Frankly I am suprised the cracked screen percentage went up so little from a 3GS. I have had everyone of the iPhones and the iPhone 4 is the only one that I have a crack on. I had dropped it on concrete in the parking lot from about 2 feet. Thankfully it was only a small crack on the back side of the glass. Still, I could not believe how easily this was damaged and I hope this 'feature' changes on future models.

Same here, the 4 is the only one I've cracked and I've dropped them all. Dangit :(

As if anyone intentionally drops their electronic device.

I don't think he means people drop their phones intentionally, but rather that some people don't try hard enough to make sure they don't damage their phones. For example, don't juggle 4 bags+your iPhone, put it in your pocket. Use a case, so that if you do drop it, it is far less likely to break. There are easy steps people can take to make sure they don't do something stupid, it's not hard. Prevention is the essence of wisdom. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

I carried my original iPhone with me every day until I got a new iP4 a few months ago.

The original -
It never had a case, dropped it twice, once from about 4' to concrete.
It has a little dent in one corner of the metal case.

...

This iP4 seems more fragile to me, but still no case.
I had to upgrade, the iP4 is a BIG jump from the old RevA.

Zack

Same as mine!! Upgraded from the 1st gen. What an upgrade!!

And I'm carrying the iP4 without a case. I love the look, and I can stand the look with a case. It's just plain bad. And I know it's risky to go without a case, so I pay extra attention when I'm pulling it out. It's that simple.

Good luck. Let us know if you feelings change after you break your phone.

My 3GS is just missing a flash for the camera. Other than that, there is nothing *major* the iPhone 4 would offer me.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE iPhone 5 be awesome. My AppleCare runs out on my 3GS at the 2 year mark, and I'm hoping the iPhone 5 turns out great in every way the iPhone 4 failed.

:apple:

I think Ives lost his head a little bit with form over function with 4.

No, Ives thought of something that is absolutely beautiful, and something "outside of the box" that nobody else would even think of. And clearly its so outside of the box given all the noise people have been making about it.

Ives didn't intend on people being so careless with such a gorgeous item. Usually, you'd imagine people would be more careful with something if it's nicer. Seems to be the opposite with iPhone 4, it's almost like people are trying to break the things. They just have no care when handling it.

I'm upset myself, because the glass design is one of my favorite things Ives has ever designed. However, due to the carelessness of other people, I won't be able to enjoy this type of design anymore. People's inability to be careful with their expensive technology is now going to cost me, which upsets me to be honest.

They should have never hired Papermaster. Steve gave him too much atonomy, and realized too late that he no longer had confidence in Papermaster. All complaints reguarding the iPhone 4 should be sent to Mark Papermaster. :apple:

It is glass... What do you expect?

Um... I have dropped tons of cheap plastic phones over the years and guess what... they break too! Usually the back battery cover is what would break. They always ended up cracked, scratched banged up and chipped.

I dropped my IP4 5FT onto concrete and I only got a tiny chip in the side of the back glass. Pretty darn good considering it was not in a case. A week later I got my free Apple case and I can tell you if I had had it on there the phone would not have been damaged at all.

I bet Apple didn't do this testing

Phone is a mobile items that people carry all the time. Designing phones one have in mind that it has to stand certain abused.

So people who thought that it is not apple fault if our iphone 4 easily damage due to drop or scratched due to little abuse is just a people who put their brain on their knee.

Phone even though is only last for 2 years at it max, it still need to be durable enough to be abuse daily. there is no point to own a mobile device but carrying it you always have fear of it get damage.

I am not sure whether apple done this kind of testing to their iphone. I don't think they do.

Apple knows this ! I bet you they are changing the composite of the glass and build quality of the IP4 already now. At least i hope so, cause I'm planning to get 1 in january.

Please Apple, DO SO !
:(

With all of the iPhone 4 issues and everyone complaining, I'm beginning to think I'm the only one who likes using this phone. :(

Yes, the iPhone 4 is prone to damage by its design, but so what? Over a two-year time period, how much does one pay AT&T to carry an iPhone 4? $2500? Seems to me the real question is whether the added Apple aesthetics justify giving $100 to Square Trade if you are worried replacing a broken a phone (I insured mine).

By the way, the sales of the iPhone suggest that Steve Jobs is right, and those who talk about failed designs are economic illiterates who don't understand the concept of costs vs. benefits.

The simple rule, don't drop your iPhone. Period.
Keys to iPhone 4 owner happiness.

1) Don't drop it
2) Don't put the death grip on it.
3) Don't put it in a slide on case.
4) Don't carry it in your pocket
5) Don't use a case that touches the phone.
6) Don't use the phone... period.

You'll never have a single complaint..... :)

Apple's need to look different includes the use of susceptible materials that one would normally steer clear of. Portable devices just need to be impact resistant due to the hectic, mentally side-tracked pace they are often used in. Life is not all about the care and feeding of a phone, or laptop, for that matter. They are tools that should survive normal rigors.

Hmmm I've been debating over the 4 and the 3GS for a while...
I'm still lost for a conclusion. They will have released 5 by the time I decide.

iPhone 5 will most likely be the same design, just with updated internals. They did it with the 3G and 3GS. They do it with iMac and MacBooks and MacBook pros. Gotta pay for the tooling investments.

I bought an iPhone 2g in Sept. 2007, a 3GS in June 2009 and a 4 in June 2010. I dropped each phone occasionally. I was careful, but things happen. The 2g had a few dimples in the metal case, but no problems with functionality. The 3Gs had a few scrapes on the plastic case but it still works great for the person I passed it on to.

I dropped my iPhone 4 once after less than a month of ownership and the screen shattered. The phone still worked, but I was getting shards of glass in my fingertip, so I replaced it.

I honestly believe that the iPhone 4 is much more fragile than the previous models, but I know that my anecdotal evidence is not proof. This hard data from Square Trade seems to back up my belief.

They sell so many iPhones that they can afford a new design every year, if they feel that they need to stay fresh and new to compete with other phones. Look at the iPhone 2g, they completely scratched that design in favor of the 3g after only one year.

i find it mind boggling that people actually would buy a phone with glass exterior. im laughing as i write this so hard. its not really apple's fault that they made a glass exterior. i fault the end user for not realizing that glass = fragile.

Just looks like more clumsy people bought iPhone 4 models.

Nice to hear that component failure due to hardware itself is low, and lower than the industry average.

I am actually amazed at how sturdy the iPhone 4G is. A few weeks ago, while brushing my horse, he grabbed it in his teeth and wouldn't let go. It is in an inexpensive rubbery case and is attached to my belt in a leather pouch. So it is protected ... but not like being in an otterbox case. He grabbed the pouch so hard that there is a scar on the leather. We played tug-of-war for a minute or two before he finally let go. He had it gripped but good and even did a side-to-side with his teeth to further aggravate me. Put your phone in a vise grip and squeeze with all your might and it would not be as tight as he had it. I guarantee the plastic back on my 3G would have cracked.
Interesting story.

Reminds me of one time my uncle and I were working on a fence and happened to be bent over working on a post hole and one of our horses came up and pick pocketed my uncle's checkbook which was in his rear pocket. The horse ran around the pasture having a blast with that checkbook in his mouth and wouldn't give it back to my uncle. We ended up ignoring the horse and after a while he brought it back and dropped it by where we were working.

In your case, you are lucky your iPhone didn't break or scratch. I agree with you on the iPhone 3G/3Gs. Don't think it would have survived.

And the iPhone 4 has the glass they use in helicopters windshields?
I think it depends on the helicopter ... as all helicopter windshields are not the same. :)
