Which I can agree with it.

But the overall scheme of things, it does end up being a comparison between sales of OS vs OS.

This is similar to Windows PC with the multiple manufacturers vs the smaller line of Macs all over again.
Nobody talks about the highest selling OEM for Windows, do they? It that was the case, HP and Dell lead the way. Depends on perspective.

Based on a singular device, iPhone 4 wins hands-down. Based on mobile OSes, different story. I am still a little ticked that webOS failed. It is a superior OS to Android, IMO.

It somehow always comes down to OS vs. OS. My post was merely about this article and this article alone, however.

This really does not mean much.

If people want an iOS phone they have exactly two options; the 3GS and the iPhone 4. If someone wants an android phone they will have over twenty options.

So you are basically dividing the total number of people interested on iOS by two while dividing those interested on Android by over twenty.

How dare you use common sense when in doesn't put Apple in a favorable light?

The fact that the 3GS outsells all those super-charged devices is amazing, yes, but not surprising when you examine people's actual needs and their decision making process.

It is priced differently. Lower cost products typically sell in higher numbers. Lower price -> higher demand. Econ 101.

Over last 10 months Apple has finally moved the 3GS down into the zone it should be at for two year old tech. In another year or two, the "more affordable" iPhone should take over the front running position in units from the bleeding edge phone. The fact it is under the bleeding edge phone now is more a pointer flaws in its design/production than in what should be the case.

I usually don't equate popularity = best.

If that was the case, The Spice Girls are better artists than Black Sabbath or Nirvana for selling more records. Lady GaGa or Justin Bieber, anyone? I prefer my Sony PSP more than my Nintendo DS just because it can play more emus. I tend to have alot of different gadgets, so I really don't care who wins in sales. What works for me, works for me. Sometimes even the more obscure mobile OSes (like QNX and webOS) are better than the more popular ones like iOS and Android.

But I am very happy to see iPhones sell well. Apple worked their butts off during the last decade considering they were a dying company in 1997. User-friendliness has been in Apple's DNA for a long time since the early Macs. If Macs were sold similar to iPhones or iPads and be under $500, it would do so much better. As nice and popular as Windows 7 is, Mac OS X (Lion) is still much nicer. iOS is more affordable to make Apple more popular with the masses, but Apple's brilliance with a GUI really started from the Mac.

the Galaxy S2 is being released in the US around August/Sept (or later). This report is for the quarter ending June 11.

Also when the S2 does come out in the US, it will probably come in different variants.

Less individual model choice of a popular platform = more unit sales per device with improving marketshare.
More varying unit choice of a second popular platform = Lesser sales of each model but with the benefit of improving marketshare.

Both Android and iOS are doing fine in the U.S it seems. WP7 sitting idle still, will Mango help?

Apple is not only the best (and popular) smartphone manufacturer (IMO), I really do think they are the best computer manufacturer in the world.

But why aren't Macs as popular like iOS devices? Pricing and Microsoft Windows already won the desktop OS war years ago.

Android is going to be the new Windows but for mobile devices. It might be inferior to iOS just like I think Windows 7 is inferior to Mac OS X, but it will sell just like how Windows PC's were sold. Different price points. To win volumes sales, it always comes down more about price than the actual quality. This is why popularity doesn't always equal best. iPhone sales is one of the rare times that Apple is the best and most popular at something.

This has nothing to do with the platform! Why people are buying certain phones is pure speculation. The article only states that the iPhone 4 is selling more than any other single phone, including the 3GS.

Enough.

OMG. Please stop with the 2 iOS vs 20+ Android devices. The NPD data is simple. No matter how you spin it to make your chosen platform look good, the fact is: More people chose the iPhone 4 and 3GS over all other phones out there. Those people had a choice. They looked at all other phones and chose the iPhone over all others. Regardless of circumstances, carriers, nerd-status, tech-savvy-ness, etc. Nobody buys phones combined. They buy the one phone (or two, depending on family requirements). The fact that the Android OS is on a million phones is irrelevant. In essence, people got up, went to the phone store, looked at the millions of Android choices, and said no, I want an iPhone. The reasons why they did this is a matter for another discussion (ignorance, Apple marketing, sheep-ness, whatever haters want to call it). That is impressive, that when faced with "millions" of choices, they still went iPhone. I don't know enough about Android devices to call them good or bad. But come on, sales. This is not opinion. Today, people choose the iPhone over any other phone, regardless of what OS it runs. End of story. Good job, Apple.

The iphone 4 is still the best smartphone on the market so not shocking.

The iPhone 4 should definitely make it into the smartphone hall of fame if one existed

facepalm

I expected to see the iPhone 4 performing so well, but the not the 3GS, that is plenty impressive considering these phones are pretty outdated compared to some of these newer releases. These are some rock solid devices :D

If you're going to make that argument, then you need to compare the phones by maker. You can't count all phones sold by HTC, Samsung, Motorola and half-a-dozen other Android sellers and then say that's a fair way to discuss. I can see a one-to-one ratio on the basis of phone makers, but comparing sales of all Android phones versus the two Apple makes is meaningless. Again, if you're comparing platforms, then the iPad and iPod Touch need to be included. Otherwise, it seems you're intentionally knee-capping Apple.

this is such a stupid cliche btw i wouldnt even know who he is if it wasnt for that cliche

I'm aware of that. It was a joke.

Except if we start talking about OS (Android vs iOS) then you have take into account the little and huge brothers of the iOS family... iPod Touch and iPads.

20% difference compared to iPods and iPads where android hasn't comparable products (or comparable products that sale)

But but people don't like having too many choices. They get too confused. It is better for one man to decide what is best for them. If the screen is 3.5, they will say it's perfect. If he changes it to 4.5, they will say it's perfect. If he changes nothing and renames it iPhone 5, they will say it's the best thing ever.

******* that argument. As a consumer, I have umpteen zillion choices. I CHOOSE iPhone. Not because I'm too stupid to figure out how to use something else, or because someone told me I don't need anything else. I choose it because it is what I want.
