that Beta 3 fixes that.
For those who have a copy but are holding off the upgrade, go ahead. The water's fine. It will only get better.
