I realize the tests are for 3G, but since the iPhone 4 has WiFi "n" I would imagine faster speeds in general for it.

Even connecting to G it's faster than the 3GS. With the iPhone 4 N or G I get about 8 - 10 Mbps. On my 3GS on G I get about 4 Mbps.

Good here too.

Yes, if you are on in a marginal area far away from the nearest tower and you hold it in your left hand from the bottom of the phone against the palm instead of your thumb, you will get diminished signal. If you hold it a little higher and against your thumb instead or in your right hand, you will have no problems.
Most people will not have any problems making a phone call assuming that they don't have a caveman grip on it and instead hold it like you would other phones when making a phone call.

Why does everyone test iPhone 3G against the new iPhone 4? Shouldn't it be iPhone 3GS vs iPhone 4? Of course there will be dramatic differences between the two, but comparing it with the 3GS would most likely not show a major change.

well....many (like me) are just now getting out of their 3g contrats and happen to have both (a 3g and ip4) right by me

yes, see my comparison here

lol @ my upload being faster on 3G then Wifi Cable :|

The upload speeds over there look pretty awful to be honest. Speedtest here c/o VodafoneUK (who I don't usually heap a lot of praise on).

As a iphone4 owner that doesn't have any issue, no matter how hard I grip my iphone, I call you on "obvious misrepresentation of the obvious facts". To me, its the "facts" that the antenna doesn't work properly that are unproven.

Also, how is this story, about 3G download speed, not connected with any antenna thread? So if you're talking about the speed of a car, you're not talking about its engine, transmission, etc?

Because the increased in speed is caused by the HSDA 7.2 Mbit/s standard and the HSUPA chip that wasn't in the previous models.

The loss of signal strength seems to be caused by the design of the antennas, a software issue, or a bad batch, so the articles are completely unrelated

Surprisingly Fast

I guess I must live in the one good reception zone AT&T has because it gave me surprisingly quick results for being at my house.. :D

Where are you in UK? I dont even get that upload on WiFi on my iPhone 3G!

Hey there I'm in McMinnville..34 miles or so away from the Portland Server and this is what I'm getting downstairs without ever hitting full 3G bars. Upstairs and outside I get 5 bars. But Im in a weird vortex thing I swear I go from full bars to 1 bar constantly...and this is with every iphone in our family. My old 3G, Sisters 3G, Moms 3G, and My dads 3GS. Now that me and my dad have upgraded to iPhone 4 we notice significantly better call quality and stability up here even though the signal still does the same dipping as with previous iPhones. Also worth noting all these test shots are with a Bumper case installed. I am one of the iphones that shows reception change as soon as the antennas are bridged. I will be testing bare skin on naked phone later tonight...sounds so dirty.
Also included WiFi when my signal magically dropped like I mentioned above for comparison..

thanks Bro!

with my 3G at home it's pretty awful. I got a text from ATT saying it will improve in 60-90 days due to their upgrade. We'll see.

I get similar upload speeds as the 'op'

Back to back with iPad 3G, the iPad is at 250-300 and the iPhone 4 at 1100-1400.

3.0 down / 1.2 up with the phone laying on the countertop.

All my bars dropped and the test never completed when I held it in my hand. And I'm one of the people that never saw the dropping bars issue before. Apparently when I hold it just right......argh.

Colorado (via WiFi): 4904 Down/ 3002 Up with 83ms ping.

Curious, my broadband tests at 20Mbps down and 5Mbps up, and I have 802.11n. So, that implies the iPhone limits speeds. Not an issue with signal as I have full WiFi signal when testing...

northern ky, cincinnati server, four tests, five bars:

down: 2555 to 3514
up: 1187 to 1692

Most interestingly, notice how that compares to my wi-fi speeds, tests run at same location 20' from my router. Using Insight ISP.

I'm seeing the same results. I ran 3 tests on WiFi and 3G for both the iPhone4 and iPhone 3GS. I was in the exact same spot in the house for all tests. My tests also show that 3G speeds have dramatically increased. Interestingly my WiFi speeds were a bit slower.

iPhone 4 - Average
wifi - 6040 / 1952
3g - 3897 / 1647

3G - Average
wifi - 7576 / 2525
3g - 2155 / 175
