No.

Then you're a clueless EVO user. How many Mifi apps can you download on your non-jailbreak iPhone? How many tethering apps? It's stuff like that which Apple does its damndest to block from its users. Real quality apps that serve a real purpose. Available on Android, not on the Apple store.

Those aren't productivity apps, those are network connectivity apps.
Different category.

WHOA. You sound insane. How can you think it's unfair to compare a cell phone's camera to a device who's sole function is to be a camera?!?!?

+1 to you sir

Now YOUR post sounds insane. It's completely unfair to compare a phone's camera to a stand alone camera.

Yes, to a point. A crappy camera still won't pick up the fine detail that even most point and click can now.
And explain to me how selective focus and exposure works on an Evo, since that what we were talking about in the first place.

I have not said anything about any iPhone knockoff.

Writing an article this weekend to demonstrate how different factors can mess up your photo.

Then explain these. These are Evo pictures:

http://paulstamatiou.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/IMAG0209.jpg

The first one:
The bright colors are washed out, the greens lack definition, and there is a sh load of noise in the picture.

The second one:
I don't know where to start. So much noise my ears are hurting, the whole picture lacks definition, and there is a major lack of detail on anything.

Don't feed the troll ;)

You are absolutely right, but you aren't going anywhere: he just doesnt listen.

I don't think you know the meaning of "washed out" if you can call these two images washed out. They certainly aren't "washed out"! In fact saturation and noise levels on these two samples are damn impressive for a phone camera.

+1

I too consider them to look pretty natural and they don't appear to be overly processed, compared to the HTC Evo ones which seem to saturate a tad much and seem to have too much noise reduction.

I'm with the iPhone 4 so far, but it will be interesting to see a proper comparison with photos taken by both, side-by-side, and in the same conditions.

The last camera phone I tried was the Sony Ericsson Satio, and while there were more camera functions, the rest of the phone weren't much of a joy to use at all.. so it wasn't much of anything despite the camera.

YouTube for those who can't download:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDXIll1Rt34

Youtube data rate is around 2Mbs whereas it appears the iPhone 4 is using 10.8 Mbs. So the original will have a lot more detail in it, especially since the camera is moving throughout the shot and compression is not as good in moving shots. Considering broadcast's 720p at 60 fps is around 19Mb/s the iPhone 4 at 30 fps is equivalent for less action orientated shots.

They look pretty good, roughly on par with other examples I've seen from other newer phones.

Come on guys, all these phones have similar camera tech inside, it's not like any one is going to be head and shoulders better than the rest. Similar-sized sensors, well-engineered but severely compromised lenses (given the size constraints), budget constraints, etc. Each one is going to have its own tweaks, different levels of noise reduction and sharpening, etc. so they will look different in different conditions. But the underlying hardware is very similar.

I think the new iPhone compares more favorably against current competition than the original iPhone did (against its then-current competition.)

I just think it's great that you can get good-looking 5 x 7's out of these things now. A few years back that was the standard of measure for dedicated, $400-$500 digital cameras...

LOL Skyehill things tethering and mifi apps are productivity apps.

How come I can't get my bank account, my stock trading account or any of my credit card accounts via apps on Android but I can do all of that on the iPhone.

What on earth do you do that you think tethering and mifi are productivity apps?

There's one thing that always confuses me when I see "EVO is much better than iPhone" or "I hate Mac" - If you don't like the iPhone 4 then why the hell are you reading a thread titled "iPhone 4" and then posting pathetic and childish remarks about the EVO being better? Don't like the iPhone 4, fine. Just don't start idiotic 'phone wars' in a forum. Am I the only one that's noticed this?

Now YOUR post sounds insane. It's completely unfair to compare a phone's camera to a stand alone camera.

I am going to assume you knew I was being sarcastic. In which case I say to you- EVERYONE knows that the iPhone 4 camera should be on par with today's HD cameras. DUH!

I notice that the audio in this clip is mono. As the iphone 4 has 2 mics for noise cancellation, I wonder if it is even possible for it to record in stereo...

Fake?

Is there any proof the video and pictures actually came from an iPhone4? I admit the picture on the newspaper looks like an iPhone4 sitting on a recent paper, but Photoshop does wonders in the right hands. It's the display that looks wrong.

Are Apple engineers losing phones in CZ bars now? This picture looks odd. I see 5 bars but no network provider, no Edge or 3G logo. What is the 'O' next to the battery percentage remaining? Would be an odd location for a service providers logo to appear on iPhones. It's also an odd location for the GPRS indicator. Usually it shows up where the E or 3G logo normally appear.

The map graphic and fonts look pixelated with jaggies. Looks like a 3GS display, nothing like the smooth lines that Scobleizer posted after WWDC. I don't know maybe its the photo itself thats making it look so rough.

No they don't. Stop being a fanboy. The EVO in perfect light takes amazingly good pictures. The EVO sucks in low light. We still don't know how the iPhone 4 fares in low light, but considering Apple hasnt bothered to take any and show them off, it can be assumed that it too sucks.

My wife OWNS the EVO 4G, so yes, I can say that the picture and video quality seems better on the iPhone 4 than the EVO. No fanboy drama.

iPhone 4 Video quality

The iPhone 4's video capture quality potential is pretty exciting:

720P 30fps @ 10.87 Mb/s h.264

to head off the EVO Fandroids, here are the EVO HD video specs

720P 25fps @ 6Mb/s 3GP container

The iPhone 4 is capturing 25% more pixels per second and using a much better quality data rate. I still am researching the color space differences, but overall it appears Apple has taken phone video to another level.

This is especially valuable when you are editing these clips. I went ahead and imported the original mov file into iMove 09 and did two simple adjustments: 1, stabilization and 2, auto color correction. The end result looks excellent. The color correction brings out more details in the swaying grass and overall the color look better saturated and balanced. The more picture information you have the more you can do in post.

Apple apps have the best selection of time-wasting games. Android has far and away the best selection of non-gaming apps, and most of the great ones are free. Android apps can also all be purchased and then "returned" within 24 hours if you don't like them. Would love that option on the Apple app store, especially considering how incredibly bad the rating system has become.

Um, you CAN return any app you buy from the app store for a full refund.

Also, there are exclusive apps on the iPhone no available on the android.

They're called "fandroids". And I'm just someone looking for a worthy phone. They dislike my opinions of the EVO on that official forum because I pointed out its faults (poor video and camera in bad lighting, questionable build quality, idiotic 10 dollar EVO upcharge each month, and HTC has never shown any signs of wanting to update the OS in a timely fashion). And my opinions of the iPhone aren't all that welcome here (horrible OS, insane amount of dropped calls, Apple controls all choices unless you jailbreak, perhaps the worst carrier in the US). My wife is getting an iPhone 4 (my persistence in getting her a home delivery for the 24th paid off), but for me I'm most likely going to simply get a Go phone and an iPod Touch if the Touch comes out with the same screen, battery life, and processor.

I cannot for any reason understand why you think the OS is terrible... I have found it to be the most intuitive OS on a phone I have seen. Does it have some shortcomings? You bet - but those are the same OS issue that the iPod Touch would have.

How is time-out working out for you?

D

When I enlarge the images, instead of seeing typical pixelation, there seems to be a blurring effect going on. The photos almost seem like paintings. (Kinda like the watercolor filter in image editing programs). Anyone else notice this? ... or maybe I'm just crazy :p

It's a denoise algorithm used in the JPEG compression. Both the EVO and iPhone do it, but the iPhone seems to handle it much better.

Use dropbox :), When ur memory is full, upload to dropbox and delete from ur phone, U don't need a computer to transfer :)

I already use Dropbox, but there's a limit of 2 GB for a free account. I don't really want to pay for a subscription, I'd rather have more storage on the phone itself. It also seems kind of backwards having to rely on uploading because of capacity constraints on the phone. HSUPA will be useful for that though.

I wonder if Apple will release a firmware update for the camera fixing some of the washed out look effects? Fine-tuning the preset settings for the camera.
