do people not understand that when they say the glass is strong they mean scratch resistance? of course they dont mean impact shatter resistance

Looks like they should come with cases included!

wife knocked her phone off the bathroom counter this morning. back is shattered and no incoming voice now. oddly enough the speaker works as you can hear voicemail. but incoming calls you get nothing.

needless to say i'm pissed. got 4 days out of it and now it's ruined.

btw, she dropped her 3g a half dozen times over the years and not even a mark on it.

If your wife dropped her 3g that many times, maybe that should have been a good enough hint to get a case for the iphone 4...... just saying.

Seems like more and more of these accidents are happening each day now. I don't want to seem harsh but obviously its your own fault.... but as far as phones go it looks like this new iPhone is one of the most fragile on the market and they say the glass is 30x stronger then plastic???

You may already have insurance if you purchased it using a CC with some kind of purchase protection plan such as Amex, which covers 90 days of accidental damage and theft.

Please, everyone... If you don't have a case yet, get one! It's not worth he risk.

Owch.

Clearly the iPhone is a fragile peice of junk. Typical Apple. They SHOULD HAVE KNOWN that the iPhone would jump off of counter tops, go sky-diving in the restroom, get shot at , and go for walks in the park. And to make it even worse, Apple won't even replace the damaged phone! OUTRAGEOUS!

You know what else isn't very robust? Newborn babies. Seriously the build quality on those things is pretty ridiculous. I shouldn't have to buy a car seat to bring them home.

You sir, are my fu**ing hero!!

As has been said NUMEROUS time: It's GLASS. It WILL shatter given the right amount of pressure.

And it's NOT Gorilla Glass. Actually, let me rephrase: it has NOT been confirmed to be Gorilla Glass. Neither the back NOR the front.

Just take care of your phones, people.

(btw, this isn't having a go at the OP, it sucks that it's happened to your wife, but all of the people going "OMGZ GORILLA GLASS SUXORZ" aren't thinking properly...)

Or maybe they were thinking if Apple couldn't figure out a way to make it be able to handle a few drops, they shouldn't have used glass in the first place.

No, it's not a design flaw. It's bad design. There's a difference. One says it doesn't work like it's supposed to. The other says they should not have designed it that way.

I admit it's a pretty nifty design. But what's that matter when I have to hide it behind a case anyways? I might as well have plastic or wood on the back cause it's not like anyone is seeing hte back anyways since I have a case on it.

Though it is good to hear (to the person who responded to me) that some have managed to handle drops (mine has but it had a case on it and you could tell the case did a good job of softening the fall).

Dropped mine today which scared the **** out of me, but it only scratched a tiny part of the silver band. Nothing else got damaged. It really depends how your phone lands.

I'm a woman, and I certainly don't "love to destroy stuff". I keep my laptop pristine, and I got a case for my iPhone 4 just as soon as I could (same with my 3G), and I'm always careful with my phone. Generalizations based on gender (or race, or anything else) really suck.

That comment didn't bug me as much as the many jokes about her being in the kitchen. I swear, guys, you do realize that women read this board as well? There are plenty of gal geeks out there.

I agree, this kind of attitude is really aggravating and tedious around here. The serious comments are completely offensive, and the "jokes" are not funny and just as insulting. I wish this wasn't so rampant and unchecked by mods. Every time some guy posts that he dropped his phone or spilled Coke in his MacBook Pro, women don't start a chorus of "Oh, guys are so irresponsible" comments. If it were generalizing about probably any other group, it wouldn't be tolerated.

Therefore, a hearty ******* you to the previous sexist posters. May your iPhone shatter under the tires of a Hummer.

My girlfriend lost her 3g, and then dropped her 3gs and the display shattered. Women I tell ya! lol

sounds like your wife is clumsy. don't fault apple for her irresponsibility.

Just so we're clear I didn't blame apple. Just posting what happened. She dropped it, it broke, I'm out $216. And yes she is kinda clumsy, but I haven't found a fix for that. Replacing her would be more than $216.

In this case, it may stem from this: "btw, she dropped her 3g a half dozen times over the years". That right there should have been an indication to the OP that dropping expensive gadgets was commonplace for his wife and he should have picked up a case for both the 3G and the iP4. Regardless of how easily iP4s break (or not), if someone is prone to dropping stuff, it'd be prudent to pick up a case.

I did buy a case and it hasn't shown up yet. I guess i should have had her in the kitchen working until it arrived

You're complaining that the phone broke when it was dropped? LOL.

I'm not complaining. Sharing my experience in hopes others may be more cautious or consider a case. I love how many of you put words in my mouth. I didn't blame apple and don't think it should be indestructible and i never stated anything to that effect.

but i feel ya man, you're probably thinking to yourself: "why oh why, did i not get her a friggen case"

quick question...why all the negativity? Don't mean to single out just your post as this is meant as a broad statement to the board... Why does everyone feel the need to be so harsh to people in distress. Be it people having reception issues, people breaking their phones, people having issues with customer service... I know there's an abundant amount of useless threads out there, but over the last week, i come on here and in 90% of the threads I read, I see posters randomly popping in to put unneeded negativity into the discussion. Why tell someone that they just feel entitiled and have no right to complain... just don't read the thread... why tell someone they're clumsy and irresponsible for accidentally dropping their phone.... accidents happen.

Couldn't agree more. If something bad happens to someone and they vent about it, what's the harm in either not saying a word or just offering up a "Damn, that really sucks," in response? All they're looking for is a little empathy.

And damn, OP, that really does suck. I'd be heartbroken if I'd done that to my new phone. But thanks for posting the story to help reinforce how friggin' careful you have to be with these things.

I know accidents happen, etc and take no offense to this, but why do people treat their $200-$700 phones like they were a $20 plastic toy? I see it all the time. People shove their phones unprotected into their pockets and also put their keys, coins, and things that will scratch and damage them in the same pocket. Would you treat your computer the same way? My sister is like this. It seems like she breaks her phones every 6 months.

If you want to treat your phone like it is a $20 toy, then I suggest buying one those cheap dumbphones or you invest in a protective cases for your expensive smartphones.

As for me, my iPhones are in mint condition. The only thing protecting them is an iPod sock. There may be a hairline scratch here and there that are hardly noticeable, but I take care of my $200-$600 investment. The only time any of my iPhone was dropped was with my 3G when someone grabbed it out of my hands and he didn't have a grip on it and dropped it.

It's just a phone! If you have to pay too much attention to how you handle it then it just can not perform its function. If iPhone 4 proves to be as damage-prone as early reports indicate this might be another failure on part of Apple. They screwed up reception trying to come up with flashy design. Now it appears that they might have screwed up phone longevity as well.

why do we have to give sympathy? why would someone post on a forum looking for such? happens every day. suck it up and buy another one. Better yet make her buy a jitter bug

Think about it this way . . .She obviously feels bad about it and didn't do it on purpose. After all, its just a phone!

The real issue is whether to replace it.
