My dad dropped his iPhone 4 and the screen shattered, but not nearly as bad. Apple asked if there was any water damage, which there wasn't and they replaced it for free. The employee basically said it's a one time thing especially since my dad had purchased it so recently. He had dropped it about a month after buying it. That's story 1.

I had dropped my 3GS in snow back in Feb and it crapped out. The Apple people opened it up and saw the water damage indicators. I paid my 199 got a refurb and was out the door. Not sure how that policy is now with iPhone 4's. Also might want to look at 3rd party vendors that could fix it. But I think that would run you 150ish. With the damage you have if you get that 199 option might not be so bad.

I'm sure you will, but update once you get results. Would to like to hear how your process/outcome goes.

Man I love Apple, I just got back from the store where they replaced my phone free of charge. :D

Great ending to the story :) They just replaced mine for free (shattered back) two days ago, so I'm right there with you!

That's freaking incredible. Apple, I will admit, has great service if you're nice. I brought in my 2006 MacBook recently (80GB HDD Failing) and they replaced the hard drive at no charge (and doubling the capacity! :D )

Oh ******... It looks . The best solution.. i think... go to Apple and probaly they will give you another phone for 200$.

So what exactly did you say to them and what did they say to you?

They said "How can we help you with your iPhone" and I pulled a plastic baggie out of my pocket with the iPhone in it (broken glass was still flaking off of it) and said "This thing fell 5 stories." He said "Ouch, well I'll take it back and look at it but just to let you know we do have a $199 replacement policy." I said that's fine and he went to the back.

When he came out he said his manager said accident's happen and the phone is fairly new so they can do a one-time only waive of the $199 replacement fee. I said "That's awesome." and he activated the new phone. :D

Check out this video, dropping from 23rd floor and it survive.

fell in the grass, and they didn't show what the actual phone looked like afterwards= So what

OP glad Apple replaced it :), honesty + coming in with the mindset that $200 is actually a good deal for getting you iPhone replaced goes a long way

Too bad Apple doesn't give everyone the same chance with these replacements. Not gonna lie though, if I got a free replacement, I wouldn't care about the others who payed $200 :D

Glad to see it worked out.

From the stories I've heard on here and from experience, Apple seems to have been very lenient on not-covered-by-warranty repairs, especially the glass screens on the iP4. I wouldn't be surprised to see some internal policy on repairing the screens because they're so fragile.

This seems to be the case. Going off my story posted earlier in the thread, and the OP's receipt he had the same thing "one time exception". Small sample size for sure, but two's a trend?

i like how the genius said to reproduce this effect, is normal use.

and a "spider web" effect, heh....I don't think that thing can be repaired

The common thread seems to be honesty, and if you think about it, that's totally logical. I'm sure they get people ALL DAY LONG that come in and say "it just stopped working, I don't know what's wrong". Meanwhile the moisture sensors are so bright they're practically flashing and there's mold growing on the back of the glass. That would piss me off something fierce, and I wouldn't be inclined to help at all.

On the flipside, when the one person in 50 comes in and just says "look, here's what happened, what do I need to do to get my phone replaced?" it's like a breath of fresh air and makes them more likely to want to help. I'm pretty sure that's what happened in my case. They asked me what was wrong, and I said, pointblank, "My wife ran it through the washing machine". They informed me of the $199 charge, which I said was fine--just grateful that it wasn't $699--but wound up waiving it.

The vast majority of stories I've read were the same. Those who were open and honest with the rep more often than not got the fee waived (at least the first time), whereas those who tried to pull one over wind up paying most of the time.

My first iPhone launch day my ex-girlfriend threw it out of the car cracked the front and back glass. When I took it to Apple they told me they would've replaced it for free had only one of the two glasses had been broken so I assume they know the glass is pretty fragile.

So where did you dump her body ?
