Aside for the imovie app.....

So let me get this straight. ALL apps I see being updated in the app store are for iOS4 features. The ipad was announced and released within a few months of the offical iOS4 keynote (even though there has been rumors and previous mention of iOS4 in other keynotes). Plus they said iOS4 would be available for the ipad in the fall and we early adopters could get the next major upgrade for free.

Now you're telling me my ipad will not be able to take advantage of the features?? And what about the apps that are being updated for iOS4? will they no longer run? Most of these apps I paid for... All I gotta say is my ipad better be able to handle it, my apps better not break or Apple better give me an $800 credit (price of my original ipad, applecare, and state sales tax) toward a new one.

I specifically bought an ipad for it's features, apps, and the iOS4 features when they were released. Especially folders and the chance at multitasking.

:mad::confused::mad::eek::eek::mad::eek::mad::eek::mad::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::(:(:(:(

shervieux,

The iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPad will all get multitasking. It's the 2 yr old iPhone 3G that won't get multitasking with iOS4. Your iPad still has the 1GHz A4 chip. With 256MB of RAM, maybe the amount of apps that can run simultaneously will be lessened. But they'll run. Nice and fast.

I think you'll be ok. But, it would suck if Apple bumps the iPad hardware specs this year. Such is the luck of the early-adopter.

True kinda seems lame though. Although for us early adapters this is what we get. Processor wise they will be the same at least. I'm sure Apps like iMovie will take advantage of the 512 especially while doing other tasks. But will rendering a movie make the phone bog down?

Quite a bit of CPU power goes into exporting a movie on a Mac even.

No guarantees. Cortex A9 designs will start to hit next year.

You guys really didn't expect this? I KNEW the next iPhone would have way more features than the iPad - they INTENTIONALLY withhold features from devices so they can add them at a later date and sell more. This is Apple's modus-operandi, and has been for a very, VERY long time.

For those of you with iPads, has the 256 been a hinderance? Any slowdowns, etc? I'm thinking the use of flash memory will cancel out any negatives from less RAM, but who knows?

Ya know what? Now that I know the iPhone 4 has 512 megs of ram and the iPad only has 256, my iPad has gotten slower!! It's almost unusable!

Seriously, though... the iPad is fast I haven't once been worried about its speed.

I would like to point out that this is why you DON"T ever buy the fist release of anything from Apple! The next iPad will have 512 Ram and probably a camera.

Since the amount of RAM is not a very marketable feature (particularly among Apple's clientele) I doubt this explanation.

1) iPad can't record video, so you're telling me that you'd sync movies to the iPad from your computer ... to edit them on your iPad? Sounds backwards to me

The iPad doesn't take pictures either, but every commercial I see has someone looking at pictures on their iPad.

Many DSLRs also do video now, and the camera connection kit should allow you to bring over movies in addition to pictures.

If it is true then the useful lifetime of the iPad just got shortened quite a bit. If it already has much less ram then it's just a matter of time till the newest OS won't support it anymore.

Ah well, technology. It will be ok for two to three years. Then it's time to update anyway.

Everybody is going to want to upgrade to video capability next go round anyway, so look for all of the new 4G features excepting the phone capabilities, plus something to make a statement.

Question:

When would be the anniversary of the iPad? Are we looking at end of March of 2011 or is it possible that Apple will bump it up a month to give a bit more room for the next iPhone release?

So glad I didn't buy an iPad now, the next version should be awesome with its 512MB of RAM and Retina display and maybe SD card slot if I'm totally lucky.

It is just so typical of Apple to obsolete a new device with another one. I know one is a phone and the other is a tablet but they are so close in functionality, I would have had regretted it if I had purchase the iPad.

I don't understand why they didn't hold those 2 features and release the iPad closer to the iPhone 4 so both products were more in tune with one another. The display was already low res on the iPad, the iPhone upgrade further distances itself from it.

Again, so glad I put the money onto paying off my credit card.

This is pushing me over the edge to sell my iPad to my cousin when I get the iPhone 4. Love the iPad but I have a feeling it's not going to get much play time once the iPhone 4 arrives.

Well I'm happy for the 512 in my soon to be iPhone 4, but a bit disappointed that they shafted the iPad. I was wondering why iMovie wouldn't work on the iPhone 3GS, I would have figured the VGA video would have been easier to work with.

So, will the next iPad have like 1GB of RAM then? :D The iPad is nice, but I started having Safari crashing when loading long-page website (like Engadget's live blogging).

No, but the amount of RAM is a great excuse on why you have to buy the new version to get the new software features that Apple touts very loudly. I think Apple did the same with video and the 3GS, but people with jail broken 3G phones had been recording video for a long time?

With all this talk about iMovie, anyone know how much space each minute of HD video will take up? It would seem that even a 32gb phone would fill up quickly.

how much does vga take up on the ipod nano? is it similar to a flip?

Probably CPU power and total Memory. Video Editing takes its toll.

Why is everyone tripping on the iPad RAM?

The developers making the app for iPad will use iPad tech. For iPhone they'll use iPhone parts. I'm pretty sure the dev's can make so their app works on both platforms with ease, possibly defaulting to the 256MB config since that's what 90%of the people will have anyway until iPhone 4's are in everyone's hands.

You people need to stop whining so damn much.

I've noticed this as well with pages that have a lot of images on them as well. Mail will eve crash too sometime when loading a lot of images in a single email.

Safari crashed on me yet again this morning with just three pre-loaded tabs and engadget backgrounded on the train. 256 is perfectly fine for streaming music but more intensive just isn't working.

I'm now officially sold on the new iPhone as soon as the white version's available. :) So thrilled they didn't hold back because of the iPad (and that I've held off for gen 2 so far!)

My iPad will be sold to my cousin once I get the iPhone 4. I think the iPad is great but can't stand having my middle device (quasi netbook) being less powerful then my phone. I'm going against my own advice that I gave another poster. :p

Color me surprised. :)

Hopefully this means that the next iPad will have 512MB of RAM. Guess I'll have to sell my 1st gen one. :D

Happy once...happy again.

For 2 years I chomped at the bit for an iPhone until I couldn't wait any longer and got a 32GB 3GS. Looking back at the 3G and 2G versions and knowing I can fully run iOS 4 I feel like my decision to wait has been validated.

Now I have the same feeling with the iPad, I'll want one but I'll wait 2 or 3 Revs and then take the plunge.

So many people won't upgrade their OS till it gets to 10.X.4+ which the feel adds some maturity and stability. I'm still an early adopter pre-ordering it and getting it on day 1.

However, on the hardware side for some reason it's a different story and I continue to be please with those decisions.

Over and out.
