I agree, this kind of attitude is really aggravating and tedious around here. The serious comments are completely offensive, and the "jokes" are not funny and just as insulting. I wish this wasn't so rampant and unchecked by mods. Every time some guy posts that he dropped his phone or spilled Coke in his MacBook Pro, women don't start a chorus of "Oh, guys are so irresponsible" comments. If it were generalizing about probably any other group, it wouldn't be tolerated.

Therefore, a hearty ******* you to the previous sexist posters. May your iPhone shatter under the tires of a Hummer.

I'm not sexist, I have the utmost respect for women.

Have a little sense of humor, I was joking around with what the other guy said. Sorry that I offended you though.:)

It's just a phone! If you have to pay too much attention to how you handle it then it just can not perform its function. If iPhone 4 proves to be as damage-prone as early reports indicate this might be another failure on part of Apple. They screwed up reception trying to come up with flashy design. Now it appears that they might have screwed up phone longevity as well.

I don't care if it is just a phone. It is a $200-$700 investment. PROTECT IT!

wife knocked her phone off the bathroom counter this morning. back is shattered and no incoming voice now. oddly enough the speaker works as you can hear voicemail. but incoming calls you get nothing.

needless to say i'm pissed. got 4 days out of it and now it's ruined.

btw, she dropped her 3g a half dozen times over the years and not even a mark on it.

Sorry to see that phone :(

I did the same thing to my front glass yesterday. Try going to an Apple store, I did today and a Genius replaced it for free!! But once only, after that it is $199 to replace a phone with broken glass. Still a good deal considering the 32GB I own is $700 new.

Good luck!

I do have a sense of humor - it's not just you though, it happens constantly on these forums and it gets old after the 10th post making the same lame joke.

OP: That sucks. I'm disheartened by how easily these seem to break. At least the repair is only $200 and not $700 for a new phone.

This thread is sending shivers up my spine. My wife currently is using an iPhone 4 that when the white version comes out will be put up on ebay. She has a case for it but I'm still paranoid. Wish me luck.

I don't understand how ANYONE can get a phone that costs so much money and not be EXTRA careful...

At very least buy a case! I ordered a Zagg IS and a bumper when I ordered my phone and it was protected before I even synced it up... the very FIRST thing I did.

I have no sympathy for people who drop the phone accidently or not when it is obvious that something made out of glass will break far easier than a plastic phone.

I read plenty of posts about people who broke the 3G/S screens and the back of that was plastic... so really I don't understand it.

I guess some people just don't really care what happens to their phone or possessions!

I am sure your wife is sad and feels terrible but bathroom is slippery and has tiles and hard surfaces - it seems like an accident in that room is asking for a break!

If you buy as ubiquitous thins as mobile phone and have to take extra care because it is so fragile - it means one of two things: device is designed poorly or you can not afford one in a first place.

Time to get a divorce. You keep your phone, she keeps her phone.

I don't know why people are seemingly so careless with relatively fragile $600 items.

It's really too bad you can not have two phones on a single line. Before getting my 3G, I was on Verizon with one of kick ass submersible phones... Which is kind of what I need in lieu of my work that includes mountaineering and lots of skiing.

So when I got my 3G, I had some reservations about it, put a rubber case on it for awhile and got by. But the rubber ended up hanging in my pocket.

So of course, after I remove it, I drop the phone three times in 6 months, lose it in a ski lift line where it gets skied over for half the day and then finally it takes a hit from an errant bottle rocket in a coal mining bar ( magazine assignment ) it literally saved my butt in that case. The iPhone 3G was the bomb, it was tough and some of us just live that kind of life, we are not careless, just constantly in motion.

The new phone is not like that, I am being super careful until I get a case in a few days and still might return it because it is just too damn delicate.

So try not to bag too hard on the guy who had his wife toast the phone, live and let live.

Afterall, not all of us live in a cubicle and spend all day on Mac Rumors

That sucks :( I'm definitely going to need a case when I get mine. I take care of my things, but I've been known to accidentally drop my phone before. I wonder if a regular sleeve/silicone case (the kind that covers the back and sides, but not the screen) would make a big difference though, or if it'd still shatter if I accidentally dropped it.

yikes, i think i'm going to hold off on my purchase for a while. I wonder why they gotta make the back made of glass. Durable plastic or even pleather would've been fine, maybe even tougher.

My wife is admittedly rough on her cell phone. She'll toss it in her purse, on her desk at work, it's just a utilitarian device. She had talked about making the jump to an iPhone.

But after a week of using the iPhone 4 for myself, I'm seriously thinking of getting her an 8 gig 3GS instead. From a feature perspective, it'll still blow away her current phone. But with the wide range of cases and the durability of that unit, I think it's a better fit for how she'll use it. She would likely scratch, chip or break a iPhone 4 unless it was in the strongest case imaginable.

Can you provide a link to any cell phone manufacturer that touts superior durability (i.e. you can drop it) and has a similar feature set to the iPhone? I know "life" happens but I'll gladly take a phone that is expected to be taken care of over a vendor who designs a phone for the clumsiest amongst us.

OP.. there is a guy in my town with a TON of experiance working on iphones.. his site is richsiphonerepair.com .. he can replace the back of the iphone for i believe 40$ check it out

sounds like a deal. brokemyiphone.com quoted me with $99 to replace the backplate.

There is going to be big business in replacing the glass. Have you tried using Google to see if there is anyone out there offering glass replacement service for IP4

Mission Repair is a pretty good shop and they're replacing glass on the iP4

not understanding what their 50 dollar screen only plan for the iphone 4 is. i see that their screen repair is 180, so im left wondering what exactly the 50 dollar price is for.

Apple store replaced it at no charge today. Super cool as they certainly didn't have to do that.
