Much like your comment... Obviously you don't have an iPad. I actually have both an iPad and iPhone, and I can say the things I want the iPad for the iPhone can never do, retina display or not. Looking forward to the 2nd gen iPad.

The Retina Display on the iPad will likely be a sight to behold.

My iPad's 256MB RAM and non-Retina Display make it seem ... ugh.
It works fine. New technology does not make old technology obsolete to a human being; the usefulness of that old technology does. I wish they'd tossed 512 into the iPad, though, as a day will likely come that it means the device will be left out of an upgrade cycle.

On mine, Safari crashed with just 1 tab open, Engadget's live-blogging on E3. :( And it happens consistently, never fails. I think Apple can/should push some fixes first while waiting for 4.0 for the iPad.

Odd, mine never crashes on that site. I mostly use the Atomic Web browser anyways.

Have you found the iPad to be slow? I have not. More is always good, but for me, the iPad rips.

Not slow but only being able to have a few open windows in Safari is a pain in the ass. Apple could solve this with a virtual memory system like every OS for over a decade has had but instead they just keep adding RAM. So yes the iPad needs more RAM and/or a virtual memory system to page safari windows out to disk so you don't have to reload every time you have more than a few open.

I'm sure Steve would have loved to get 512 in the iPad, but the bottom line won out. For $499, 256 was all she wrote. As early adopters we know it's futile to second-guess. Technology moves too fast. At launch, 256 was good. With a new product (iPhone), 256 seems too little. That's life.

Adopt early, and understand you are not getting the complete package, but you end up "growing" along with the hardware over time. Eventually it will be what you want/need. If you don't have the money/desire to play catch up, then wait until it does what you want.

256 or 512 ram doesn't matter to me. My iPad is fast for what i use it for ( and i don't see how it could be any faster )

Watching movies
Streaming movies
Sending Emails
Surfing the internet
Storing photos
taking notes
setting appts on iCal

Yeah the iPhone SPEC wise is faster BUT will you use it? Some will, Some wont...The 512 is to accommodate its other features ( video, camera, etc )

For instance...I never watch movies on my iPhone, The small screen makes it really pointless unless i am EXTREMELY bored...

I dont lay in bed or sit on the can and surf the net on my iPhone because once again, the screen is small and its not that enjoyable. I DO hop on the net if i am out or need to look up something really quick. My GO-TO device for surfing would be the iPad and if you prefer surfing on the iPhone rather then the iPad, then your seriously retarded....

Sending Emails i do on the iPhone, but the iPhone and its 512 ram will speed up emails how? It wont....Everything will be at the same pace as the iPad

Storing photos, The same as the iPad

Taking notes on the iPhone? Yeah, really QUICK notes that i can later update via my iPad.

Settings appts? yeah, When i am out and about...which later will sync to my iPad..

I dont know what some people use there iPad for but as stated, for what i do, My iPad is fast and adding another 256mb of ram will not improve anything for my needs.

Now the iPhone has options the iPad doesnt ( 720p video for example ) which that 512 ram will come in handy...

Some of you people expect way to much from the iPad, seriously..

For what it does, it does it well.

Yes I Have 64 3G iPad & Plan To Buy 128GB Retina Display iPad The Day It Ships

Much like your comment... Obviously you don't have an iPad. I actually have both an iPad and iPhone, and I can say the things I want the iPad for the iPhone can never do, retina display or not. Looking forward to the 2nd gen iPad.
Have top of the line iPad now and will be happy to buy the retina display iPad with max ram & 3G the day it ships. No problem. :D

Right now my problem is getting my WHITE 32GB iP4.

I figured that a new ipad is coming out in 11 months when I bought my 64GB 3G Ipad.

but do I care, no because I am getting lots of use out of it and it does what I need right now.

I was on some trips that made good use of the ipad.

Dude, 7 pages of "oh noes my iPad is obsolete..."
really this is why Apple didn't want to (or didn't care to) tell people how much ram is in the devices.

Granted more ram = better performance... but this is an EXTREMELY GENERALIZED statement. Performance really depends on the whole package, including software (OS and app), the development of better drivers/APIs, and the hardware (CPU and ram..... and its not even Clock speed).

for people to go insane over "oh noes my iPad have 1/2 the ram of my brand new iPhone which is 3 months newer than my Piece o' Trash Apple First Gen crap". really did it stop being cool cuz it isn't the newest product Apple released? my Macbook Pro Early 2008 is ancient then, but why did the new iTunes 9.2 show significant improvement over the older version? my computer has the same amount of ram in it... hmmm maybe the software Engineers actually improved the software so resource management is better now.

This is the same pattern I see in iOS4. indeed it is lacking multitasking on my 8Gb 3G now, but app launches are faster, safari loads are just a tad better. but overall I saw software improvements.

Talking about how much ram you have is just like the typical muscle car idiot that says his car has 600 horses (yeah, in an automatic transmission that goes nowhere). its just a number game people.... and most companies out there use it as a marketing tool....

My iMac Core Duo bought in summer of 2006 has a 1 Ghz processor and originally came with 512MB of RAM and a 25GB hard disk. My new phone next week will have roughly the same processing speed and memory , 12% of the storage (albeit in more efficient solid state form), higher screen pixel density, better LCD technology, newer, and higher speed versions of both Bluetooth and WiFi.

Pretty amazing what we're carrying around in our pockets these days. (That's what she said.)

The iPhone is more expensive than the iPad. Why should it not have better specs?

16GB 3G iPad is $679 here in Canada. If Apple uses there current exchange pricing scheme in Canada as they have on other products recently. We might get the unlocked 16GB iPhone 4 for $649.

I see what iPad people are complaining about because you might think the iPad would be ahead of the iPhone specs and not the other way around. Hahaha. I think they should really converge with specs but it could make one less attractive than the other then so we might have to deal with the iPad always being behind just like the Touch. The problem is that a September refresh would be a slap in the face of people that did just buy one considering it's been less than a year. I know I'm STILL waiting for my iPad to come in and if it's refreshed a month or 2 later then I'll definitely be a little hot about it especially since I shelled out $800 after tax (32GB 3G).

So now that we know iPhone 4 will have double the ram of the iPad...

Shouldn't we add the iPad in the "Buyers Guide" on MacRumors? Now that I know this about the iPhone, I definitely won't be buying a first gen iPad.

I mean, it seems obvious that a 2nd generation iPad will be a welcomed upgrade, but now 100% certain I will hold out until the next revision.

For what it does, it does it well.

Specifically, you'll notice the difference on the iPad when multitasking is introduced. That's where the extra RAM will come in very handy.

I can't wait

I can't wait for an iPad based on the iPhone 4. It is going to be amazing. Glass enclosure, great antenna, faster processor, more ram, better (hopefully much better) display. The iPhone 4 is unbelievable, it is so good it makes the iPad seems awful, and I am a big fan of the iPad.
