A lot of people don't seem to understand... It IS a design flaw, not software. Software cannot change physics, no matter how much pixie dust it's compiled with.

Radio antennae have to be a certain size, or multiple of a size, in order to propagate waves of that certain size. The reason why the phone's antenna is unevenly sized (the UMTS/GPRS antenna is larger) is because of the size of the waves each antenna needs to propagate.

WiFi and Bluetooth operate on the 2.4 GHz band, while cell phone signals use lower frequencies (and thus larger waves).

I would imagine that bridging the two antennae together like this is causing problems because you (in addition to modifying the attenuation) are essentially increasing the size of the cell phone antenna, making it unable to properly transmit and receive at those frequencies.

You can't fix this with software. The only repair options are an unsightly bumper or a recall/redesign.

The ball has been dropped like nobody's business.

I tend to agree.

Dock?

I went to the Woodfield Mall (schaumburg IL)store this morn at 645am and there seemed to be over 1000 people waiting so I left. I don't have the phone yet but was wondering if reception is an issue while the phone is in the dock? Also I called the store about ten minutes ago and talked to an employee. When I specifically asked him about this reception issue he said he was aware and while he had not noticed any issues with the phones in the store he also added that he did not try to mimic the conditions that are being talked about. This sounds fishy as anyone aware of this issue will most certainly try and duplicate it.

I have a screen issue

The 4 corners of my iPhone 4 are brown. Maybe pinched in manufacturing? Not sure. I am receiving a new phone tomorrow... after a $29 replacement fee!
I dont notice the palm thing but do notice a throttling of the cellular signal, going from 4 or 5 bars to one. And in the morning I had lots of seaching for network.

DISABLING 3G HAS RESOLVED THIS ISSUE FOR ME!

Can anyone else confirm? If this works for anyone else, what does this mean?

Your 3G signal is weak, and your covering the antenna starving out the signal. Your 2G signal is stronger.

<sarcasm>
Someone needs to try putting it inside a Faraday cage and see if they have signal issues.
<\sarcasm>

Why does using your LEFT vs right hand matter???? All you nerds contact apple and complain please.....this needs to be addressed and fix made available

Sometimes the signal drops down a couple bars with use of my right hand but LEFT makes it go all the way down. Maybe the phone is for RIGHT HANDED people only lol.

again, When 3g Is Disabled On My Phone, This Problem Does Not Occur. Can Anyone Else Confirm With Your Phones Forced On Edge??
Can't confirm that since I don't have the phone yet, but I can confirm with 100% certainty that a 3G phone which needs to have 3G disabled in order to work properly is a horrible product.

So I am assuming I have no choice but to get a case. As long as a case with bumpers stops the signal dropping. I'll be satisfied. I always have cases on all my iPhones anyway. Especially for such a beautiful device, it just looks fragile. For those using bumper cases, which ones are you mostly using?

Same but different problems

I am also having the same problems with signal dropping to No Service and dropped calls, but it happens even when I hold the device in my right hand. When I hold it, my hand wraps my fingers around the bottom left corner to stabilize the iPhone and this also produces reduced signal/dropped calls. It seems like it may be a short between the two or three separate metal bands around the edge.

if you notice there are three gaps between the metal bands around the edge. If I hold the iPhone between my thumb and forefinger on either side, it seems to work okay. But, if I touch the metal band around the bottom of the iPhone while using it, the signal will immediately start dropping until I get the No Service message.

This occurs whether I am in a call or not. Sorry Apple and AT&T, I can't hold my iPhone like that while making phone calls.

I am in central N.C. USA and reported this to AT&T yesterday immediately after noticing it. Maybe if AT&T also escalates this issue, there may be a quicker fix.

Here's hoping.

Update: I have opened a case with Apple on this issue and refereed them to the many threads on the web regarding this.

Guys it might NOT be an issue of shorting the antennas as if it were the case would somebody please explain to me why if you hold the phone normally, as in your thumb on the left side and your other fingers on the right side, that you don't have the problem even though the left side is one antenna and the right side is the other?

The left antenna goes from the left bottom gap to the right gap, the right antenna is the rest. The right bottom "gap" is just for show.

What you describe as "normal" is uncomfortable as hell to me. My normal has it resting against the palm of my hand.

Yeah, that guy was an idiot and was very irresponsible. Just from seeing pics of him that popped-up after the incident, I can tell you I never would have trusted him with the prototype. And besides, I'm sure they had many many more people testing this device in the wild. They should have been able to pick up on this.

I bet that's why the guy in the bar lost the prototype phone ... he had to put it down to make/finish his call and then forgot to pick it up again! ;-)

Wow...makes me glad I didn't jump on the iphone 4 and beta test antenna designs. I feel bad though, I guess I'll wait for Iphone 5 next year.

I guess I'll be keeping my iPhone 3GS just in case the 4 has to be sent back for a recall. I sense that it may.

What an unfortunate PR nightmare. Now my 2 co-workers who hate the iPhone but know I love it will be in my face laughing.

again, When 3g Is Disabled On My Phone, This Problem Does Not Occur. Can Anyone Else Confirm With Your Phones Forced On Edge??

I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem when I force my phone to the Edge network. Hmm

Edit: Actually that didn't change a thing.

Why don't they just design in an old fashioned walkie-talkie style telescoping antenna and be done with it...

When the signal is a strong five bars to begin with, I can't replicate this problem. When the signal is low to begin with, I can replicate this problem.

BUT, when the signal is low to begin with and I'm holding the iPhone without touching the lower left hand seam, the signal is still a lot stronger than it was with my iPhone 3G.

In short, if you hold the phone without touching the seam, you get a stronger signal in low signal areas. If you touch the seam in low signal areas, you might drop the call or lose your data connection. If you are in a strong signal area, this is all irrelevant. At least, that's the way it is for me.

QFT!

This is the issue at hand. For most of the people that say they have no issues it's because they haven't been in an area where there's less reception. Here IL, in the burbs we have great reception full bars, no issues, I thought my phone was ok. Last night, the wife and I went down town Chicago and we had no service about 80% of the night, battery life went down to 10% in 3 hrs. My other buddy also had the same issue. So that's 3 brand new iphones that were working flawlessly until we hit the city. There's definitely an issue......

Does anyone think that Apple may not have identified this issue due to the 3GS "disguise" case that Gizmodo reported to have found the iPhone 4 prototype in? If all of their testers were forced to use this case, then obviously this issue would not have been identified.

Also, if testers on Apple's campus were closer to a tower when they were using the phone without a case, the signal strength might have been able to overcome this issue as well.

Oh well, i'm not getting a new iPhone until next summer, this year it's my wife's turn (let her work out the bugs, lol).
