Its 30x stronger than plastic but also very very brittle (the stronger its made the more brittle), so it shatters.

Hmmm guess that means it will resist scratches more though..... I don't think we can win tbh, maybe a metal backed handset or some type of reenforced plastic back with a coating to stop scratches..... I just don't know

I hope by Christmas that a different type of glass is used because if my GF gets one at her upgrade date then its for sure going to end up just like that.

I am getting more worried all the time, I never drop my phone and I have a bumper. But what if in five months it happens to fall off of my coffee table onto the tile and it shatters. Then I am just out of luck?

Ifixit reported that the back is not gorrilla glass, just the front. Also the stated that replaceing the back only takes removing the two bottom screws and sliding it off. You should be able to buy a new back soon and install it yourself. Wont be long and there will be customs colored backs for sale im sure. id love a white one

I think he said it's not functioning fully, though. It's good to know about the replacement possibility, though.

When I get mine, it might be the first time I buy a separate warranty or insurance for a device. That is a serious bummer and I'm sure his wife feels bad about it.

I know accidents happen, etc and take no offense to this, but why do people treat their $200-$700 phones like they were a $20 plastic toy? I see it all the time. People shove their phones unprotected into their pockets and also put their keys, coins, and things that will scratch and damage them in the same pocket. Would you treat your computer the same way? My sister is like this. It seems like she breaks her phones every 6 months.

If you want to treat your phone like it is a $20 toy, then I suggest buying one those cheap dumbphones or you invest in a protective cases for your expensive smartphones.

As for me, my iPhones are in mint condition. The only thing protecting them is an iPod sock. There may be a hairline scratch here and there that are hardly noticeable, but I take care of my $200-$600 investment. The only time any of my iPhone was dropped was with my 3G when someone grabbed it out of my hands and he didn't have a grip on it and dropped it.

some people just want to try and be cool but dont understand that it takes alot of responsability to keep it safe

Wow, with all these threads popping up I'm disgusted and disappointed.

I think having the front and back glass with such a strong outer frame it isn't allowing any part of the phone to dissipate the engery and it cracks the glass. Clearly Gorilla glass is the weakest link and with all that marketing showing how flexible it is it does not show how it actually performs in real life. Slow constant pressure is much different than shock loading from different angles.

Probably going to skip the iP4 :(

I just assume that if I drop my expensive gadget, it's going to break. I don't buy gadgets based on durability really, at least durability for falling onto the ground. So I do my best not to drop it.

If you want a phone you can drop get one of those bulky Nextel phones, or a Fisher Price My First Cell phone.

Sorry about that phone dude, looks horrible. At least you have your wife to blame. ;)

they've developed a glass that's comparable in strength to sapphire crystal. i dont know how you managed to break it son!

So sorry to hear about the broken iPhone, but wanted to thank you for posting your story as it reminded me to contact my insurance guy. Just emailed him to find out rates for full coverage insurance in case something like this happens to me...

What?! That is ridiculous. The only reason I even thought maybe having glass on front and back may not be a horrible idea was Apple's bragging of "gorilla glass". I thought well maybe the back will be tough enough to withstand falls.

And who cares if only the front has gorilla if hte back breaks easily and it kills the internals. There's really no point to making one point strong if you are going to leave 50% of it weak. Sure, this guy's wife's display is still intact. Sure helpful when the phone is broken and won't operate correctly anymore.

Makes sense though that the back isn't gorilla glass cause every story I've heard of dropped phones only the back breaks.

There is going to be big business in replacing the glass. Have you tried using Google to see if there is anyone out there offering glass replacement service for IP4

You know, one of the things I admired about my 3G was that it could handle drops. I give Apple kudos for finally making a cellphone that still has a largish screen (as compared to the screen on your regular cellphone) that could take a few drops.

I don't care how careful you say you are. It is a device that you are taking out, holding, putting down a lot. Which means there is a lot more chances something will happen. Especially once you start taking hte device for granted or are in a hurry. I'm not saying a cellphone should be designed to take all falls. But certainly I think a cellphone should take into account how it is going to be used and be designed to take a few small to moderate falls.

It was really a bad design decision to only put the stronger glass on the front but leave easier to break glass on the back. They might as well not have bothered imho. And while it looks cool, they should have just made the back of plastic. It may scratch easy but at least it would *probably* take a fall or two before falling apart.

i believe only the front is made of gorilla glass, not the back

If your source is ifixit, it appears they've backtracked on their claim and now says "The front glass panel of the iPhone is reported to be constructed of Corning Gorilla Glass." They mentioned nothing about the back glass, which could be some unidentified hardened glass.

sounds like your wife is clumsy. don't fault apple for her irresponsibility.

quick question...why all the negativity? Don't mean to single out just your post as this is meant as a broad statement to the board... Why does everyone feel the need to be so harsh to people in distress. Be it people having reception issues, people breaking their phones, people having issues with customer service... I know there's an abundant amount of useless threads out there, but over the last week, i come on here and in 90% of the threads I read, I see posters randomly popping in to put unneeded negativity into the discussion. Why tell someone that they just feel entitiled and have no right to complain... just don't read the thread... why tell someone they're clumsy and irresponsible for accidentally dropping their phone.... accidents happen. The negativity is killing me and though there's really no need for me to post and bash you for said negativity, i felt i needed to vent as this issue has been driving me nuts lately! can't we all just get along???? :D

If I was in your position, I would actually consider this:

http://translate.googleusercontent....&twu=1&usg=ALkJrhi_BP34-1ycz0UkEyDMDXUZY7leLA

If Apple won't replace it, it is better than the price of a new phone (800 yuan = ~$178).

Correction: As you may see lower on the page, the 800 refers to a black replacement cover, if you want a white one it would be 1250 Yuan/RMB. Just to help you guys out here as I read Chinese.

黑:800RMB (Black: 800 RMB)
白:1250RMB (White: 1250 RMB)
