I installed the beta on my 3G. I was surprised on how stable it was, every thing seemed like it was working (even with final updates I had some issues).

The folders system is quite awesome. It is fast, and works great. The only issue I had was trying to get an app in the folder some times. But I think that was more my fault then the OS. (When I put an app on the icon, the folder jsut moves as if I was trying to put the app in its place. I think it is because I didn't position the app on top just right).

I was surprised to see that the 3G version didn't get a wallpaper.

Overall I was quite impressed, the phone felt faster (psychological effect?) and the folders behaved better than I could expect (sooooo much better than Categories app from the jailbreak scene)

Shortly after I jailbroke it, and installed openSSH.
I then modified a plist so I could have wallpapers on the springboard, and even enabled multitasking.
Both work on the 3G.... BUT.......
To those asking why the 3G doesn't get multi tasking, it is because it REALLY CANT handle it. My phone slowed down quite a bit. The only multi tasking apps are apples, and I usually close every thing else from the multitasking bar. Only thing I leave open is settings app.
The phone is usable, but noticeably slower. I can only imagine that when having 3rd party apps using multitasking will slow it down much much more.

I kept multitasking enabled, I can live with a little lag. I really want to play with it properly once some apps start using it. See how much more it slows down.

It is a "little" glitchy, but other than that perfectly fine for day to day use in my opinion. I'm lovin' it :D

Edit: A few apps don't work properly, e.g.: Air Video - unfortunately now live conversion of remote videos right now under OS. 4.0 beta. They are looking into it "but it's not a trivial change".... =)

I am seeing a repeated problem on my 3G.

The phone continues to run fine. No crashes or slow downs. But...

The first symptom is the WiFi connected icon goes. The phone only shows cellular data. Even though WiFi is available.

The second symptom is a complete refusal to shut down. Holding down the lock button for 5 or 10 seconds has no effect.

A proper reset clears the problem.
Seen this three times now.

To me, it's a lame and pathetic update. And it underscores how far Apple has fallen behind in the smartphone race. There is nothing Apple is giving us that we have not already had in jailbroken phones. Plus OS 4 still cannot let you reply to an email or MMS message from the lockscreen, nor can it display your appointments for the day, the weather, your todo's and other notifications like you can do with a jailbroken phone or any other non Apple iphone.

If you want to see a really impressive OS take a look at Mobile Shell for the WM phones or Sense for the HTC phones. They make the iPhone look like a rotary phone. For me I have no intentions of downgrading my phone to OS 4 when it comes out. And I'll probably dump the iPhone when my contract is up unless the iPhone has somehow managed to get back in the game by then (a year from now), which I seriously doubt. I'm old enough to have watched Steve Jobs piss away the lead he had on his competitors with the Apple II and later the Mac by not keeping up with innovations and he's doing the same thing with the iPhone.

Is the slowing down was caused by wallpaper background rather than multitasking? Could you please try to disable the wallpaper and see whether the multitasking of a simple thing like that really impacted the performance? Thanks

Sure, I will post back later with the results.

Disabled wallpapers. Phone was quite a bit faster!
But, then it crashed and I can't get it on again. Soo thats all I can report back for now ;)

Well I guess that gives me something to hope for in OS 5. Maybe Apple's iPad profits will allow them to hire a development team capable of tackling this daunting interface challenge.

Surely you can use one of the many apps in the AppStore that have that functionality, right? I find evernote to be particularly amazing, especially considering it's over the air syncing.

Well, I got the phone back on. Muti tasking does not seem to work with out the wallpaper.
As soon as I exit the app (tried settings, and messages so far) it just goes to a black screen and freezes the phone.
So, yes multi tasking on a 3G is faster with out a walpaper... But don't expect to get back to the springboard.
and takes a few tries for the phone to boot back up.

I enabled the wallpaper back on and every thing works again (slow, but working).

Same thing happened to me. Though so far I have about 12 apps in the "dock" and there hasn't been any issues.

Oh another note, I found this interesting when I exited out of the Google Mobile app:

The red bar goes away after a second, however.

NeshyD.

Hi VPrime, thanks for testing.. I felt bad for causing your iPhone to be hang like that... I hope it's OK now..

This is exactly what I suspected, the graphic card in 3G just too slow to handle any more graphical related demand.. Too bad the multitask can't work without the wallpaper, which is a bit weird since they are both should work independently... I hope someone can get it work without the wallpaper slowing down though..

I have been getting a lot of errors saying that the phone is out of memory (3G). I don't think it is the OS I think it may be the applications trying to allocate large chunks of memory. I think I have enough free memory but not enough contiguous memory; and too many apps just assume they can allocate as much as they want without checking, or if they do check, it is just for total free memory.

Because there's no lock screen interface it's crap? Sorry but every aspect of the iPhone is polished and feels amazing. I've tried friends phones, driod, htc phones, palm pre ect. They are all "trying" to simulate the iPhone feel and experience and fall flat. It's sluggish not responsive and doesn't work the way you think it should. I think most people would agree who've compared.

Wow those icons look a LOT nicer and clean than I originally thought. You couldn't really tell that much with the raindrops wallpaper but you can see it big time with that one.

You were around for the Apple II days? I guess this post is proof positive that wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.

Pro tip :

No one really cares what you decide to make phone calls on and if you're going to rant and rave and call something lame or pathetic try supporting your hyperbole with some actual data.

4.0 is really good. I have had some apps lose their connection to the internet. Apps that go to servers for information have not been working. the develoopers will fix them.

The beta is stable, only a few apps not working, i'm very pleased with it.
I hasd some issues with install when my iuid was verified, but now everything is ok.
Another detail, you can watch youtube in portrait mode as you can see here, altough it's not a big deal, a little detail hehehe

I seem to be having some weird issues now.
Only apple apps work. Every 3rd party app I launch goes to a black screen. If I press the home button, I get the top bar with the time back but nothing else. Have to reset the phone to get the spring board back.
All of apples apps work fine, even cydia works.
Any one else have this issue?

Yes, I have those issues too.
I consider the OS still too rough around the edges for daily use.

Anybody know if one can sort notes alphabetically in OS 4.0? Sadly this is far more important to me than multitasking, wallpaper or folders...

It would just be nice to see Apple respond to scores of user requests, make an easy enhancement, and quadruple the usefulness of a core app. This one should have been taken care of when Outlook and Mail notes started syncing. Most of the other core PIM apps have evolved with each OS upgrade.. Evernote may be a great product - I would rather not share my data with yet another 3rd party cloud service - I'm sure many corporate IT departments feel this way as well.
