This is pleasantly surprising but somewhat mystifying in terms of the product lineup, unless there is an upgraded iPad on the way.

I doubt this does anything spectacular. iMovie for iPhone is useless anyway. The extra pixels already need more RAM (btw, does the GPU has its own GDDR or does it use the system RAM?) so it's not a surprise.

Few years ago Macs had 512MB, now iPhone has!:D

I feel pretty confident in predicting that the resale market for first gen iPads is going to be quite strong for the foreseeable future. You gotta figure that the second gen will feature a 32GB version for $500. So selling a 16GB first gen you've kept in great condition for $300-350 is well within the realm of possibility.

My plan: sell it shortly before the next iPad is announced for $300, consider $200 a very reasonable upgrade cost to get a shiny new device.

yes iPad 2 will be sweet. I held off on buying one this year because it just did not fill the gap between my iphone and my laptop. when the ipad works more like an actual computer I'll be a little more interested. everything the ipad does, the new iphone does too. just with a smaller yet higher quality display. the iphone 4 has a lot more features that are worth the money compared to ipad.

The display as others have pointed out in other threads wouldn't be financially feasible to put on an iPad. The RAM though is a bit lame and inexcusable.

I am thinking of holding off for the next rev to buy now. Although if the only thing that it limits is iMovie than I don't care that much.

You could always sell me your iPad 3G 64 for real cheap as it is now obsolete :)

iPad 2 will probably be great.... can't wait!

iMovie will come to iPad when the 2nd one comes out. More RAM, cameras, higher dpi screen, Face Time, etc. :)

You will see iLife go mobile on all the iOS devices, mark my words! :)

Watch the All Things D interview with Steve they just had. If you know how to watch him and interpret the things he says or doesn't say you get some good insights into what is going to happen!

wow...time to sell my ipad, phasing it out already.

yepp.. my iPad is going on sale after being replaced by the iPhone :D

j/k

But i will sell it a.s.a.p. when rumors about a new iPad getting strong and the new one is a month away or so.

Someone else said it in less words, I'm going to say it in a few more...what the heck is with Apple system and videoram?! 256mb of ram is short term thinking for such a forward thinking company. Obsolete appears to be built right in from the get go, the low ram narrows the margin by enough to make something obsolete in half or less time, or ASAP as another poster mentioned.

I'd have to assume that they knew iOS4 was going to multi-task and require more ram when they were still making the touch/phone with 256mb, and especially the iPad. That's is lame. So much for iMovie on the iPad, the iPad would have been perfect for such an application. Apple wants you to turn around and buy the 2nd gen iPad 7-8 months from now.

I stopped short of getting the iPad, because it's first gen, and like the first gen iPod Touch/Phone, they will be the first to not be supported by iOS#. I'm going to wait for the 2nd gen iPad. I'm no longer interested in anything 1rst gen from Apple.

It has a 1ghz ARM cortex A9 Multi-core processor with Apples seal of approval. Apple did not make the A4. ARM did and then Apple purchased ARM and called it an Apple processor. I'm sure Apple tweaked it a bit but ARM did all the work before the chip maker was acquired my Apple. The chip is technically 1.3ghz but has been clocked down by Apple to reduce heat and power consumption. Apple does this quite often with chips such as intel in imac, which are also all under clocked slightly.

april fools?

There are too many false statements in this to correct.

There is so much wrong information in this post that I don't know where to start

A) The A4 is still A8 single core based

B) Apple has not bought ARM. There are rumors of them buying ARM Holdings, but they are just that so far, rumors.

C) Apple did buy a company recently that had the A8 at 1 Ghz and that chip is the A4( name of the company has slipped my mind)

D) Really the Core i7 is downclocked in my 27" iMac? Speed says it is 2.8 Ghz which is the advertised speed from Intel on the specific model of the i7 used in the iMac.

WOW

1) iPad can't record video, so you're telling me that you'd sync movies to the iPad from your computer ... to edit them on your iPad? Sounds backwards to me

2) I would expect an updated iPad with a camera, bumped specs and a slightly altered design at the iTunes event this fall when Apple upgrades the iTouch.

No, but the iPad connection kit allows a USB plug from your camera. Apple could easily have allowed the USB to iPod/iPhone/iPad cable to plug into the iPad via the USB end and the other end at the iPhone and then you could transfer any photos and video from the iPhone directly to the iPad. Imagine traveling with both devices and no laptop.

With all this talk about iMovie, anyone know how much space each minute of HD video will take up? It would seem that even a 32gb phone would fill up quickly.

My Flip UltraHD has 8GB onboard storage, records H.264 and can shoot 120 minutes at 720p. So you're looking at about 7 hours ballpark on a mostly-empty 32GB iPhone, if the H.264 quality settings are comparable to the Flip.

Now Apple confirms that the iPhone indeed has 512mb of ram.

Seems to me the iPad got screwed , first the display is superior now we have half the ram too. All this with just a 2 month window of release. Seems to me there should have been some shared r&d over at Apple.

Anyone that said the iPad is just a big iPhone was wrong.....

The iPhone is much more advanced now , just 2 months latter ...

Does the iPhone 4 tech suddenly make your iPad stop working?

iPhone Color Matters.

Cool. Now if they can get us a time for when the white iPhone's will be available, I may be a happy customer.

In fact its the white one that has the 512mb -- if you get the black one you only get 256mb. :)

Assuming you were commenting on my post; if not my apologies. Yeah it's backward, but I think it would be nice to have that ability to "create" something on the iPad. I don't have much interest editing movies (crappy as mine would be) on my phone. If I could easily transfer files between the two devices....lovely, then I wouldn't have to sit at my Mac upstairs, I could edit from the couch or when I should be working. Of course Steve hasn't yet decided to make such things easy but hopefully things will change if they wish to add more functionality to the iPad.

Also, I think transferring video OFF the iPhone will be a common occurrence as I see 32gig filling up quickly with 720p video.

My Flip HD holds 2 hours and is 8 gigs. So, I think you can expect the 16gig iPhone 4 to hold 4 hours.
