This kind of engineering flaw on a telephone is complete stupidity, sorry it had to be said.

Got my iPhone 4 yesterday and notice this happening. (mostly because I had less than 5 bars in my apartment.) I tried it again today and brought my signal down to 1 bar and called my work. The call quality was great no cutting in and out or anything. I know Apple said it's a bug in iOS 4. And I think I may have to believe them.

Test it for yourself don't just take the bars going down as a sign you don't have signal. Try browsing the Internet and making a call. :)

Are some of you not reading posts? Call quality as it drops is degrading as is data speeds. Eventually call quality is nil as the phone goes into Searching mode.

And for the guy that said wifi has to be off to recreate the issue, nope. Does the same thing with wifi on or off.

So couldnt this just be a Ios4 issue. People are saying they can do this on their 3gs and 3g too but other say they cant. Probably the ones that cant are still on 3.x

I am on a 3GS running ios4 and cannot duplicate any signal loss reported by other 3GS users.

I don't know how many times this needs to be posted, but here it is again. Use a nonmetallic case or bumpers and you have no problem.

Use a nonmetallic case or bumpers and you have no problem. This unit is made of glass, reasonably tough glass, not unbreakable glass but tough glass. Anyone not using a case or at least bumpers is cruising for a great disappointment. So a case solves two possible problems.

It took me almost 30 seconds last night to figure this out, and I do not consider myself the cleverest person on the earth. All the ranting on threads like this are a waste of time and bandwidth. :D

I can't replicate this issue with my finger at all. I can, however, with a coin.

I guess the issue is there but it won't be a big problem for me

Someone needs an atlas...

:D

Maybe the Southeast part of Denver???

So it's Apple stock that matters the most to you, not best user experience.

Uh, no. Since my iphone4 isn't here yet, I'm not able to have a user experience. If there is a significant problem, it is possible the stock would tank today. And a thread like this causes the mouse cursor to hover over the "sell" button. :p

Can some one try to cover the metal rim all the way around with a pice of tape and see if it still happens.

and can you make it happen if you only touch either top or bottom antenea, with / with out tape

this will tell us

1) has it to do with short circuit
2) has it to do with covering one / both anteneas (with no direckt contackt)
Tried this earlier in the morning just to be silly. Problem persisted.

Notice how during the keynote, Steve NEVER uses the iPhone 4 with his left hand? Even during the FaceTime chat with John Ive..

But if you watch his other iPhone keynotes, he ALWAYS has it in his left hand.

That sneaky son of a beach

I was able to reproduce the dropped bars while holding the bottom corner.

HOWEVER, for me, turning OFF wi-fi fixed the issue and I lost no bars. So it's an issue with wi-fi (both antennas) enabled.

Yes you're right, we shouldn't be annoyed. After spending £599 on a phone it's perfectly reasonable for Apple, and you apparently, to expect us to put some stupid piece of rubbish crap on the phone. Totally acceptable!

WiFi and Bluetooth are disabled on my phone. I'm in a very strong signal area right now. Problem persists.

I turned my wifi off and still have the same issue

Apple should provide free bumpers then. I was not planning on spending $30 on a stupid piece of rubber. If an "accessory" has now become a requirement...apple needs to provide it FREE to EVERYONE

Picked my pre order up in y town OH, I used to have t mobile a couple months ago, I couldn't even talk in my cell in my house, on campus, pp would tell me it would go straight to voice mail, I would drop calls all the time, I could hear them but they couldn't hear me.... So, went bk to AT&T (was with cell one for 12yrs, then they changed to AT&T, n changed my plan, without warning n told me it was no longer avail with AT&T service) so left, t mobile sucked, so in may got 2 3gs's awesome reception n calling, then I read this, got paranoid, only have one of two new4's, n it is phenomenal !!!! All bars all the time , it has to b select few or certain phones, but

Just to erasure, I love it!!!

On phone with apple. This is the first they've heard of it apparently. They're saying people should phone up and complain and get it on radar.

Phone apple, complain!

Couldn't agree more Tom. So there you folks, take Tom's advise and those of you that just drove 60 miles and paid $600 for your new iPhone can just run back to the Apple Store and give them another $30 for a case (elegant looking bumpers)!!! People sure are stupid huh Tom?? They should of known that buying a case was required for making phone calls.

Tell us Tom, do we have to buy any other accessories to make this telephone function as it was designed to do???

Wooooo Hooooo Apple!!!!!!!!!

I've been doing a bit of experimenting with that. And I notice that if I hold it bit higher and don't let my pinky or palm of my hand touch the bottom antennae, it doesn't drop. But as soon as I touch the bottom the signal starts dropping. So until we get this sorted out, and I know Apple will, just hold your phone a bit higher and try not to touch the bottom. Not really that big of a deal. We all just need to adjust the way we hold the phone until we get this fixed with either a firmware update or replacement units.
