Double the ram, Retina display, HD video recording... Still won't make up for the ball and chain that is AT&T. Useless data plans with data caps that make streaming impossible. Still no wireless hotspot or tethering that will be useful due low data caps and a 3G network that fails to meet demand. Not to even touch on the dropped calls or lack of 3G coverage.

Great news for Apple and their hardware but not enough to stay on ATT. Hopefully the make a move to another carrier soon. iPhone 4 will sell record numbers just as the pre order records indicate but the network ties make it a useless piece of hardware for me. AT&T is simply too pathetic of a network to justify staying and buying the new iPhone.

that behavior is a software issue for Safari, it has nothing to do with the iPad memory. Go get any of the alternative browsers for iphone/ipad and you will not have this problem again.

that's what i said, the iOS4 will fix this bad behavior.

by the way, i use atomic browser and it's great.

Yeah for 512mb

Yes!!! I hope it is 512mb so I can keep for 2 years without updating the phone. If it is 512mb, I 'might' buy the imovie app to support it hahaha.

Lucky for Apple they have the rest of the world to sell to while AT&T get themselves sorted out.

More companies should emulate Apple and, you know, give people more than what they were expecting. Rather than trying to charge the most amount of money for the least amount of product.

The success of the iPad as a new product, and the new technology infused in the new iPhone, indicates that Apple is going to go all out with the next gen iPad. I would expect to see the next iPad have at least everything the new iPhone does and a whole lot more. Now that they know how well received the iPad has been.

The iPhone was born of R&D done for the iPad, so it goes without saying that the two products are going to build off of each other.

Once the iPad has retina display quality it will be hard to imagine how any of the existing e-book readers can survive, given the relatively small difference in price points.

Having a retina display the size of an iPad would drive the price of an iPad up an additional $1,000.

Who would buy a 16GB Wifi iPad starting at $1,500?

Good news, but still inadequate. I'm looking forward to real world results for 720p video, iMovie and FaceTime. Then we'll know for sure. Makes iPad look sad, though—can't run iMovie?? Glad I waited 'till next year…
You'll probably have to wait about three years until they really get it "right..."

Someone else said it in less words, I'm going to say it in a few more...what the heck is with Apple system and videoram?! 256mb of ram is short term thinking for such a forward thinking company. Obsolete appears to be built right in from the get go, the low ram narrows the margin by enough to make something obsolete in half or less time, or ASAP as another poster mentioned.

I'd have to assume that they knew iOS4 was going to multi-task and require more ram when they were still making the touch/phone with 256mb, and especially the iPad. That's is lame. So much for iMovie on the iPad, the iPad would have been perfect for such an application. Apple wants you to turn around and buy the 2nd gen iPad 7-8 months from now.

I stopped short of getting the iPad, because it's first gen, and like the first gen iPod Touch/Phone, they will be the first to not be supported by iOS#. I'm going to wait for the 2nd gen iPad. I'm no longer interested in anything 1rst gen from Apple.

Good god man! Do you not follow the tech. industry.... wait your on a tech forum..... even worse. This is how the industry works. Grow up. Why not wait ten years it should be really special by then.

Btw, For all the "ipad is now obselete" folks I would much rather hang out on my couch with my ipad then a iphone 4(which I am getting)with a teeny screen in comparison. Apple and Oranges imho.

Economies of scale bring the cost of new technology down. I wonder whether selling an expected 24 million iPhone 4's by the end of the year might help solve that problem?

So if I told you in 8 months Apple will release iPad 2.0 with 1 gb of ram would you be mad about your outdated iPad and iPhone 4.0? Do things ever change?

I don't understand the hype in the iPad, at all. What is it's purpose? <----That's a serious question by the way.

The iPad's purpose is to serve as a crippled less functional iPhone with a 9 inch screen. If Apple would just make a 4.5 inch iPhone (big enough to comfortably read ebooks, browse the web and watch movies on), the iPad would have little reason to exist.

Well done apple with the ram upgrade. :D

The iPhone 4 kicks ass. And I'm so happy AT&T was kind enough to let me upgrade to it months early.

Surely you do not expect me to beleive that. You either do not have a ipad or you are opening up craigslist text web pages. For those with ipads can tell you it happens daily and is not a rare occurrance or a fluke like you are trying to pass it off.

It depends on things like the web servers "no-cache" directives, and JavaScript -- especially the JavaScript around ads on the page. If you switch off a page with an ad that is scripted to reload if you've navigated "away" the page will reload to grab a new add / register a new impression. It doesn't matter if you had 10 gigabytes of RAM, it will still reload for the extra ka-ching$ the new ad brings. Similarly, pages with dynamic content like # of diggs, ratings, etc, will typically have no-cache directives set and force refresh.

Depending on what types of sites you visit, you will see different behaviors.

I visit a lot of open source, documentation, non-commercial sites without lots of social media and advertising kruft and rarely if ever see the reloading issue. In fact for a couple weeks, I thought people were lying about it happening as I never saw it.

If they made a larger iPod touch, say with a 4.5 or 5 inch screen, the iPad wouldn't exist. The smaller screen is really only good for quick lookups or 5 min games. Apple has fallen behind the droid in this regard and should have upgraded the screen size in the new iPhone.

Here's a serious answer ----> Apple has always been known to redefine the computing experience. Like adopting the computer mouse for a computer. Or combing the computer case and screen into one (iMac).

With a PC (Personal Computer) or even a laptop your body has to remain quite formal, either by sitting down or laying in a 'fixed' position on the bed. You can't just just freely roll and lay on your back and use the ceiling as a horizon against your screen. Wouldn't work, wouldn't be comfortable. With the iPad you are free to completely relax and have access to the world by the touch of a finger in absolute comfort.

The other part of the serious answer is --->
It's like the original Mac 9inch screen a new way of interacting with information. All in one package and a world of possibilities, but it is just that a platform. It's all about what will developers do with it.

That said it's a very personnel, hands on, direct platform, I think that is a big part of what drives the hype. People getting in and driving demand like owning one of the first one will be something you tell the grand kids. Like the moon landing. It excites their imagination even if they aren't sure how they'll use it. I know I will buy one soon enough, I could imagine so many uses that will be very handy on a device like that.

Millions of ipad owners would disagree with you.Being a ipad owner myself I think your view is quite silly. These are two completely different products for different situations. Some people just don't get it I guess.

it's really that bad in Kansas city? it's fine in chicago and great in Minneapolis where I had the iPhone 3G for well over a year. I thought the Midwestern cities had it pretty good with AT&T. I love hearing all these complaints because I have never had poor service even when I've traveled.
